That was a bit embarrassing imo

When Ronaldo was in his prime Hojland was around 9 or 10 years old. Hojland probably worshipped him and saw him as an idol, in much the same way other little kids did.

    Nothing embarrassing about it imo.

Well done Rasmus…….. I'm pleased for the lad.

Yip, he said in pre and post match interviews that Ronaldo was his idol and biggest influence growing up.

It's nice to be focusing on his goal celebrations now.

He's directly said he loves Ronaldo, his idol. Got into football and United because of Ronaldo, according to him. So I'd reckon it's not ment to be mockery from him (agreeing with you, not thinking I'm contradicting you!)

That's it. I read previously that he looked up to Ronaldo. It's a nonsense story about rubbing it in.

Did anyone get embarrassed when Garnacho did it?

Only got around to watching that lengthy video of the architects explaining the stadium last night. Was taken aback by how little detail had actually been decided upon. Maybe that's standard for this stage of design but everything seems to be up for discussion or consultation.

And oddly, the one thing that the architect seemed sure about was the fact that the pitch wouldn't be retractable ("football first" being cited) like some other new stadia... But that goes against they said about it being a venue for concerts etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭Anything4883

Not on that occasion, because he was playing with him.

Embarrassed? That's what's ruining football. Players or fans can't do or say things on the fly anymore. Everything has to be perfect and calculated for social media so someone doesn't get offended or embarrassed on behalf of someone else.

I reckon Ronaldo took it as a huge compliment(not that he needs anymore) to have a young striker doing his celebration like that.

Remember the 90s when players could celebrate how they liked and take shirts off and show passion without embarrassing someone.

I had the same reaction - if they were/are serious about starting before the end of the year being an ambition, how do they not know if there will be a big screen, or where the players tunnel would be, for example.

Can you apply for planning permission based on the outside of the ground (ie. we want to build a stadium here…) or do you need fully finished drawings? I know there will always being changes during construction but these seem like some fundemental questions.

On the concert piece - you can 'just' put a covering over the pitch - which is what they do in a lot of similar situations. And their video showed concert events in the stadium so its clearly part of the consideration.

I assume the football first nature of that is the mechanisms for retracting the pitch could require additional space between the pitch and the stands - and they seem focused o having the stands as close as possible to the pitch. But the new Madrid build doesn't seem lke there is much distance and theirs retracts - though theirs retracts under the pitch in a lift scenario - severl levels below the pitch into maintenance areas (kinda mind blowing!)

I know they said the current stuff we have seen is more concept and goal, and I have seen people say the detail will be done over the next 6 months or so which will define EXACTLY what the plan is - where the Munich clock would go etc etc - but as you say, it feels like there are way more decisions still to be made than I would have thought given how they have presented it.

Agreed, it didn't really inspire much confidence for me.

I can't see how they could apply for planning based on the lack of details they have at present... They don't know the slope of the stands and I would imagine that is fundamental to planning as it's going to affect the height of the stadium. The other things like tunnel positioning, screens etc mightn't be as important for planning.

I kind of checked out when they focused in on the model of the Stretford End and the architect said something like, oh this is an old model with three tiers, we're not going to go with three tiers anymore.

The whole thing seemed like a rushed school project, a very elaborate one in fairness. I joked about the initial video of the stadium when it first came out a while ago saying it was like they just asked ChatGPT to create a futuristic stadium for Manchester United, maybe that wasn't far off the case.

I suppose I can see the angle that they've now created a vision for the stadium and outside development... and that's important to have in order to get buy in from whoever they need to get behind it… but the lack of actual details don't inspire confidence in their timelines.

With the apparent need for government assistance on the infrastucture I wonder if they have ineed rushed this initial view out so that the regeneration funding requirements are in the disucssion for the budgets that will be announced in the next few months - where as if they waited longer on the stadium piece the budget plans for this year would be nailed down and possibly there is greater difficulty down the line if money is allocated this year to other things.

The other side is if they need investment partners to fund it, this was possibly a sales pitch to them more than anything else (especially from a property development point of view). So now they can go to various banks, funds, global brands and offer up investment opportuniities based on an announced plan rather than something they need to keep under wraps.

Like I didn't expect to get full plans now - I knew they would still be work to be done on the implementation plans - but they don't seem to be in a situation to even start those, which is suprising based on their 'stsart by the end of the year' comment they put out there.

But then I have zero idea how all this actually works - maybe 6/7 months is more than enough time to make those decisions and have a whole team of architects building out the plans.

Also, if they hadn't given a starting time line of this year (as a hope) I'd probably not bat an eye lid at this - because I expected the first announcement to be either (1) we have decided to build a new stadium or (2) we have decided to refurb OT, and here is the concept and vision we are working towards. That makes sense to me, and is essentially what we go.

I didn't expect 'We are building a new stadium and here are the now completed designs'. IMO it makes sense that the type of thing we saw formed part of the Build vs Redevelop discussion and what could be achieved with either approach. Its just the time line they spoke of makes things seem more speculative than it should

I'm no expert but I seen Whitwell or someone else discussing it and basically saying that lord Foster and his company would not be going along with a half arsed attempted of designing a stadium for the craic of it. They are the most respected architecture company in the world.

The video and plans we have been shown are a fairly far on concept to show something to investers to get money behind it that's why it seems rushed. I'd imagine over next few months it will be refined and fan engagement will settle the plans like fosters said. Again they wouldn't say thaf to a lease united they don't want to damage their reputation so I'd assume that fan engagement most definitely happen.

If it was just United revealing the plans and no one else I'd be concerned but the fact that fosters company and the government to an extent have all put their weight behind it gives me confidence. Also Ineos are used to projects even bigger than this it's nothing to them to organise it.

I don't think we were doubting the quality of, or the buy in from, the architects… think we were taken back by just how much of it seems to be in the concept stage, and given the aggressive timeline, that was surprising for me. When I heard about consultation processes I automatically think of fairly drawn out processes

Creating a 3D rendering of the stadium in something like Revit is not a difficult task. For planning purposes you don't need to have every detail locked down either. The building shell height and other dimensions, roadways for emergency serives, etc need to be outlined but you don't need a 100% CD set for planning purposes. It's probably going to take at least 2 years of planning consultations anyway before it gets a green light so plenty of time to finalize the internal design.

The timelines being proposed are completely reasonable in my opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,041 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

If 2 years for planning - how is it reasonable that we start this year, or complete by 2030/31? If we are two years off breaking ground feels like a long long time til anything is finished.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,119 ✭✭✭✭JRant

The start would be the planning process in my mind. There's no way they are breaking ground in 9 months and I never read it that way myself. For any large scale project like this the start date is when you apply for planning.

Plus, it's probably about a year of intensive building work to build the thing as well. It helps b ing a mostly green field site so a lot of pre-work can be done in a very quick timeframe.

There's a power of work to be done on infrastructure before anything starts on the stadium. Container base moved, train lines moved, stations built, demolition, new/upgraded roads etc. I'd say the stadium model and surrounding area is more to get all this underway. It'll be 1-2 years to do all the preliminary stuff, plenty of time to be working on detailed design

Decent couple of weeks for the club. The stadium will be amazing once its done. Into the QF of the EL with a dominant performance. Next 5 are Forest, City, Lyon, NUFC, Lyon. All eggs need to be in the EL basket.

Chelsea must pay Manchester United £5m if Jadon Sancho loan is not turned permanent in summer. 24yo winger left #MUFC on temporary basis with buy obligation worth up to £25m but #CFC can opt out for set fee. W/ @liam_twomey @SJohnsonSport @TheAthleticFC

How disappointing. All that Freedom eh
