Italy isn't a dead rubber. We have to go out a d assume the Scots will beat France. 5 points is a must

    it’s a dead rubber.

    France on 16 points

    England will be on 15

    And we have 14

It’s done. Toast. We are playing for prize money at best.

Nobody is going to 'assume' that Scotland will beat France, hope is the word.

Not being smart here but Jacks last 3 games he was subbed to give other new players game time in test matches and that’s what should happen to blood new players, but it shows management are not giving him a fair crack and in the 6N he is used to block holes and injuries, the sad thing about this is Leinster fans can’t see the big picture about Sam he is young and real untested until yesterday, club rugby support should be left aside when it comes to the national team, putting pressure on Sam with goat talk is stupid, let him grow.

so we are down to “well the coaches think Sam is better” and not that the fact he is a poor international 10.

I’m basing this off his 6N performances across all his matches, from multiple intercepts thrown to multiple missed kicks out of hand and at goal, to having no ball in hand threat, to being a poor tackler and defender.

If Jack Crowley had performed this poorly in four 6N games I would have expected him to be dropped.

I will always believe what I’m seeing with my own eyes and not what a journalist tells me I’ve seen.

Just looked there and Finn Smith is 9 months older and is up on 90 senior appearances

Prendergast is on 32, this is

I really don't care if the coaches think/knows Sam is the better of the two, it's the bit piece appearances that Jack is being given during the 6Ns that's somewhat annoying. Posters talk about building depth and ignore the time Jack has been allowed play at outhalf. How's that building depth.

Then cast your mind back to how Jack was held accountable by posters here for the NZ loss (a match we were winning when Jack was subbed off) and the outhalf yesterday escapes the same scrutiny.

McCarthy's was ridiculous (on his part). It was brain dead. It was almost akin to a slap in the face to his team mates. But, when I take a deep breath, it was obviously just a disastrous decision under pressure.

Professional sport is all about making the right decisions under pressure. McCarthy's superiority in other areas is undermined by his failure in this area. I would pick Ryan ahead of him.

Nash yellow card was much more unfortunate. He had dropped for the tackle & it was more absorbing than attacking. Had it been a pen only, I wouldn't have been overly surprised but I also concede that a yellow wasn't outrageous.

by the way, how can it be possible to see so many french supporters in Aviva Stadium yesterday ?

When you add 2 years onto all those ages for the next RWC I think we are in massive trouble already for that competition because there isn’t the time to develop the next crop of players with enough experience playing against teams that are in the top 5 in the world, and that’s before you question the actual desire of the mgt to do it.

The question is this - In 12 months we have gone from being 21 points better than France to 15 points worse than them. What players can we bring it that will turn that around? and what changes can we make that will make us RWC contenders because this side is on a downward trajectory currently.

Would Ireland have scored our two late tries if France hadn't already put 40 on us. Personally, I think France has switched off a bit and if you look at Shaun Edwards after the game, he also thinks France were a bit more passive in defence at that stage.

It was a humbling experience for our guys yesterday.

Aside from the first 15 minutes (we didn't score) and a score at either side of halftime it was all France

Well it's a problem of our own making, at least half the players on that list should have been moved on at the end of last season at the latest…the tour to SA should have been their sendoff…but as usual we rather just flog a dead horse.

There's plenty of time between now and the RWC to change things, we had an older team this time 4 years ago (average age of 30 in 2021 compared to 29 yeserday) and yet we were fine come the RWC.

Comes down to if the management will make the neccessary changes.

indeed, South Africa has the same problem, their team is even older than the irish one, that s why Erasmus has announced extra games for 2025 in order to shape a new team…

    Ireland u20.png

    U20 results between from 2018 to 2023.

Not to mention a 2nd and 4th place finish in the last 2 RWC's.

France are a joy to watch when playing at their best. We hoped the 7-1 split would cost them and it looked very like it when Dupont had to leave the pitch but they bringing on their bomb squad at around the same time as Nash's card showed us they meant business and played some excellent rugby.

Before the game if we were told they'd be without their best player, the world's top scrumhalf and a flanker playing in the centre we'd be talking about BP wins yet we still couldn't grab hold of the game in a period where that actually happened.

we were fine in the last World Cup were we?

Ranked first in the world and hammered in the QF? That’s fine is it?

There is time to develop players, but how many more games will we have against top tier teams? Maybe 10-12? How many new players are going to get starts in those games?

I was shot down after the World Cup for suggesting a lot of the players wouldn't make it to 2037 and there was a dire need to rebuild. If there was a bit more of a spread of ages then we could have dealt with it by evolution and it's nearly every position there is a question mark over.

The IRFU really need to sort out the ticket situation, the only people I know who get to go to these games are going as part of a corporate junket.

The atmosphere is night and day when you see champions cup or provincial games there.

I would much prefer to see seats being given to provincial season ticket holders in a lottery system - would get more diehards in and would massively improve the atmosphere. You’d probably get people buying season tickets for the chance to get these tickets too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,245 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

How many of those U20 players have broken into the senior team to be a started within 5 years? Is it one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭CalmaftertheGav

A 4-point defeat is a hammering? The squad itself was fine, the issues were more about how the squad was managed. Arguably played too many minutes in the PS when they didnt need to.

We have more than enough time, it comes down to if our management make the right decisions. And it starts with doing away with sentimental crap like giving players "send offs" when we are in the middle of trying to win a Grand Slam…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,245 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

While it might have been an idea in certain positions back then it’s most certainly a necessity in many positions now.

Props, 6, 7, 10, are all an issue currently, and midfield, is quickly becoming a problem with the age profile.

We need to realize we are possibly in a post Furlong era now. His days of being consistently available seem gone and his lack of game time is a problem now. If he gets back it’s hard to see him lasting long without another injury

The bottom line is we need more top level players. The IRFU need to invest in ALL four URC teams, we have the blueprint with Leinster, we need to copy it, starting with the schools.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,042 ✭✭✭typhoony

Collectively those u20 Irish teams played great but when I look back over those last 5 years and try to pick out a potential super talented player in the backs I'm struggling to find even one. I wouldn't even put Prendergast in there as he had a poor JWC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭CalmaftertheGav

Nope, collectively & player wise they were great. That's why they did as well as they did.

Using the "collective" excuse is the lazy answer people give when the facts dont support their argument.

Im a Leinster supporter. I don't really buy the hype around Sam and he'd a poor game yesterday. He's had cracking games for Leinster but urc and cc very different.

Id have been happy with Crowley in yesterday as he is a stronger defender. Whether it would have changed much I dunno. Management see something in Sam but whether this ceiling is sextonesque only time will tell. He's had on ok tournament.

Spare a thought for Frawley too. He didn't do much wrong much like Crowley.
