Somedays I say trump is too off putting to go to the u.s and other days I say so what. I think if/when they do the 25% tariff that will be enough for a lot of people not to go, like the Canadian’s. It’s too dear over. Theirs more places I want to go there but it’s hard to justify the cost. I’ve never had a problem with immigration officers, they’re a mix bag alright. Last time they were unable to read my finger prints but laughed it off, while I was sweating bullets, had flown from outside Ireland, no pre clearance.

I get a bit fed up with several threads being diverted by Gaza. Of course Gaza is important, but I was looking for a discussion about the Trump administration's reckless and inhumane immigration policies, and the possible dangers which there might be for inocent Europeans.

No but only because it's expensive and I hate their tipping culture. To be honest if I only visited places that had political systems I agree with, I wouldn't have visited half the places I have. Half the people saying the US is now off limits because of politics will probably be off to Turkey or Dubai. Just follow the immigration rules and you'll be fine. Honestly I've been to full on dictatorships and when you're a tourist you barely notice it.

Be respectful of the country? But what you're saying is that people have to be respectful of the current political administration? And in the case of the french guy who was denied entry, he should have never expressed any negative opinion about Trump, while he wasn't even in the US? And let's say that he was pro trump and democrats get in next time, should democrats refuse him entry because he was once pro trump?

If only the rest of the globe had something worth seeing instead.

I've always wanted to do the trans siberian railway. However I won't be doing that for obvious reasons.

I'd love to see the old persian ruins in Iran. I won't be going there either.

There's a whole world out there, just because someone doesn't want to see your favorite place because of the dodgy politics there, doesn't mean that they need to get a life.

If I had to go to the US I would but I'm not about to choose to go there. Likewise I'm trying to cutback on american brands and buy more Irish/German/European. The US has shown that it's not a dependable ally/friend. There's a slight increase in risk in going there and it's honestly not worth it when there's a whole planet out there.

Imagine turning up at an airport, having all your paperwork in order and then being told to go home because they searched your phone and found a message criticizing Fianna fail. That's what the discussion is about. But feel free to rephrase it to make yourself feel right.

Just on the topic of fentanyl. There's a huge amount of drug use in a lot of cities there. Dublin and Galway are lovely in comparison. And I've never seen anything like the level of homelessness I've seen here. It's genuinely shocking when you witness it.

First of all, it wasn't the republicans who send them back to the land of baguettes and white flags, it was an immigration officer. My point was that you can't disrespect the american people and their democratically elected president and still expect to be welcome and be granted the privilege of entering their country - and if you have something like the "orange baboon and the nazis who voted him" on your social media posts you should be rejected even if the democrats are in power. Ans let me tell you something else: if you're interviewing for a job they will also search your social media - because getting that job, just like entering a country, is a privilege and not a right.

But the poster I was quoting said.

"the only thing I'll regret is never seeing the grand canyon."

It's them who bought up wanting to see the grand canyon, I just confirmed that it was worth seeing.

Yeah no thanks. I thought it was the land of free speech and you can't criticise their president? You lot really twist yourselves in knots over this dope.

The Grand canyon is impressive, so too are the giant Sequoia forests and the route one drive in California.

I wouldn't put anyone off going to see them now, but the Trump atmosphere would put me returning.

You lot are always about free speech doesn't mean lack of consequences so there you have it, consequences. They are still free to criticize US president, but do it from outside US. I think it's fair.

That makes no sense. We'll probably see people getting denied entry for not even saying thank you or wearing a suit!

I'm sure we will. But even so, it's their country, they can refuse entry to anyone for whatever reason, including no reason at all.

Biden was sleeping at the wheel and let standards slip

It's not the specific purpose of this thread, and Biden is in the past, but stuff like this deserves to be called out. Biden proposed a bill that was widely accepted was going to make significant changes in resources allocated to the border and even the Border guards recommended that it be passed. Trump then told Republicans to kill it because he wanted to be able to use the border as a campaign tool.

Whatever about looking at the past through rose tinted glasses, this wasn't long ago enough that people can claim ignorance about what really happened.

And the way the current captain is cracking the whip is what has this thread started and active. A lot of people are very concerned about what they are seeing coming out of the US and its current administration. Trump is very short sighted if he thinks the amount of unease and dislike people worldwide are feeling towards America is in any way making it great again. And the erosion of due process and the blatant use of the justice system to threaten people and settle old scores is going to leave a mark that will take a long time to clean.

Whan you visit a country you are generally subject to its laws, and I presume you are subject to the relevant bits of the US Constitution. These include the right to Due Process, so I presume that if you are accused of a crime, you are subject to the same procedures as a US citizens (except that they may deport you at some stage). But if you are afforded tha basic protection of the laws and the Constitution as a foreign visitor to the US, what about First Amendment rights? Do these apply to just US citizens of to anyone who is legally in the US? Any lawyers to answer this?

OF couse it is plain bad manners to sound off about the domestic policies of a country you are visiting. That's a different matter from the legal question. None of this justifies snooping into people's phones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,802 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

They were messages. Not even social media posts. They were found when searching his phone. Disrespecting a country is now saying something uncomplimentary about the leader of that country in your private life?

And even if it was social media, it's not in any of the criteria for entry. If saying something bad about the US's scientific policies is disallowed, shouldn't that be included in the pre-screening?

Can you imagine if the UK government had kicked out people because they disagreed with Brexit or thought the Tories were terrible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,589 ✭✭✭Cordell

No one was kicked out, they were just not allowed in. Big difference. You can be refused entry on trivial reasons like not having a hotel booked, not having enough money or not having return flights booked.

How much hopeful thinking is it that under a Pete Buttigieg President in February 2029 that Elon Musk is told to get the F back to South Africa?

And sure send Melania back to Slovenia at the same time. Both of them have dubious records with respect to their having entered the country and ultimately getting visas.

Definitely if the former happened, America would improve overnight.

I believe the words for this type of wish include pipe and dream.

All of which are a red flag to immigration that you are there for reasons other then stated, you mauiverstsy for example.

Having private communications on your phone discussing countries government or leader is not. Unless of course you're entering China or North Korea

Having private communications on your phone discussing countries government or leader is not

Sometimes it will go much more private than that (and this is UK not US):
