Looks like Liam Lawson is getting the red bull treatment early too...

Ferrari with both cars disqualified today, are only 1 point behind Red Bull. That's not a good look.

Having followed the saga last year, I think Lawson and his team were making a lot of noise about not being in the 2nd RB. I know DTS is heavily edited but I get a real sense he thinks he is far better than other RB stable drivers and his results this year do not suggest that.

The whole thing is a mess entirely of RBs own making. They've been treating young drivers quite poorly over the years and they have set this precedent and narrative themselves. They brought Daniel back in last year and then dumped him.

They need to get their sh?t together.

The driver and team standings have only been updated now as I typed this. Hamilton has 9 and LeClerc 8. Ferrari on 17.

Tsunoda has had a good start to the season, he could be around 6th in the standings if wasn't for bad strategy calls and his front wing sh!tting the bed today. Lawson has had a pole and podium at suzuka in 2023 super formula so he should be putting in a good performance there but if he doesn't then Tsunoda and Lawson should be swapped around. RedBull don't have anything lose at this stage, Yuki is out of contract at the end of the year and they aren't going to win either championship anyway

Doesn’t make sense to be doing anything in the media bar backing Lawson for now.

What should they have done differently? The fundamental problem is that no driver on the grid can hold a candle to Max, and on top of that the Red Bull is a really poor car in general right now. If you look at Max's on boards he has to fight it constantly. I know people talk about how it's set up to his preferences which is partially true, but ultimately it's just very poorly balanced for any driver right now including Max, but he's able to drive round it.

Everyone was screaming they should dump Checo and put a young driver in. They've done that, and now everyone is screaming that they shouldn't have done that. I would wager if Yuki was in the Red Bull and Lawson in the RB the last two races we'd be having the same conversation about how Yuki is doing so poorly and Lawson is performing so well in the RB that they should have promoted him.

They gave Ricciardo a try out but he didn't cut the mustard. What more can they do exactly? What would you do in their shoes to fix the problem? Other than, you know, fix the car, which is far easier said than done.

Ferrari are 19 points behind Red Bull right now, not 1 point. I guess it was 1 point before the DQ. I'd say the fact that Red Bull are ahead of Ferrari at all is far from being "not a good look" considering how much faster the Ferrari is.

good win for Oscar but very uneventful race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,380 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

    Ye agreed.

I think they've manufactured a situation over the last 12 months whereby the right and only thing for them to do is to stick by their decision and back him.

First time in history both Ferraris have been disqualified from the same race.

And Sainz becomes only the second driver in F1 history to score points for McLaren, Ferrari and Williams. Prost the only other driver to do so.

This has to sum up Ferrari in one weekend, hero to literal zero in a few days. Excessive plank wear was the reason they raised the car in Melbourne, so this could be a fundamental issue with the car. Usually, heads begin to roll now, but surely they won’t…

Positives: Bearmans bottle for a young lad. Piastri staking claim to the No.1 drive for McLaren. The potential in the RacingBulls. The HAAS performance, but that hasn't lasted long previously. Albon, seems pretty consistent when the car is there.

Negatives: Lawson will never get that car under him. The RedBull package seems a handful, Max will lose patience with it pretty quickly. Doohan is a bit of a menace.

If McLaren maintain this kind of dominance, we could end with a Hamilton v Rosberg type of battle for the title. Max's talent can only take Red Bull so far.

    This too shall pass.

At what stage will Red Bull look at themselves and wonder why that second car can't perform anywhere near as well as Verstappen's?

They just churn through and spit out drivers now when there is a clear pattern that formed ages ago.

When did Ricciardo get given the second seat again? He wasn't given a chance in it tbf. It seems if the second seat is to be of any use to the team they need to plop another veteran a la Checo into it. An older driver may be able to wrestle it around somewhat effectively. Aside from Max himself no RB Academy graduate has gotten a handle on it since Ricciardo moved to Renault.

Sainz woulda been a decent shout if RB had acted quickly enough.

I think we need to ban the "RB" shorthand because at this point it's impossible to know which team the poster is talking about.

    This too shall pass.

I reckon Red Bull will "write off" constructors for this season and focus on next year's car. But Verstappen is so good, so even with a car that's lacking (at least currently) I expect him to be in the drivers fight, with the McLarens and possibly Russell. Not sure what to make of the Ferraris, they seem to sabotage themselves rather often...

Max should benefit from not having a team mate that will take any points away from him. Unlike at McLaren and Ferrari where wins and podiums will be shared between both drivers. Will that help him to win another Driver's championship who knows, but if he can keep picking up podiums it'll keep him in the hunt.

So rumours abound that Red Bull are having a meeting in MK this week to discuss swapping Lawson and Tsunoda for Japan

Toto has been making contact again with Max's camp. I'd say that's bad news for Russell

One other thing I came across was Williams were using Microsoft Excel to track 20000 car parts until recently which is why the car was often starting the season way over the weight limit whereas now they have moved on from that they are not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,362 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Oh that excel thing was big news last year. By all accounts Williams was a shambles of a team before Jimmy V took over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭TheRona

Where do the rumours regarding Tsunoda come from? It would be an interesting thing to even be considering, especially when Tsunoda hardly outshone Lawson when they were on the same team (not that Lawson set the world alight either).

I was looking at last years Chinese GP quali, and Checo was 0.7s behind Max in Q1 and scraped through in 15th before eventually getting 2nd on the grid. This year, Lawson was 0.7s behind Max in Q1, and that was enough to be dead last and out. The margin for error is smaller than ever, and the Red Bull is going backwards.

Doohan has already got 4 points on his licence. Has to be a record.

Williams are not using Excel anymore, their title partner is Atlassian now so I would imagine they are using that.

Lawson is in the Red Bull though or at least was for two races lol but will not be in Japan.
