Canada not the 51st State eh. We're above the states, the big land mass that the rest of the world hates!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,937 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

I never said Trump was going to invade Canada, he said that. And yes, Canada will give america a bloody nose, as they have done already when Trump backed down from his initial threat of tariffs, and his new stance that he might already lift them.

You’ve made my point above by glorifying the reception of his speech, as if it is some sort of win. Anything to say about what he actually said during it? Or how he is holding back intelligence from Ukraine?

Take your time if you have to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,631 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

You were alarmed that Trump was going to invade Canada, and also Greenland and Panama.

I argued with you that it was just bluster.

I didn't glorify the reception of his speech, I merely said it was seemingly well recieved by showing a poll result.

I didn't listen to his speech, I have no intention of listening to a 100 minute speech by anyone, especially a poor speaker like Trump.

Anyway I think we are done here.

Bluster? He repeated his intent during his speech last night about Greenland, what planet are you on? It’s a very real intent and those involved are taking it as seriously as it is. You’re again, trying to undermine it by saying it’s a joke, it’s not.

You’re running off now because you’ve been called out, again. Have a good day.

You seriously think he will invade Greenland ?

It is a concept called “anchoring.” He says something outrageous at the outset of a negotiation but when it actually comes to the sit down the opposing party is going to consider anything less than that to be a win.

In Greenland he likely wants two or three American military bases. His anchoring ploy states he wants to buy the whole of Greenland or take it over, but the Danes will give him his real goal, the bases and the Danes will think they have won.

    The Art of the deal.

He also uses these outlandish claims as a deflection so people will ignore the change from “I will stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours” to “I will stop the war in Ukraine within 6 months “.

He is sowing outrage in liberal media, which has almost always paid dividends for him. After 10 years of his political career, I cant believe people still fall for it.

'Invade' is an alarmist term but Trump's intention to 'acquire' Greenland one way or another seems genuine to me…

"nobody has ever heard of" Lesotho.

I bet that Musk has heard of it because South Africa surrounds the country and Musk lived and was educated in SA until he decided to dodge the draft and move to the Canada.

Who else dodged the draft?…would it be his pal Donald perhaps?

They both also decided to withdraw HIV support for SA.

They both also decided to allow Afrikaners to move to the US. Note, not all white South Africans just Afrikaners, who implemented the racist policies of Apartheid.

Looks like Musk is selling out his birth continent as well as the second country he moved to and is a citizen of.

    This is unbelievable.

All one has to do is read up about his grandfather who moved to SA and wrote several racist papers and supported the Apartheid government to understand where his mindset is. He was brought up as a racist.

This is pure conjecture pal, fairytale stuff that would be best placed in a novel.

For a start, Trump didn’t even write the Art of the Deal, I also doubt he even read it himself.

You are again defending him here by saying what he said wasn’t what he meant, how do you know that and the rest of us don‘t?

This isn’t some super clever strategy, this is Trump we are talking about, multiple bankruptcies, not very successful at business or diplomacy, no sense of humility or humour.

He isn’t very clever, we can all see that, except you.

"What he said isn't what he meant"

The usual nonsense to gaslight those who heard what he said because they have ears and brains.

I see the Supreme Court upheld the ruling that USAID must pay out its existing contracts, with none other than Amy Coney Barrett the deciding vote of all people.

The British are raging over JD Vance's comment.

He said a US stake in Ukraine's economy was a "better security guarantee than 20,000 troops from some random country that hasn't fought a war in 30 or 40 years".

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czx7w7q7qzro

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Given his alliance with Russia the strategic relevance of Greenland would be against Europe,it should be made clear by Germany etc to Denmark why there will be consequences to any deal with trump/Putin/musk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,838 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Not convinced thatwas aimed at the Brits, suspect it was just a random hypothetical. Surely Vance and anyone listening would be aware of Brit involvement in Afganistan & Iraq wars this century

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,037 ✭✭✭✭briany

What does Vance care if the British are angry? The events of the last couple of weeks are proving well enough that European countries like the UK will take insults on the chin and still come back to the US looking for support. As long as they need that support, all rage will be notably impotent.

You've also claimed his ethnic cleansing remarks were some kind of strategic play but they appear to be nothing of the sort. Equally what's the art of the deal in relation to Ukraine? Cause at the moment it appears to amount to intimidate the victims of the invasion and let the invaders get off scott free. Equally the Canadian tariffs are gonna end up punishing Americans so great job on that front.

There's an irony in the fact you're criticizing posters for statements they've made previously. Meanwhile your predictions have amounted to claiming we'll see positive benefits from his stupid policies but they'll arrive at some unspecified time. I'm sure if Trump said Russia weren't engaging in genocide, you'd be claiming it's some genius strategy or just outright agreeing.

He's basically destroying the US reputation globally and if Biden had pulled anything like it, you would have been absolutely outraged. Trump is behaving like the criminal he is and naturally the only allies he sees are the war criminals, that's what it amounts to.

I'd choose third world Ireland any day over the America he wants btw. 🙂

Since Trump has torn up its strategic alignment with Europe and UK would it not make sense for Europe to look elsewhere for a major partner? India or China perhaps. If Russia were to break-up the EU could take western Russia under its wing and asiatic Russia could go to China.

Howard Lutnick has been on Fox saying an ease on the Tariffs against Mexico and Canada is probably going to be announced tomorrow.

Has Trump lost the trade war in 24-hours?

Not that it would stop him from claiming victory and his supporters believing it like sheep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,877 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Trump is outrageous but let's see how the four years play out.

People losing their minds over Greenland comments. IF and it's a big fcuking IF he invaded, he won't be the first or last US president to invade another country.

Similar with Gaza, I mean Biden was supplying the missiles for the ethnic cleansing. Let's see what Trumps version actually results in. So far it's words Vs bombs.

I'm not defending Trump. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of people claiming he's this never before seen POTUS.

He might have a very different public delivery but in reality even if he follows through with his outlandish statements he'd still have plenty of company with other US Presidents.

Whan Rep Al Green was being removed from the chamber during the Trump State of the Union speech, the chants of "USA, USA" from the Republicans were pure Seig Heil stuff. To think that Green was expelled for lack of decorum 😎

The orange Russian agent is doing what Putin commands.

The only countries who have suggested sending troops to Ukraine are the UK and France.

If not those two countries who do you think he was talking about?

This will be his second loss against Canada since he started, 3rd of you count the hockey game as well :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 528 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

Sounds like he knows what impact the tariffs actually have and he'll mask this in a 'don't test me, I've proven that I'll do it' kinda way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,337 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

He mentioned '20,000 troops' though : that was the proposed figure for UK and French soldiers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,248 ✭✭✭✭iamwhoiam

Trump thinks he can play with the big boys . The same big boys ( Putin etc ) will let him play while they use him then gobble him up , chew him and spit him out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,631 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Lets place a wager on it so, I will give you good odds that Trump wont invade any of the 3 countries mentioned, Canada, Greenland and Panama.

Fairytale stuff you say, well if thats the case you should be almost certain to win the bet now shouldnt you, pal.

Billionaire, twice elected President of the USA, both times as the underdog. Time Man of the Year twice, not bad for an unclever man.

Trump is stupid like a fox.

For the next four years Trump is more powerful than Putin.

The NY Times did a a fact check on Trump's address to Congress

    Paywall -

    https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/03/05/us/trump-speech-congress

    Paywall removed -

But again, what difference does this make to the voters? It is mostly about the preception as far as they are concerned.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Hitler was Time's man of the year too.

I think Trump is actually a fair representation of a segment of US society who thinks their country's relative decline is a conspiracy against them.

Trump had a call with "Governor" Trudeau. Doesn't look like it went too well.
