One can't help feeling that a lot of these stories are making the news "because Trump".

People were being refused entry to the US long before he arrived.

Again this isn't about refused entry.

It's about weeks or more of detention without legal representation.

She didn't have the visa yet, she wasn't travelling on it. As per the article you link.

I wouldn't go to New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles as they have been kipified over the last few years, it will take 2 or 3 years for them to be cleaned up and tens of thousands of criminals/unwell locked up. The rest of the country I'd be grand visiting.

Like immigrants have ruined them or what?

People say the same about London and Paris but they were great to visit last times I was there not long ago.

    Not a chance.

Spent a lot of time on and off throughout the early 2000s (Probably about a month each year for over 10 years and about 5 months initially in 1998-1999). And was there on holidays with some friends in mid 2000s.

My family and I planned to go in 2019 to Washington (Big West Wing fans). I'd been before and liked it. Wanted, amongst other things, to to to the Smithsonian on 50th anniversary of Apollo 11.

But trump got in. Didn't want to walk into a building with his picture on the wall. Their descent into hate, fear, ignorance and isolation only continued under biden and now trump is in again and his entire organisation is spouting nothing but lies and hate.

I can't see myself ever visiting there out of choice. May have to with work but even then, I would attempt to limit as much as possible.

I would consider myself liberal. Others would consider me "woke" because they can't define it. That's OK. I would not want to enter a country that does not respect my own personal opinions or even want me there. They won't miss me and I won't miss visiting the US.

It's more the drug addiction and relaxed attitude to retail crime that's the problem. Fentanyl addiction ruining those cities, people just absolutely out of it and not a pleasant experience being around on the streets not knowing what they are capable of.

Which people, those who are refused entry, or the illegal immigrants?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,035 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Some of the ones refused entry at the border have been carted off to detention centres. Not illegal immigrants and actually people who had done nothing illegal.

In all fairness I've never had much interest in going to the US, even less so now.

My answer is: nope, I would not!

It was always strict getting in to US and if you messed around overstaying or venturing in to Mexico or Canada without properly declaring exit and re-entry you were in trouble. I remember in my 20's going over with friends for a short holiday and we were grilled about our reasons for going, how much funds we had, who our employers were in Ireland, proof of our hotel and return flights etc, to be fair we would be prime criteria to be going there to overstay and work so should have been checked.

I'm sorry, but we only read headlines 'round here

I find that hard to believe. Just to make sure, refused entry means that the person had the right visa (or visa waiver) but the immigration officer decided to not allow them in - in that case why detain the person when all they need to do is send them back (not deport, as they weren't inside to begin with).

On the other hand, if we're talking about people who pull that trick with missing passport, then they should be detained until their identities are verified and they can be legally sent back

    Believe it all you want.

The stories are out there. Some are linked on this thread.

The Canadian woman was stopped at the border. She offered to pay her own way home immediately. She had a valid visa.

A sizable amount of Americans didn't vote for him. In the same way that not everyone in Ireland supported the IRA and their many bastard offspring blowing up pregnant women, old age pensioners, people who like to go to nightclubs etc.

Never been to new york and was planning to go but wouldn't be arsed now for the time being.

Actually she had a canceled TN visa and her belief that she would be successful in applying to a new one, but don't let the facts inconvenience you. And yes it looks like she was made an example of, but she was technically trying to enter US illegally.

She didn't have a valid visa per the article

"He claimed I also couldn’t work for a company in the US that made use of hemp – one of the beverage ingredients. He revoked my visa, and told me I could still work for the company from Canada, but if I wanted to return to the US, I would need to reapply.

I was devastated; I had just started building a life in California. I stayed in Canada for the next few months, and was eventually offered a similar position with a different health and wellness brand.

I restarted the visa process and returned to the same immigration office at the San Diego border, since they had processed my visa before and I was familiar with it. Hours passed, with many confused opinions about my case. The officer I spoke to was kind but told me that, due to my previous issues, I needed to apply for my visa through the consulate. I told her I hadn’t been aware I needed to apply that way, but had no problem doing it."

He visa was revoked, she returned to Canada for months and then attempted to travel again, hoping she'd get her Visa approved in San Diego where it had been approved in the past.

She shouldn't have spent weeks locked up, she should have been allowed to return, but she did travel without a valid visa, and she knew she didn't have one, and she would have known there was at least a good chance she wouldn't get one.

Your right I got a bit confused there. By going back "to get it sorted" I thought that was to finalise an accepted visa.

You could always head over and ask them to take their stupid, self loathing word back?

Could then free yourself from it and you might stop trying to shoehorn it into every post.

In the spirit of renaming things, I propose we now call it Western Russia.

    This is an idiotic thread.

Most people in the US couldnt give a fiddlers about Trump, Russia, Israel, Ukraine, Elon et al. 90 million eligable voters didnt even bother their arse voting last year. Another 100 million cant vote.

You could drive around the country for weeks and not encounter any of it. Just normal people living their lives.

Dont confuse social media noise with real life.

If boards are paying for it , it would be negligent to send you on your own . 😄

That's not how I read it?

"One minute, I was in an immigration office talking to an officer about my work visa, which had been approved months before and allowed me, a Canadian, to work in the US."

"I was granted my trade Nafta work visa, which allows Canadian and Mexican citizens to work in the US in specific professional occupations, on my second attempt."

The issue seems to be that a particular ICE officer took issue with the granted visa, and when she went back to the immigration office at the San Diego office where it was approved, she was detained there.

Edit: On a re-read I see she had returned to Canada in the meantime. Still, it seems absolutely bonkers to me that a random border agent can unilaterally revoke a properly-obtained work visa on the basis of not liking what the company you're working for does.
