Did the CS team tell you that the 2GB wasn't available to current NBI members? Seems a bit ridiculous that theres no communication and they don't know where to send people..

Friday, someone told me to apply as a new customer then I tried that and was told they never should have sent me that direction…

Back and forth with them, I will try once more and ask for Retention/Loyalty Level 2 people…

EDIT: Rang again, still same ole same ole - asked for Retention/Loyalty level 2 he seemed to think he was the man to deal with asked to be transferred to whoever can help me… Complete waste of time, I think it may have something to do with their systems having my address as County Dublin even though I am in Monaghan…

I'm not. There is a direct line for the loyalty team. I'll see if I can find it.

2GB is definitely available to NBI customers aswell.

As to your eircode issue, whatever system eir uses is badly out of whack. All of Carlow comes up as Co. Laois, parts of Kerry show as Co. Cork, towns in Kildare come up as Ballylinan Co. Laois! Wexford comes up as carlow etc etc. So i dont think it's anything líne that

I just upgraded today from Vodafone 1gig (not NBI). I am surprised and shocked, on how good the support was. I am up and running already. I am still running my old FritzBox, so can't comment on download, but I am getting 200 meg upload straight away.

    Hi all,

Apologies for the naive question but as an Eir part fibre customer on 100Mbps product, upgrading to a full fibre 500Mbps one, do I get a new Wifi7 router? I've seen no mention of it yet.

    Thanks,

    Paul

I've 1GB fibre on the old openeir gpon network and my home is also "ready to connect" for NBI. I rang eir twice and they said they can't offer me faster than 1GB on NBI.

Eir Webchat said that 2GB isn't showing for me on their NBI either.

I'd buy it from eir they'd sell it to me. €49 is so much cheaper than any others and the wifi 7 repeater makes it even better value.

I upgraded too and I'm shocked to report their customer service was .. extremely good. The line speed update seemed to happen basically immediately as the upload speed had gone up to about 204mbit/s after the call, and obviously - I can't comment on the download speed just yet, but we'll see later on today I assume.

Overall, have to say they're a breeze to deal with these days. I think we're very much getting the reformed Iliad incarnation of Eir at this stage. It'll take them a while though to shake off the reputation their predecessors gained, but all in all finding them very good.

From at technical point of view, finding their services top notch and no-nonsense both with FTTH and mobile stuff. Only service they're really missing at the moment is eSIMs, which would be quite handy for 2nd lines on mobiles and Apple Watch etc.

Well just of my experience, my mother few years back was with Eir, i did setup her connection and my name was on account as authorized contact - again place by myself. So when she wanted to cancel during price rise, again i was the one who rung them and cancelled. Guess what, line wasn't cancelled and they had no record of the call asking to cancel, also they did not had record of me being authorized on account either and they refused to talk to me without my mother. After back and forward got myself back on the account and they transferred my cal to the next team who will deal with this issue, guess what - next team again tells me i am not authorized contact. This company is a joke. After all this they told me line wasn't cancelled and we have to pay, went to COMREG and they sorted an issue. With all this is mind my mother is on disability after several heart attacks and she was stressing out, i did mention this to Eir but this didn't stop them not even inch until comreg stepped in. This wasn't my first encounter with their shambles operations, in one occasion they didn't cancel DD after service that was never connected at all and we asked them to cancel contract, they still took money and after i spent 1h on the phone waiting they promised to refund, guess what, never happened.

I'm fairly sure NBI has 2Gb fibre offerings from Eir however the rural Eir Network doesn't and probably won't have for years to come unless OpenEir eventually upgrade the network.

It's not quite as clear cut as 'rural' vs 'urban' either, even if that's being used as shorthand. They began the FTTH rollout initially using GPON and the first areas to get FTTH were mostly rural, as those were the areas that were really struggling to get any kind of broadband over DSL technologies due to having very long lines / low densities, so were high priority for FTTH, thus have the oldest OLTs (Optical Line Terminals) in the their 'exchanges'.

The urban areas came later, and got what was XGS-PON which had become available by then and is capable of higher speeds. It's just a matter of swapping out the OLT in the local exchange / nodes, not rewiring the entire area or anything like that. They are fully backwards compatible and can even be overlaid on top of each other on the same fibre. The optical splitters etc are all the same. So, if it were upgraded they'd just swap it out and then if you wanted to get faster speeds, you'd need an ONT swap.

I'm pretty sure GPON can however support up to slightly more than 2Gbit/s - it's more limited, but it's not limited to just 1Gbit/s.

Siro uses Huawai XGS-PON and NBI uses Nokia's equivalent.

Ultimately all of these techs get surpassed quite quickly by something newer. The handy thing about FTTH is the PON (Passive Optical Network) aspect i.e. the wiring, remains the same and that's the expensive bit!

Nokia has said their equipment is software upgradeable to 25 Gbps when required.

That "Box 7" router is fairly decent, getting very high speeds on WiFi 6E devices now too.

Also seems, like FritzBox to support DECT cordless phones if you have one you can just skip the need for a base station e.g. with most of the Gigaset devices.

Edit: it technically does, but the features are not configurable… maybe they're planning to launch their own handsets or something…

What channel width are they using on 6 GHz? Hopefully not 320!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,613 ✭✭✭✭guil

Mine is set to auto and on channel 5

Got my router today but no mesh extender, rang them up and they said they could be coming from different warehouses so wait for a few more days. Wifi is pretty decent on the new router. Pc on the old router was getting around 250mb and on the new router is getting 900mb-1.2gb

Router arrived today, not too bad :)

I think I'm getting a little overhead - one of the TV boxes may have been running, but not bad

Had anyone had a chance to play with the new android app? Kids in the house these days are exclusively streaming on Netflix or Disney but we're still locked in to Sky for a short while longer so would probably suit the adults in the house.

Yeah it's easy for OpenEir to upgrade the GPON network as all the network is in place but are OpenEir going to actually do it at some point or just leave things be. Eir have an advert online for their new 2gb service and I asked when is the rural Gpon network likely to be upgraded and I've heard no response.

I'm on the Gpon network and would love to get the 2Gb plan mainly for the doubling of upload speed which would make a huge difference. 100 upload is the fastest we can get on the Gpon Network unless you go leased line for higher upload speeds but no normal household could afford to get a leased line for higher upload speeds.

to my knowledge open eir is upgrading to offer up to 5gb across the network.

I’m finding the range bad on the new box and the mesh extender useless, the old box gave more signal with no mesh.
I must be doing something wrong but have no idea what, it’s all set up correctly and in the same place as the old one.

I had to turn off enhanced mode as the Xbox xs wouldn’t connect to it.
    Any ideas?

what likely to be the max in the short medium term here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,367 ✭✭✭Raichų

    10gbps I’d say.
new fibre box arriving today 🙏

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

    When did you order?

We got instal date for 3 weeks but I don't know what's to install as we have fibre that Sky installed, don't they use the same hardware and infrastructure at the home?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,367 ✭✭✭Raichų

Current customer upgraded on Tuesday and equipment delivering today (Thursday).

I had the line upgraded within an hour of phoning in though and had I a capable modem handy could’ve used speed immediately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,367 ✭✭✭Raichų

It’s prob Siro you have btw hence the install.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

Possibly, but I didn't think so. I'm in Dublin and Eir's switch box is at the end of our garden.
