Eir showing 7Mb broadband, but technician says there's fibre available in my house?

Every time I've searched any provider except Virgin, I get told I'm capped at 7Mb connection.

I have an Eir cabinet on the street just outside my house. I spoke to an Eir technician working on it once, and he said that my house is physically wired for Gb speeds. And it's a mystery to him why I'm not getting that when I type in my Eircode.

Is there anything I can do to unlock these speeds with any providers?

Try the Comreg checker to see what wholesale providers are available to you -

Don't know if there's anything you can do if they all say that 7Mb is all you can get

Thanks. It says 3.4Mb on there for Open Eir, which is even worse!

Hypothetically, if I signed up for Eir, and it is a Gb cable going to my house, would I actually get Gb speeds, or would I be capped at 7Mb?

Just to bump this post. Would I have anything to lose, by signing up to broadband. Seeing what speed I get. And if it is really slow, cancelling within the 14 day cooling off period?

GB speeds - currently 1000 MBits max AFAIK - are only happening with optic fibre cable. Fibre to the home 'ftth' is its marketed name.

Which unless you moved in within the last 2 or 3 years you'd know about its installation. It would be a brand new cable coming into your house attached to its own little box. There would have been an installation date and a technician coming into your house to do this. Unless you're renting it is also very unlikely this would have happened without you requesting it and signing up to a broadband contract. So by the sound of it its unlikely you have this.

This new cable would be separate from your phone line/box which can support up to about 100 Mbits but not GB speeds. Broadband based on your phone line is called DSL or fibre to the cabinet 'fttc' and it sounds this is what you have and its actual speed can vary a lot depending on your distance to the cabinet.

Did he actually say you have this 'GB speeds' cable or did he say you could get this cable?

I believe he said my house is wired for it. Now, that being said. As far as I'm aware there's no actual Eir cable coming into my house. Just Virgin. So I'm also not quite sure what installation would entail.

If you have Virgin, like as in Virgin cable tv, that may be it. I suggest to call Virgin to clarify. They may be able to give you GB speeds just like that.

I actually have Eir fibre broadband, but if do an availability check on the OpenEir site or on other providers sites, it says fibre isn't available at my address. I've raised it with OpenEir and with Eir, but with no success so far. So basically i'm stuck with Eir even with the price rise coming next month.

Surely you could change provider whether fibre is available or not? I assume you have DSL.

I can change provider, but I can't get fibre from anyone else as their records don't show me as having fibre available

If we're talking FTTC or FTTH availability - basically the stuff that is based on or successor to the old Eircom infrastructure - those records are at network level not a provider level afaik. If the network guys say you cant have FTTH currently then you cant have it no matter what provider cos the infrastructure isnt in place. You may be able to get something from SIRO or Virgin or so, they may be outside of that as they seem to have their own infrastructure but I'm not 100% on that.

Try the Comreg broadband checker https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker/ it will tell you what wholesale networks are available at your address and the max speeds

Can you find the wire going into your house?

If it's fiber it will say so on the cable sheath.

While there may be fiber outside it doesn't necessarily mean you're home is connected to it.

Thanks, but i do have fibre broadband from Eir at the moment (and it definitely is fibre), its just that for some reason the OpenEir records still show that it isnt available at my address.

Thanks for that….that one does say i have fibre available, but if I go onto Vodafone/Sky sites they aren't offering me fibre so not sure where their availibility checker looks.

Possibly a database error that they're not acting on.

The error is preventing you choosing another retailer provider, anti-competitive by failing to sort the error.

    Contact Comreg.
