Why aren't there as many rugby songs as football ones?

"There is an isle" & "Beautiful, Beautiful Munsters" are all that's needed 😉

With the Fields & Stand up and fight for Thomond Park, I remember being in the East stand for this particular rendition the week after Axel's death.

As for why not more songs? I'd like to think of it as a recognition by fans that it's the team that matters. The effort of every player lifts the whole, hence no player songs or chants. The individual rarely matters as much in a rugby match as in a football match

Football is an escape from poverty, tyranny, corruption for many people across the world. It is very politicized. Huge amounts of drama, corruption, money, marketing, advertising, nationalism, ... in the mix

Rugby is something you can try and if it doesn't work out, you can continue your architecture degree. It's played by a handful of homogenous countries/cultures with none of the political issues football has. No drama. The Fields of Athenry lyrics bear no relation to the real lives of any rugby player or supporter. You've even got The Lions where most of the teams join up for a jolly.

My 2 cents.

Because football is a more passionate, tribal sport than rugby.

Irish rugby is attended by more event junkies these days, people who can afford the ticket price and want to be seen there. A lot haven't a baldies of the rules even. It's a cool time to follow Irish rugby cos we're doing well. Watch the Aviva empty next time we have a slump in fortunes.
