The US needs a civil war to reset itself into normality. It's too fractured at the minute.

No-one, apart from those who actually watch women's football, would remember who won the last WC only for the 'kiss'. Most publicity the game ever got.

People who prioritise going to watch and enjoy the football and support the team are normal football fans.

Not those who get off wanting see every match turn into an event for this cause / that cause.

The vibe I get from the clubs social media and that of many of their so called ‘hardcore ’ wokie supporters is that a lot of these political / social issues or however they are to be labelled are of more importance or equal importance to / than the results on the pitch. Not good enough. Almost as if to them a win and three points would be a bonus to all the rest of the crap.

Look, the club in the last 15 years won zero league championships…and 3 cup competitions only 1 of which was the FAI Cup. One other was a league cup and the other that Setanta thing that didn’t take off.

Good initiatives need to lead to the team being successful, nothing else. That should be the priority. Really isn’t at Bohs. No ruthlessness or winning mentality at all.

Fans being loyal ? The club needs to remain loyal to its supporters and ideals that bring the team success. Has to work both ways.

Civil wars don't bring factions together; there is still bad blood in certain parts of America over the last one. You need an external force attacking to unite people.

Quite similar to no one, apart from those who actually watch men's soccer, would remember who won the last World Cup.

I think people who would watch quite a few sports would have some idea who won the mens World Cup. Despite what the media try to force feed very very few actual are anyway interested in womens soccer.

The so-called 'anti-woke' are the most perpetually offended moanbags you will ever come across, and will tell others that it's actually the 'wokists' who get offended by everything.

Governments love smokers because they pay a huge amount of tax on their cigarettes over their lifetime and a lot of them will die before or soon after retiring which means the government saves money by not paying out a pension to them.

Coming home from work yesterday evening, I noticed a house on my route had erected a flag pole with a lovely new tricolour on it.

While there are causes worthy to support, it was just nice to see instead of another bloody Palestine flag.

Hopefully it's up there for March 17th and not the home of someone with "certain opinions". They love waving and wrapping themselves in the national flag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,771 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Ah come on, anyone erecting a flag pole in their own garden is a raving lunatic, I don't care what their political outlook is.

….that does seem to be the case for many of these folks!

I think both groups are just as bad as each other.

Anyway, my controversial opinion is that I can’t understand how David Gray’s White Ladder album got so popular here. I find it really bland, middle of the road whiney music. The songs are still embedded in my head 25 years later because the singles from the album were played to death so much, they were inescapable.

We need to start undergrounding electrical cables as a matter of course. The detractors always poo poo the idea on the grounds of cost. Look how much has been spent in the wake of Eowyn, now imagine that happening once or twice a year for the forseeable future and then come back to me and talk about the cost. That is leaving aside the amount of disruption to infastructure, power cuts etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,967 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

….best of luck with encouraging infrastructural changes in this country, of course it makes sense, but….

    Agree.

I'm genuinely not into the whole flag waving thing, but if you're going to wave a flag, wave your own.

On a related note, it's nice to see a few GAA flags starting to pop up. The GAA might not be everyone's cup of tea, and might be hated by plenty (the rare justified reason included), but it's undeniable that at it's core it's about supporting your own locality. There's no harm in having a bit of a visual display of local pride once in a while, whatever the source.

We should do it more, even if it annoys some people.

Interesting theory but do the facts bear it out?

My mother's aunt smoked heavily all of her life (and continued to smoke when when she was on oxygen. Nicotine is a hell of a drug)

Died in her mid-70s, not too shabby you might think?

BUT for nearly 20 years before she died, she was under constant medical treatment (and had a shít quality of life). 2-3 hospital inpatient admissions every winter, outpatient appointments through the wazoo, not to mention the GP. Oxygen fitted in her home at taxpayer expense

So no, I don't think the state made a profit out of her cigarette taxes.

If the rural dwellers really want this massively expensive and unneccessary option, let them pay for it in full themselves.

….not how reality works, maybe farmers should be taxing our foods more, as the majority is probably eaten by urbanites such as ourselves!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Iscreamkone

If you want to live in the back arse of nowhere, where you can buy, insure and tax a property for half nothing, please don’t complain that you don’t have the same quality of services that you would have if you paid top dollar buying a property in a city or large town.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,967 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

…higher taxes on food it is then, plus other charges, tis all good!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Iscreamkone

Farmers should charge whatever they like for their produce. If you don’t like the price go without, or buy somewhere cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,967 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

…higher unemployment it is so, wonder who would pay for that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Iscreamkone

There is no unemployment at the moment. If you haven’t got a job now it’s because you don’t want one.
Where is your “higher unemployment “ going to come from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,967 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

….if sectors such as agriculture and food production are badly disrupted, this could lead to rising unemployment from these sectors, many of these sectors would in fact be based in rural settings, amongst others of course, including service sectors, tourism etc. all sectors are intricately linked, i.e. a negative impact tends to also negatively impact those adjacent to those sectors, so be careful what you wish for!

if major job-losses are experienced, moving to alternative sectors can be difficult, due to many reasons, debt obligations, i.e. existing mortgages and other debts, both personal and business debts, other life obligations, kids, etc etc, lack of skills, none transferable skills etc etc i.e. just upping sticks isnt actually straight forward in life for most!

there is always a base level of unemployment, but thankfully it is currently very low, but again, this can rapidly change, with little notice, keep an eye on those trade wars! things can change quickly!

Some people can't order their lunch from a deli without constantly shuffling around or looking side to side. It's as if the experience makes them uneasy.

    Relax, it's not a test. You're ordering a sandwich.
