The last I heard was that he was supposed to be fit for the last game of the league, but I haven't heard anything lately. I don't know does he add anything to the current panel? He has great pace but he doesn't score, i think he only managed 6 points for the whole championship last year.

I think he showed great potential at one point but I don't think he has really fulfilled it and seems to be made of glass, which of course will always be hindrance to any player trying to reach their best.

He 100% adds something to the panel, was excellent against Dublin last year from wing forward. Injuries have been a problem for him though, hope he can stay fit this year

Tommy played all 14 matches last year between league and championship, and every match in 2023 once he returned from his cruciate injury during the league.

His form has been up and down admittedly but I think the new rules will suit him down to the ground. He can beat any defender 1v1 but got bottled up often in recent years by blanket defences.

Also if he plays deeper the extra space would be ideal for him similar to how Mattie Ruane and Sean Bugler are making hay.

What injury does he have now actually?

Poor year last year but if he gets back to his best (which is a doubt due to all the injuries), he definitely has something to add to the squad. It's not as if the squad is blessed with natural forwards.

He scored 10 points between the 7 championship games. Not outstanding but 7/10 points came in our three toughest games i.e. Galway, Dublin and Derry.

At the very least I'd have far more confidence in Tommy coming off the bench than Boland or Towey.

such comments would be frowned upon by certain contrarian Podcasters who hold both of those players in exceptionally high regard.

the podcasters, or the players held in exceptionally high regard?. There’s really only 2 podcasts when it comes to Mayo football so if you listen to them it should be obvious. One in particular has a habit of making great players out of lads that get less game time - the Richey Feeney effect, as it were. The less they play the better they get, and any mistakes they make are ignored and excused as a result of “less game time” as opposed to less talent than players who get selected ahead of them.

This existed in Mayo long before podcasts. Austin O'Malley would have won us the 2004 and 2006 All Irelands with "how he was going in training"

I only listen to Ah Ref, the Mayo News one has gone behind a paywall now hasn't it? Haven't listened to it in some time but presume it's the Mayo News one so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,781 ✭✭✭muddle84

I stand corrected on the scoring!

I really think he has potential, but I don't think we've seen the best of him since his injury. Hopefully he gets to his best this year when he returns. Maybe the new rules will suit him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Westernview

A fully fit TC would have to be an asset but only if playing in half forward line running on to balls or else coming off the bench. He gets too bottled up in the ff line. His pace is a huge asset but whether he still has it after all the injuries remains to be seen. Both him and Oisin were the 2 standout prospects in 2020. But sadly we never got to see either at their peak in a Mayo jersey. Maybe Tommy can get there yet.

Some former Mayo News journalists would be involved (either at the front like Mike or frequent guests like Ed or Ger), but Mayo Football Podcast wouldn't have anything to do with the paper. That pod is John/Mike/Rob's independent work.

Have to imagine it's AhRef (& more specifically, Enda) being referenced. Both Ref & Enda would hold Fergie & Paul (or any natural scoring forward to be fair - they'd be the same with Evan Regan, Brian Reape or Cian McHale when he recovers from the surgery) in high regard.

Just to put some context on it, there is a genuine (non-RFE) reason for it.
I'm not sure any of us would suggest either Fergie or Paul has hit close to top gear yet. Yet they're still sitting 1st & 3rd on our scored from play per 70 minutes.

Apologies, that (Mayo Football Podcast) was the one I meant. I subscribed to it for a few months when it went to the paid version but didn't renew.

I regularly listen to AhRef and I wouldn't have said that they're too OTT in their talk about Boland or Towey. Enda does go on a fair bit at times, maybe I'm just used to blanking out some of that stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Westernview

Has Mike Finnerty left the Mayo News entirely? I knew that Michael Gallagher had taken over as sports editor.

Enda goes on a lot about having natural forwards but Regan and Reape were tried before and didn't set the world alight. It's one thing doing it at club level but another at intercounty. Players like Towey and Boland are skillful but don't have huge physicality or athleticism. With ROD there we can only accommodate so many smaller players. Ball winning ability and stamina for tracking back is very important nowadays. But maybe the new rules will help the ball players.

Yeah (vague memories of it being confirmed on the blog around Christmas). Though, as you mention, pretty under the radar given what a prominent figure he'd be for all us football fans.

All valid points on the 'cons' side of having that type of profile. A tough balancing act getting that blend right between the bigger ball winners & nippy/skillful danger men (especially with the new rules, you could make a strong case for 100% of either and manage to make it work). It'll always be trading certain pros & cons for others, with few direct upgrades comparing players (even comparing a Darren McHale to a Fergie Boland, who in theory would be similar, offer so many different nuances). A case of calls that ended up working versus ones that didn't really, that we'll only ever know for sure in hindsight.

I’m sure my comments will rattle some here and elsewhere but I just don’t really get the hype around Towey. Notwithstanding TsuDoNimhs stats around his scores I’d wonder who those were against and in what competition.

My view is that Boland is ahead of him by a good distance and Boland could certainly argue for a spot in the starting 15.

Towey is a good option to have on the bench but I just don’t see the argument to give him a starting position at the expense of players that I would personally rate more highly.

I know he’s outstanding at club level but that really is a different ball game, with opposition that have a very different level of skill, conditioning and physicality than inter county level. He does make mistakes at intercounty level and I’ve seen him get dispossessed too easily too many times. I just don’t see him as a solution to any of our problems, certainly not enough to understand the reputation he’s built up from not getting game time.

Those are all just numbers from this league campaign, hence the 241 minutes (a little less than 3 & 1/2 games) played.

    Paul:
    0-2 vs Dublin R1
    0-5 vs Galway R2
    0-2 vs Armagh R4

    Fergie:
    0-4 vs Dublin R1
    0-2 vs Tyrone R3
    0-1 vs Kerry R5

(Just throwing these out there as I have them at hand and related to the topic. Not suggesting they swing the discussion one way or the other, a lot more to an overall team performance than just a look at individual scorers out of context)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Westernview

One player that I've been a bit disappointed with so far is Jack Carney. He is a few years on the panel now and has visibly bulked up. His earlier performances with Kilmeena suggested he had more in the locker but now he looks more limited. Perhaps he is being given a particular role helping out at midfield and tracking back but I'd like to see him get into scoring positions more often.

Lets be honest,Enda is a simpleton.

I think even Ref is a bit embarrassed that he's stuck with him now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,051 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

He only came back late in the league though, late sub vs Amargh was his first game back I think? Thought he did ok against Kerry and Derry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭flasher0030

I haven't experienced hype around Paul Towey. I think he is recognised by nearly everybody as someone who can show nice skills when given space. But that he doesn't have a particularly great work ethic, and that he is limited in size and strength. He is a very good footballer, but not strong, dynamic, fast enough for inter-county standard.

But I think he is only around 24 or 25. So still has time on his hands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,657 ✭✭✭Blackjack

thanks for that - I had a notion the numbers may be for a longer period of time than this league campaign but the above makes sense alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Westernview

He has improved in recent games I'd agree but I'd like to see him nail down his place as one of the main men this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,853 ✭✭✭HBC08

I would have agreed until this season. He promised a lot but only delivered in fits and starts.I think the last few games since he came back has been his best run in a Mayo jersey. He could light up the summer this year.

I'd agree with you on Towey, but I don't think he has ever got the game time he's getting this year. I'm interested to see if he keeps the stats up into Championship.

If I was Tim, I'd be looking for a refund on this kind of shocking attempt at PR (I'll give the benefit of the doubt this isn't the man himself). It simply undermines him and makes (those around) him look incompetent.

If you're going to join a community and try astroturfing like this, at the very least you have to put up a handful of non-partisan posts on the topic rather than just questionably promoting poor decisions.

I'm guessing that's a former Mayo GAA fan account on twitter now, that has been bought out to use as a slightly smarter attempt at a similar PR push. I'd have expected the folks that used to be behind it should know that this isn't breaking news, we've all known about it since 2015 and it has been discussed in the media many times over the years due to various restructuring of the repayments around Covid and beyond.

One decent example: https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/mayo-board-restructures-its-79m-debt-on-machale-park/41113327.html of the very many available out there.

Potentially a valid question on whether Croke Park's involvement in this type of financial arrangement is completely legit (I've no knowledge or view on that one) but the idea that this is a shocking revelation once again makes the source & their various helpers appear significantly less than informed on the topic.

I don't know does he add anything to the current panel?

I'm sorry but that is a daft statement.

Of course he adds something, we are hardly blessed with forwards.

I know he has been injury prone but we saw spells from him last year to suggest he could be coming good again.
