I’ve used practically no grid at all the past few days

But is the Solis inverter drawing power from the grid all the time despite the batteries being full and Solar available?

See my Monday chart from the ESB

At no point would the batteries have fallen below about 40%

Why can’t it take its juice from the panels or batteries? Or is this a draw to check the power is on and quite normal

I know this is tiny but I don’t want to be using any grid when using no grid is possible

That must be a setting. I have a solis 6kW hybrid inverter and it doesn't draw from the grid that much. Only when not receiving any solar at all (as it is slow to react to demand change from battery alone)

    Thanks

Solar production is incredible today and it’s not even fully sunny

13.536 kw out of the panels now at noon ,max is 14.820kw

My Solis will always draw something while the battery is charging it seems, now it might only be 0.02kW or something, but its never 0 until the battery is charged, regardless of solar output.

Meanwhile, 19kWk the each of the last 2 days, 11kWh so far today

    7.2kWp in south dublin.

Cracking day here today with just over 46 kwh generated today. Rest of week looks promising too

New daily record here since the install in October. 21kWhs on 4.4kWp

off the charts here also today

2 things are coming into their own now

Evenings and overnight are totally on Battery a lot lately and there’s plenty solar power during the day to power up some storage heaters \0/ for evening heat

That's 0.5 of a kWh....what are you worried about...there might have a 15 minute spell during the day where you had the kettle on the oven etc and it drew half a kWh from the grid because you went over the power limit of the battery/inverter. What are the numbers for the rest of the week

6.1kWp south facing, South of Cork City

+1 on what ECO mentions, however, the more likely reason is that there is a delay of usually 10-20 seconds from when a load comes on to when the inverter can pick up the load from the battery. The delay depends on the inverter model, my Givenergy can be as much as 30 seconds, although the specs say 10-15 seconds. During this time any additional load like ECO mentions a kettle will be pulled from the grid.

Was gonna say the same bullit. I think! AC power is travelling back and forth in the mains supply and our house wiring 50 times per second. Difficult for an inverter to react instantly.

My inverter uses WiFi and I can't get usage below 1kWh per day as I think the WiFi is slower than a wired connection. I also don't give a fork because 1kWh is almost nothing.

    usage Monday was 0.5kwh

It’s also a failsafe the usage if your inverter is not in island mode,it has to know there’s grid power lest you electrocute lines men

I think in that case, the inverter is measuring voltage, not power.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,879 ✭✭✭pureza

Well it’s taking some grid to ensure the grid is on isn’t it so it can shut down supply if the grid goes off isn’t it

Some inverters just run at a slight import when on batteries.

But it's not for grid detection, that's done by other means, voltage, frequency

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 588 ✭✭✭JohnySwan

No, it's not. It doesn't use power to ensure "the grid is on".

Just got the inverter and electric done yesterday so today was the first full day of production. 25.1kwh on a south facing 4.4kw system. Well chuffed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 525 ✭✭✭discostu1

A lovely day in Cork city, 31 kwh generated on 5.5 kwp South facing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭chalky024

40.8 kWh generated from 8.9kWp south facing system in East Cork. Could possibly have been more but my batteries were full from 09.30 to 17.15 and I assume my generation was being clipped. If days like today continue on a fairly regular basis I might not charge the batteries to capacity overnight on the EV rate.
