I am hoping to have a PV system installed shortly. We've had a few providers quote at this stage. Roof space will allow for approx 10 (4.5kwh) panels split east/west. 5kwh Battery is also included in the quote. What I am struggling to understand is what the 'strings' element of the quote means. What's the difference between the panels all being on one string Vs two strings?

Also because of the orientation of the house/roof we'll likely get more direct sun onto the west facing roof should we be looking at optimisers at all or is this handled by the inverter?

Each string is a set of panels, eg 5 on your west roof, 5 on the east. Because they are separate strings on separate inputs of the inverter, no optimisers are needed

East will catch sun in the morning, west in the evening

    Got this fitted today

    https://www.dungannonelectrical.co.uk/product-detail?prodref=DS201+C32+A100&category=2-pole-abb-100ma-rcbo

Had ordered the other one from Lithuania but it got lost, courier delivered me something else and eventually they agreed to refund.

Interesting to see if my tripping is over.

Gave up on my installer just bought it myself and had electrician fit it

I have no doubt that this will sort your issues.

I'm in the early stages of looking at panels possibly later this year.

what I'm wondering is does these aspects work ,not many in the area have panels and the few that do are all different orientations

front faces SE139* ish and back nw319* is it worth my while with these aspects ?

Have a read of the below thread, it gives a good idea of what to expect from the North facing, the South will be ok.

thanks will have a read through that and need to get my head around a few bits ,yeah had a feeling the northwest might be off the table but just wasn't sure as it can get good sun during the good months but have never really tracked it.

now i may have made a balls of ticking this off but ,say i can get 6kw of panels up on the SE facing aspect ,the below looks ok ?now to fully read through that other tread !

Have a look at this app as well, it shows when the sun will hit all the panels throughout the year. https://g.co/kgs/eCmPUcT

This is the best of a couple of quotes I've got recently:

    9x440w TW Panels

This is a 3.96 kwp system and will produce 3,649 kwh annually.

    •    9x 440w TW panels

    •    SAJ hybrid inverter

    •    5KWH battery

    •    3x optimiser

    •    Roof mounting equipment
    •    Shunt
    •    All labour works
    •    All electrical testing and commissioning
    •    Online monitoring to see each day exactly what your system is producing
    •   BER

€6054 after grants. Apparently with the shape of our roof, that's the most number of panels possible. Seems like a decent quote. Am I missing anything?

Total newbie question here. I have a smart meter but not on a smart plan. When I log into ESB networks the downloads section shows now hdf files. Anyone know why this would happen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,988 ✭✭✭10-10-20

When was the smart meter installed? If it's new then it can take up to either 40 days for data to appear from what I recall from previous posters.

    Thats normal.

You can access your smart meter use at any time on the ESB networks page.

But this information is not shared with your electricity supplier unless you are on a smart plan

If i purchase one of those batteries, can i just charge it overnight during chap electricity and then use it all day to get the use of the cheaper rate at the peaker periods. I know this isnt strictly solar but it can be :)

My semi d roof (you can see the boundary wall bottom right) has three windows from a converted attic. How many panels do you think I can get on. I once sent a picture to an installer and they said six max however a neighbour who seems to have windows in the same spots has 9.

A row of 5 horizontally at the top.

Two vertical in the middle, starting below the top row.

One below the left window horizontally and one above the right window horizontally.

His does seem to do very close to the top, is that an issue?

There may even be room to the left of the window? I know there are rules about going close to the edge. Is that a safety issue?

Interested on peoples opinions. I am close to south facing so I presume the north side isn't worth it? I have Air to Water and use about 5,400kWh per year ranging between 300kWh in summer and 650kWh in winter. I don't have an electric car yet.

My thinking is that unless I can get to eight panels it's not worth it.

I also have a plat roof extension. Could I stick a few there?

You'll have to trust the installer there, it's too hard to say from this distance really. The SEAI rules apply to spacing from the various elements, if you want more then just install what's recommended initially and then have the installer upgrade them after the grant has been obtained.

yes, plenty of people doing this already (me included)

Thanks for reply, can you recommend where id get started ordering, who youd recommend etc. Can PM if needed

I guess I don’t fully trust the installer eye balling a picture when others seem to have fitted more in. Big difference between 6 and 9.

Can I get my roof surveyed so I know exactly what will fit and then can get quotes for the same number?

    Who would do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,988 ✭✭✭10-10-20

An installer should do that, it's in their interest to fit as many panels as possible. Get three quotes. Find an installer who you trust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭Grey123

For each quote should they come and do a survey? I presume they would need to get up on the roof to take some measurements.

    Will call around tomorrow.

My battery came with the solar panels. I don't know where you'd go to just put a battery in without the panels, if that's your plan. I think a lot of people on this forum have gone down the DIY route for batteries.

So we got a solar system installed this week by KB Electrical this week and I'm loving it so far. Even with clouds today generating way more energy than we use.

My question - does payment for my export to grid (Electric Ireland currently) calculate retrospectively once the installer paperwork has been processed by ESB Networks? Or does it only start to calculate from registration onwards? Probably small difference i know, but I'm curious! We had a smart meter installed last year and I did register for grant in advance of install.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,089 ✭✭✭DopeTech

no, you only make money on the exports from the time the NC6 form has been processed by ESB networks. New to this also so found that out during the week.

hi - got solar installed during the week. 4.4kw system, didn’t get a hybrid inverter and have the solar man app. I see in the App Store that you can monitor consumption. I would have assumed any energy generated goes first to the home for consumption and leftover goes to the grid? The app shows its going all to the grid but new to this

According to ESB networks I have a 16kVA connection, but the max I can download at seems to be around 11kW. Is this all I can expect or is something not right here? If I should be able to download at higher than 11kW, what can I do to increase the speed? Thanks

    Download? You mean import.

3kW into the battery plus 7.8kW into the house = 10.8kW. If you want to import more then you need to consume more by either increasing the electrical use in the house or by increasing what's going into the battery. What is the kW rating of the inverter in terms of it's peak export to the house and what is the max battery charge rating?
