Neither part of the squad. 18 man squad with 3 keepers.

That's just tremendous news. Are we down to 14 fit outfield players then?

That's not good, as I'd be targeting the Europa League if I were Amorim. What's the Champions League revenue worth? 20m? Not to mention the type of player that Champions League football could draw.

I get the distinct impression that on current form, it wouldn't matter either way.

One the flip side, it's no harm in a way. We could throw a few young lads in, give them a taste of senior action. This season is a bust, and recent results mean we're not getting relegated, so lets use the rest of the season to blood a few youngsters, and rest some of the more "tried and trusted", give them more a break and let them recover physically, and start fresher in the summer.

Yes, getting up the league helps with the prize money, but a refreshed squad with young players that have game experience under them wouldn't be the worst thing for Amorim to have in the summer if he's trying to turn things around.

I make this the squad (in temrs of who might be available)
    Onana
    Lindelof
    Mazraoui
    Le Ligt
    Yoro
    Heaven
    Dorgu
    Dalot
    Bruno
    Case
    Eriksen
    Collyer
    Fletcher
    Hojlund
    Zirkzee
    Garnacho

    Heaten - Injured
    Bayindir - Injured
    Mee - Injured
    Maguire - Injured
    Martinez - Injured
    Shaw - Injured
    Evans - Injured
    Mount - Injured
    Mainoo - Injured
    Ugarte - Injured
    Amad - Injured
    Obi - Not registered.

Included Amass and Fletcher as they are on the A list, despite not having played.
Will be interesting to see if we give Fletcher minutes because we specifically included him on the A list over Obi (or Kone?)

A few other young lads were in the training squad today so they might travel over to sit on the bench.

Didn't realise the travel squad was alreayd known.

Why the hell did we name Fletcher in the euro A list when he isn't considered ready to even sit on the bench where we can't even name a full match day squad?

Depressing enough watching PSG and seeing how good the lads we were linked with are. Kvara and Mendes.

Even our ex goalkeepers are making clangers in the champions league.

That's weird half my message seemed to disappear.

Kovac from Bayer Leverkusen I hadn't realized he was starting for them these days, he looked good in preseason for us a couple of years back.

Tough watching the champions League these days. Really depressing what the Glazers have done to the club.

Mainoo's current contract runs until 2027, with the club having the option to extend another year? So that'd be effectively 2028.

He's on £20k/week. The club hold most of the cards in this situation. Mainoo can't really sit on £20k/week for the next 3 years when he's been offered £100-120k. I'm surprised this hasn't been sorted yet, he's lost a lot of earning potential by not signing a new deal 6 months ago.

This season really can't end fast enough. These players know the club will listen to offers for every player and they don't care; that's if they ever did. I don't expect any improvement at all this season. Hopefully we get rid of some of the deadwood, get players in who can play the system the manager wants and push on from there. Realistically we need to see improvement year on year so if that means next season we target a top half finish so be it; that's where are are as a club after a decade of shambolic leadership.

Considering what we've spent on the squad over the past 2 summers that is one depressing looking list of players.

When emery took over at the villa, Gerrard had them in 17th place, in 2 years they are in with a great chance of CL quarter final, in the squad last night, there were10 players that Gerrard had at his disposal.

Although league form especially GD isn't great this year they still have a shout of euro football and are still alive in both cups.

I think amiron is getting a massive pass from majority of utd supporters, excuses been banded out left right and centre, players can't fit the system, not good enough for the system etc

emery has had massive injury headaches this season and last and while not always getting it right, gets on with it. He's as good a coach as a manager.

Don't let it get you down. They would have been shite if they joined United.

So let's give RA the same amount of time and judge him then

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

here's a good vid. basically we do not have the players to play the way ruben wants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

the worry is that with knowing we can not replace the full squad, can we get enouigh players in that can play it - that the players remaining from the current side can perform well enough at it to get the improvement we need.

It is possibly that with better or more comfortable players around them players under performing at the moment will improve in the same system - or that they themselves are being compromised by 'worse' players around them.

    Its a worry though.

Inter play the same formation as us but look at the squad, it's miles better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,441 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Is that the Inter Milan squad littered with United cast offs and those deemed not good enough for us like Darmian, Mkhitaryan, Arnautavic and Taremi?

They've moved on Young and Sanchez recently enough

One of the main issues at United is that we pay players too much and average players way too much. This is almost exclusively on Woodward and the Glazers.

Contract negotiations used to be really difficult for even our absolute superstar generational players like Keane and Ferdinand before the Glazers came along and then it was Martial, Jones, Shaw how much do you want?

The damage this has done is massive. Previously you (average players) accepted possibly less than market value to play for United. All the other big clubs trade off this filling their squads with guys on less than they could possibly get elsewhere.

We are the opposite, nearly every player in the squad is getting the absolute max they could get anywhere else while playing for United. This makes squad turnover extremely expensive and slow.

Look at Italian teams they often turnover almost a whole squad in a summer.

I don't believe we don't fundamentally have the players to play any particular system. Professional players should be able to play any system and as Amorim keeps saying it's not so much the system, it's the style of play.

But we have a bunch of players who's attitude is lackadaisical….they get paid extortionately regardless of doing what they are told or not…many of them won't be able to snap out of it as they are kind of institutionalized, so in that sense we will need a load of new players but it will cost alot of money we may or may not have. While I say it will cost alot, I think the cost should mostly be on getting rid. We should be buying younger, cheaper players on modest contracts for some semblance of a fresh start.

It's ultimately all on the club….I believe it dates back to the release that was felt when SAF took his thumb off the squad when he retired. The strict teacher was gone, the kids partied, reigning champions finshed 6th or 7th was it?….Ed Woodward started dishing out the big dough for the big stars to save the day, Managers came and went and there were false dawns but ultimately that ruthlessness, that accuracy wasn't there and the party carried on……. to this day.

And we are where we are.
