I'd be fine with not having a right to hold a political onion. I have zero interest in Irish politics.

But why would I vote for parties I can't stand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,856 ✭✭✭✭BattleCorp

That's democracy though, innit. They have what they voted for.

Honest question. How do you know most of them are entirely ignorant of who and what he is and represents? I would have thought everyone in the States would know who and what he is and what he represents. I mean, who doesn't think he is a big ignorant fcuker who doesn't engage the brain before he speaks?

And for the record, I'm neither for nor against Trump. I agree with some of his policies and totally disagree with others. Kind of like how I feel about our Government here in Ireland.

That’s great, don’t vote, let the adults make decisions

But you’d be ok if everyone agreed with you, right?

You probably just haven't met a properly left wing politician. There's very few of them anymore. A centrist would have very different views to some on the hard left.

There are no elected elected left wing politicians in the US. Even Bernie Saunders is right of centre. Any sort of left wing politics was stamped out during McCarthyism.

There's plenty who thought he was great and was going to be doing fantastic things when he got back into power who are now out of a job, believing that he was only going to be targeting the people they didn't like. There's others who are sh*tting themselves over the threats to their social security checks too, because they rely on them to live. And yet more who shop for cheap overseas imported goods that are going to see the prices of those goods rise because they hadn't a clue what a tariff meant.

Also, believe it or not, there are actual people out there that don't think he's a "big ignorant fcuker who doesn't engage his brain before he speaks". Conversely they think he's the best thing to happen in American politics and is going "make America great again".

    Absolutely astonishing…I know.

Were we asked to send eggs to US too? What did we say?

US Department of Agriculture had sent formal inquiries to egg-producing countries in late February seeking information on their ability and willingness to export eggs to the American market.

I have some bad news for you.

    That's not an echo chamber

Your view/opinion being the minority, doesn't make it an echo chamber.

Nor does people thanking other people's posts. Post thanking isn't something I would even notice, I'm curious why you would or why you feel it matters

Allegedly, according to that paper of truth; the Daily Mail, some-one in Tesla's legal Dept sent an email to Trumps US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer that the president's trade war with Canada and Mexico is bad for business. The tariffs will likely drive up costs for American companies that use the metals, such as automakers. The unsigned missive was supposedly uploaded to the public comment portal for Greer by one of Tesla's in house lawyers. The automaker said it is important to ensure that the Trump administration's efforts to address trade issues 'do not inadvertently harm U.S. companies.'

Again allegedly, the email said it was eager to avoid retaliation of the type it faced in prior trade disputes, which resulted in increased tariffs on electric vehicles imported into countries subject to U.S. tariffs. 'U.S. exporters are inherently exposed to disproportionate impacts when other countries respond to U.S. trade actions,' the letter reads. 'For example, past trade actions by the United States have resulted in immediate reactions by the targeted countries, including increased tariffs on EVs imported into those countries.

Either the Daily Mail has gone seriously off the rails or some-one may have mischievously hacked it's computer system to upload this strange tale unto the papers online publications. If it's genuinely the way Tesla allows it's staff to offer opinions, I cant imagine how Trump would react, should some-one let him know about the Mail's story, given how Trump does not like casual email controls.

The same publication [and other UK publications] is also running an online report that Trump has instructed the US military to work up a plan on how to seize and take the Panama Canal Zone under US control.

I've relations in the States who love him, and some of the same family over there who hate him. Can't please everyone. There's no indifference, either people love him or hate him. And unfortunately for those who hate him, they are stuck with him for the next 4 years unless someone takes a pop at him again.

To be honest too many American's are ignorant idiots that don't even do basic research about the candidates they vote for, get fed weapons grade bullshít from the likes of Faux News, fascist xcretements from Musk the snowflake, have had subtle but significant distortion of reality from the likes of facebook along with a media that is controlled by corrupt billionaires that repeatedly sanewashed Trump's BS over and over. Worst of all too many were lazy, pontificating over Biden's handling of Gaza despite the fact the Jewish lobby has a strong hold in both parties, all while completely disregarding the fact the alternative aka Trump and friends didn't give a toss about them and would happily allow Israel to glass the place into a parking lot if they could get away with it.

As a result they now have a convict orange vatnik loving idiot of a President, enabling a Ketamine addled South African Snowflake to wreak havok in the federal goverment and who have proceeded to tank the economy not even 2 months after taking power with pointless stupid Trump Taxes (Tariffs) that serve no end other than to weaken the US. These people besides being obvious fascists and liberty thieves are happily enabling billionaires to gain more money via tax benefits and other dodgy dealings and who's empowerment only makes things worse in the long run both at home and abroad. These kinds of people are a general pox on society in general as no single individual should have billions in wealth and have the kind of financial power thats equal to nation states, they're the kinds of bastards who threaten democracies with their corruption. If anything they used to hit the super rich with 90% tax rates decades ago which prevented this sort of thing happening as it forced those people to divert that wealth to others down the chain preventing wealth concentration we see today.

Ditto, and also more people didn't vote for either candidates in the last election too.

Since his second term has started, he's called for the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, has extorted Ukraine, has targeted anyone he views as a political enemy, treated Zelensky disgracefully and is in the process of starting multiple trade wars that will lead to a global recession. And you think it's surprising that he's pretty much universally despised in Ireland? That's as a result of his actions and has nothing to do with some nefarious press.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,034 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Why on earth would I vote for people who have turned my country into a total kip?

You're saying you wouldn't vote for the people who want to protect the natural resources and environment? The ones who want everyone to have access to affordable healthcare? The ones who want education to be accessible and affordable and not to result in life long saddling debt? The ones who want to have workplace standards and regulations so that you get paid annual leave and sick leave and maternity leave if you or your partner has a child? The ones who want everyone to have the option of marrying who they love? The ones who want to ensure that if you are a person of colour that you will have a better chance of being considered for a job or promotion?

You wouldn't vote for any of that? Strange.

Also, if you think most of US media is left wing, you need to recalibrate whatever metric you are using to judge them.

A bit of reading for you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window Left, right, and centre policies and opinions are in a constant state of flux. Centrism now and centrism 50 years ago are not the same because the centre is not a snapshot of history that never changes.

Well, he's a person you can't be indifferent to. He requires you to take a position. The only thing that's remarkable about him is that there are people out there that will fawn over him. It's so depressingly astounding that he isn't simply dismissed by everyone as the fraudulent conman that he is.

Political leaders across Greenland all united today to release a joint statement today pushing back against Trumps attempt to annex them.

"Our country will never be the USA and we Greenlanders will never be Americans," Egede wrote on Facebook. "Don't keep treating us with disrespect. Enough is enough."

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2ljrjeqzq4o

MAGAt's will tell us this is a sign of Trump uniting people.

The main potash exporting countries are Canada, Russia and Belarus.

Tariffs on Canada might as well be a subsidy for Russia and it's neighbour.

When even right wing newspapers-albeit at completely different ends of the scale in triviality and seriousness-such as the Daily Mail and the Wall Street Journal are pointing out problems with his policies and criticizing him, it certainly points to dreadful shortcomings in both his actions and his character…to say the very least.

If what The Independent has written is correct even the dead are not safe from Trumps anti-D.E.I drive. Arlington National Cemetery has purged dozens of pages of information about famous Black, Hispanic and female veterans from its website to comply with President Donald Trump’s diversity, equity and inclusion executive order. The purge follows Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s declaration that “DEI is dead” as he implements Trump’s agenda at the Pentagon.

One of Trump’s many executive orders was banning DEI in federal programs, and Pentagon bosses have carried out orders to remove any content that “promotes” it. That includes removing internal links to educational materials on the cemetery’s website.

On the website’s “Notable Graves” dropdown menu, African American History, Hispanic American History and Women’s History no longer appear, screenshots taken by Armed forces outlet Task & Purpose comparing it in December 2024 and now show. Officials confirmed to the outlet that some pages had been “unpublished.” In a statement to The Independent, an Army spokesperson said it was “working diligently to return removed content” but did not specify when it would return. “We are proud of our educational content and programming and working diligently to return removed content to ensure alignment with Department of Defense instruction 5400.17 and Executive Orders issued by the President,” the spokesperson said. “We remain committed to sharing the stories of military service and sacrifice to the nation with transparency and professionalism, while continuing to engage with our community in a manner that reflects our core values.”

Edit: I notice that for some reason the way I typed this is not what showed up after I posted it. The system has put a gap between "The Hispanic and" and the next two words "female veterans" which is strange as I had typed the five words on the same line.

Trump has been giving a rambling, bitter and nonsensical speech to the Justice Department saying that the likes of CNN and MSDNC (sic) are illegal because they criticise him. And that people who criticise(d) Aileen Cannon also behaved illegally. He's bragging about removing FBI personell who dealt with the Jan 6 cases, and other government people who acted 'against' him. And bragging about freeing the Jan 6th hostages - speaking to the Justice Department. Free speech? Freedom of the press? He is running wild.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,159 ✭✭✭relax carry on

He is running wild and the American political/judicial system seems either apathetic to him, totally ineffective or compromised by him. So who's going to stop him and his merry band of sycophants from destabilizing the world even more?

I see the Republican reps in Minnesota are refusing to hold town halls in their districts because of the backlash they fear they're going to get.

So Tim Walz is going to go to those districts and hold them instead.

Great idea. Democrats could learn a lot from people like him.

Alot of people wouldn't vote for a bellicose reality TV star over pensionable age, either, but that particular hurdle was overcome by having a message that may not be rooted in hope or basic facts, but did viscerally connect with voters to motivate them to the polls.

The Republican Party and Trump managed to do something that the Democrats appear to still have no clue on and it's how to build a strong, ideologically-unified coalition of voters. They don't appear to have any really good idea on this other than sort of having Trump do the work for them and get the anti-Trump vote out as opposed to having a strong message of their own that can rally their base under one banner.

They need a Trump of their own in the sense of an outsider who'll come in and cut a swathe through the banal party offerings, but more positivity and less dark demagoguery. But then again, maybe fear and anger is simply a stronger force…
