It's quite remarkable that you took a comment about far right figures becoming interested in Garron (they are), and turned it into that spiel about stuff nobody has even said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,610 ✭✭✭nachouser

I think it's fair to say he has been incredibly naive and whoever pushed him to make the post has done him a huge disservice. With a bit of luck he'll be back to rating ice-cream or whatever it is he did beforehand in no time.

And here I was thinking that I just "wasn't very good at this discussion thing." 😊

I don't owe anyone an apology - bringing random commentators from other countries into a post made by an Irish comedian who only ever talks about Irish stuff is dishonest. I'm not going to apologise for bringing the discussion back to Ireland.

Noone s entitled to give his opinions about Ireland and to have those examined regardless of what anyone in a different country might think or say about that.

It's bizarre to think he has any responsibility for that.

Absolutely. Hopefully he never mentions it again and just resets to normal

You brought Ireland into it. Garron has a massive following, a worldwide following. He doesn't just talk about Irish stuff, have you ever watched his videos at all? Seems like you don't really know his accounts.

The internet is not just Ireland 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭Curse These Metal Hands

It's not dishonest, Katie Hopkins and the other Tate have tweeted about him. Look it up if you don't believe me.

    I'd say Garron is disgusted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,637 ✭✭✭volchitsa

I didn't say they didn't. I said that's not his responsibility because he was talking about Ireland not about England or even the US, except indirectly. And he certainly should not have to second guess what foreigners might say about his opinions before he gives them.

He doesn’t need the internet to do the influencing. He can have a segment in the Farmers Journal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,637 ✭✭✭volchitsa

So he's not allowed to have opinions that you don't agree with?

Or just not allowed to have opinions that somebody in a different country that you don't like might like?

    Seems a bit authoritarian.

And yes I have seen his videos. They're slightly amusing. He seems like a nice lad.

Am I wrong here in this run down?

Noone was asked by multiple people (his words) what he thought about McGregor in the White House.

Noone then turned that request into giving his views on immigrants/immigration. Which was that discussion should be allowed and then went on to say that cities and towns aren't safe (which is false, and is a well known anti-immigrant/racist dog whistle)

    Some people opposed his views

    Some people supported his views

    The opposition outnumbered the support

Then Noone chickened out and deleted his social media. It's important to note that he didn't have to do this. He wasn't made to do this. The social media companies didn't do this. The Irish Government didn't do this. Garron Noone did.

He could have locked it down for a few days while he thought about what was happening, and reflected on it.

He could have taken a holiday, and left his phone and laptop at home.

There were many, many things he could have done than choose the nuclear option of deletion.

I have not seen anyone say he shouldn't have that viewpoint, or more egregiously, shouldn't be allowed have that viewpoint.

No, he made his opinion on a contentious subject known to the public. It appears the majority do not support that view. It's always important to note a loud minority has alo supported him.

Or even smarter just not deviated from his usual routine.

Plenty of more established celebrities have ruined themselves by trying to get edgy and lurch into political material and then immediately realise they are utterly out of their depth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,372 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

But sure none of it is his responsibility, noone has said it is.

Once he made the video, he has no control over who uses it, for what reasons

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,372 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

    I

I never said anything at all about his opinions. He is entitled as anyone else to whatever opinions he wishes to hold.

Well done making up stuff that wasn't said

Pretty much except apparently there were death threats made to him - but this hasn't come from Noone himself. And there doesn't seem to be any evidence of them at all, and people just ignore you when ask for it.

But still somehow free speech has been impacted.

Unfortunately, it may be a while before he can return to normal, so to speak, when you now have TD's like Peadar Toibin virtue signalling about it and people on FB starting to change their profile pictures to IstandwithGarron. Jesus Wept!!!!!!

My point about 'celebrities' is that they are frequently seen as role models and influential and it matters much more if they come out with contentious comments, hence them getting pushback. Nobody cares a jot what the likes of Ian O'Doherty, David Quinn, Niall Boylan etc have to say about anything, as they are cranky oul fellas who are most certainly not role models to anyone.

Imagine though if Evan Ferguson, Sharlene Mawdsley or Saoirse Ronan made the exact same comments as Noone did about immigration - there clearly would be a big controversy and backlash, precisely because of the role model thing,

As for left wing talking points supposedly not being problematic, I've seen President Higgins taking a huge amount of flak in the last year or two for some of his public pronouncements, sometimes even from the mainstream media.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,637 ✭✭✭volchitsa

Seriously?? If the President whose actual constitutional role is to be neutral is the best example you can find of a left wing person getting flak for their opinions, when there's concern that he may actually have flouted the constitution with his behaviour, I think you have no argument at all!!

In fact this level of delusion - and the fact that others have liked your post - shows the depth of the problem in Ireland. Far left opinions - grand, anything goes even the president contradicting his government's foreign policy. Anything to the right of Higgins though is literally Gengis Khan and must not be heard for fear that randomers in different countries will pick up on it.

Ah come on now, you can't seriously think that left wing politicians or personalities don't get abuse from the right.

Prefeace this by saying other than he's a bloke on Tik Tok I haven't a clue why everyone is losing their minds over what he said - he's not Michael D or the Pope.

1.) He's a bloke who does comedy and sings - why people were pestering him for his opinion in the first place?

2.) Bit of self-awareness was required not to get into it or believe the sycophants who were hanging on his thoughts

3.) He went for the bait and offered some opinions which are partially informed by hysteria on-line. No where is over-run, some uneven distribution which is not fair to anyone and there are definitely pis* takers but it's the minority and that should be dealt with as part of good Government.

4.) Seems like a good bloke, no one really thinks he's on the right let alone far right. Also seems like a sensitive fella so this must be horrible for him.

5.) He clarified his comments; he seemed completely genuine.

6.) Move on everyone including Garon.

Don't let the far-right use all of us for their utter bull sh*t, they love nothing more than driving a wedge. The 'too woke' or cancelling arguments are playing right in to their hands.

@Flaneur OBrien As mentioned before in the immigration thread 'Noone' was asked about 'Mcgregor' in the Whitehouse. 'McGregor' made comments about immigration and 'Noone' was explaining that to discuss it, he would also have to spend time talking about the topics raised by 'McGregor'. Basically the whole concept and reason of his video. See transcript of video in extra.ie link earlier in thread!

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/mar/17/conor-mcgregor-anti-immigration-rant-white-house-condemned-by-irish-pm

@Curse These Metal Hands Because 'Noone' deactivated his Tiktok/instagram accounts, it is hard to see or point to possible evidence of 'Death Threats' possibly posted or not. They also maybe have been censored out by the platforms.

The Constitution does not impose a rule of Neutrality on him. Those with a concern that he actually flouted the Constitution should have acted to have him impeached.

Could AGS be investigating the threats, and advised Garron to shut down, stay quiet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,372 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

No. He shut down within 24 hours or so. He made the decision himself.

His mother has already posted that he is taking a break and will be back

That poster has a tendency to post vague, obtuse comments.

    I'm mint.

How exactly are are a few negative comments on a video "hounding genuine people of social media"? The guy is 30 years old ffs all he has to do is not spend time looking for negative comments

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,002 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Its just attention seeking to try and stop the hole he stupidly dug getting any bigger.

My two cents. I don't think Garron Noone said anything that could be construed as 'right wing'. I thought what he said was balanced and thoughtful.

I'll pick you up on this point here:

    The opposition outnumbered the support

The far-left operate lists and message groups, within minutes of Garron posting the video there was a swarm of co-ordinated pile-ons. Members of these groups contain activists, Trade Unionists, NGO advocates, journalists and those who are easily swayed by far-left dogwhistles.

It's easy to say the opposition outnumbered the support when the guy was swarmed and targeted by an organised mob crew designed to shout down and intimidate anything that goes against their agenda.

Garron was the perfect target with a huge following - he has publicly stated he has some mental health issues, he is young, he comes across as a big lovable softie at the back of it all. However the far-left saw all this as an easy target.

All this, despite their #BeKind mantra. Absolute hypocrites of the highest order. The far left are long overdue a public opinion hammering - glad to see them get it over this.
