Spoke to the esb before about the charger at kimmage power sharing. He was adamant they are 150 on both sides and are definitely not shared.

I don't think he was telling the truth.

Could it be that they are 400v only and do not support 800v charging?

Not sure which charger type is at Kimmage, but the link below is the standard High Power charger that ESB use. There should be a little panel on the back showing similar, but look at the link to see specs. Charger can output a max total of 200kW. It doesnt clarify how it can break it down between conectors.

However peak power seems to be lower at 400v with current being the limiting factor. By my sums 400v max is 160kW. Max at 800v is 200kW. Limitation at 400v seems to be the cable.

If the kimmage one is the one at the supervalu carpark I've charged there before and the HPC is not performing at full speed even when only one car is connected.

Max current would be 500A under CCS2 protocol, however the amp limit on those chargers are typically 350A. (A 500A capable charger would typically be branded as 350kW). No impact on 800V rating (800v * 350A is 280kW) however on 400V it limits to 140kW peak power.

Now, why did I write that? Well.. I dont like coincidences, and 140kW split to two sides is 70kW, or approx what the car in the photo is getting. Sometimes the ESB power split chargers are done crudely. I think that is what has been done at kimmage and why I also found it slow (model 3 and Ora, both 400v)

I'm just exploring the Plugshare app a bit as an EV newbie, trying to see what it'll suggest for charging locations for a long trip down the M1 and M7. I know that the Mayfield charging hub at J14 has multiple ESB chargers (12, I think?), most of which are rated for 200kW or higher. It's a little over 220km away from where I am in Co. Antrim, so would seem to be the ideal spot to stop and charge on my way to Limerick city in a 64kWh eNiro - cruising at 110-115kmh, the battery should be approaching or even dipping below 20% by the time I get there, and I reckon I'll want to add 40-50% which should make the best use of the charging curve (i.e. speeds of about 70kW up to 72%) and get me where I'm going without any issues.

But Mayfield won't show up in the Plugshare app unless I set it to include chargers providing under 50kW speeds, i.e. set the kilowatt range to go from zero. I've tried being very specific with the filters (6+ stations, CCS1 and/or CCS2 plugs, additional amenities like restrooms/dining) and also tried checking as few filters as possible, so set the vehicle as a Kia eNiro 2019, selected fast chargers and nothing else. All the same, Mayfield still only shows up if I set the kW range from zero. I don't think it's because I'm based in NI, as ESB have loads of chargers on this side of the border. Is there something else I've missed, or is this a known quirk of the Plugshare app?

Based on an article and my own observed behaviour the total power on UFC 200's can only be split equally, I'd assume there are only two AC/DC modules. The 200kW charger is really 2x100kW chargers in one unit, that can be paired together if only 1 car is connected.

I've had the same in the model 3. Even on my own without sharing I've struggled to reach 80kw.

Posting because I can't see any new posts

Realised we'd got another stuck thread, welcome to eCars 2 :D

Probably ecars specced the cheaper one that didn't offer the combination if only 1 side is in use.

They were a bulk purchase via e-tenders, haven't charged at the Kimmage one since getting the Y but have at Knocklyon with the same setup. Peak power was 142kW at 33% which is where I started. I've also seen >100kW at Portlaoise and Carrickmines.

Known quirk of Plugshare. The charger units on Mayfield (and plenty of other sites) don't have a speed listed. So the filter/Plugshare doesn't know what speed they are, so can't show you them as they're not captured in any filter, from 1kw or above.

Doesn't appear to be any way for the average user to edit the speeds either.

Best bet is to just filter by CCS and check a station individually if it fits your route.

I know a couple of the Ionity ones used to be the same as they were entered without a speed (eg the one in the South-East, since been fixed).

Ah, ok - just one of those things you don't know about until you encounter it! Thanks for the explanation.

Hi all, arrived at an ESB charger today at Kildare Village (Tesco) only to find I need to have my own cables

I looked at the app and don't see any easy filter to only show chargers with a cable. I have a cable but just didnt bring it on the trip.

    Am I missing something.

Got sorted in the end with the new chargers in the village (with the tiniest parking spaces)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭dsandson

Thats not an ESB specific thing. Basic rule of thumb is that a public AC charger (Type 2 socket) needs you to bring your cable.

A DC charger uses CCS and due to the high power delivery has its own cable on the charger.

On a related note I would always have the AC charge cable in the car. You never know when you may need it. I understand that when you have an untethered charger at home then it's tempting to just leave it there. Your call though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 909 ✭✭✭MICKEYG

Thanks. I have a tethered at home. The portable cable is heavy and awkward. I will know in future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,731 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Rule of thumb: Anything less than 50kW (usually 11kW) is AC and needs the type 2 cable. Anything 50kW or more is DC and has its own cable.

While I like Plugshare I wouldn't rely on it due to the poor filtering and generally spotty data. Also the amount of sites people have inserted that are planned but haven't broken ground yet.

They need to make the charger info more reliable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,792 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

You can filter out the planned sites in the menu to only show active sites

Next time at Kildare Village go to the Chargepoint ones. They are tethered but you'll need a chargepoint account

It's still a nonsense though. The filters don't work 100% correctly and it's confusing for people.

A lot of those planned sites have been planned for years. No progress at all on them.

I want to filter on working chargers (recent check-ins) of a certain type AC/DC and often you can't do that reliably. So you end up having to check multiple apps.

I've switched to mostly using ABRP for trip planning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,189 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Plugshare doesn't say what chargers they are ABRP does. Though ABRP doesn't show how any are in use but does with the other suppliers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭innrain

I didn't say anything about plugshare just pointed the location. Open the link and check the pictures. Outdoors ones are better spaced.

Just pointing out the limitations of Plugshare.

Planning permission sought for new chargers just opposite the existing hub in Carrickmines

The existing ones must be getting a lot of use if they think they need another six. Any time I've been there, the worst I've seen is half full.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,109 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I'm there a fair bit and there's always a queue. Really awkward as theres no area to properly queue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,189 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I'm a bit curious who uses the carrickmines hub a lot. It's it locals or people travelling a distance. You'd think people travelling would have better options before hitting carrickmines. Locals would have mostly home charging. But this location seems super busy.

We're not locals but if taking the Ora to dublin, we often combine charging with either stopping for retail items at carrickmines, or simply krispy kreme there.
