Nice move from Zelenskyy, what will Trump say now? Whine about needing a personal apology? Repeat Russian propaganda?

I can't see the Russians going for it. UKR is much weakened without US support so the obvious time for Russia to press UKR is now.

If VZ had agreed to a truce while he had US backing then it would be different. Or if this gets the US back into the fold it would also be different.

The question is if the US just wants out to focus elsewhere or it's opting out due to vindictiveness.

A test perhaps. Will Donald Putin agree to it?

Of course he didn't apologise. He didn't do anything wrong

I was talking with the chap in charge of tank production in the US a couple weeks ago. Lima is running flat out filling M1 orders for four customers. Only one (Poland) is European.

There are a number of reasons why the US is one of the dominant weapons manufacturers in the world. Europe can fill a lot of the gap on its own, but if you look at the proportion of M1s or Patriots or F-16s etc built in the world, and then compare with how many are in European service (and then factor in things like UK-built Apaches or Belgian-built F-16s), the loss of orders would be noticed but would not be catastrophic. And that's only for things which Europe is capable of building itself. Face it, European attempts at attack helicopters or modern fighters have not been as successful as their American counterparts.

He apologised the very next day.

And for the record I didnt feel he should have either. But obviously what happened in the press conference was the result of what was arrived at behind closed doors before that. You could see how he played along hands wringing gritted teeth. He knew.

In any case it's a clear sign of how far up sh1t creek Ukraine is.

And Zelensky himself. He reminds me of your man in Ozarks. Managing/stumbling from one catastrophe into an even worse one the next day, any of which could be very bad for him personally.

Yes, I personally think he's caught personally. He knows it's bad and he knows he wont get Russia out of territories and he knows dragging it out will make the military position worse and worse. Thats not even counting US suspending support. Maybe he can wiggle something joined/interim for some mainland territories but Crimea no way. And NATO membership he can completely forget about. They will have to step off their maximum position. There is not going to be a victory, only survival.

But I dont think he is allowed to acknowledge that. I dont want to get into CTs but he's obviously not solely in charge. Nobody ever is in any government/country and I would wager whoever other people hold power bands behind his front they may not all be the most savoury kind.

I don't think its that hard to see how the Dems can regain the white house in 2028 (maybe even congress in 2026) if they get their act together and agree on a decent candidate (depending also on who the Rep candidate is too). These tariffs are gonna bite, inflation gonna get worse, a probable significant rise in unemployment (not least due to DOGE job cuts), a definite significant rise in poverty, potential issues with processing times, healthcare issues/costs, cyber security etc. Someone will eventually highlight that the numbers around deportations and the Mexico border crossings is all just bluster and how tax cuts aren't benefiting the bulk. US voters won't care about it as much but if hostilities in Eastern Europe and/or the Middle East become more widespread, it will be another issue.

I wouldn't mistake Trumps loud supporters as being the majority of people - They're just the loudest cohort - for now!

I think Zelensky has to bite the bullet on this one. Yes it has the appearance of "grovelling" etc but the world is wise to how he's been treated by Trump partially for personal vendetta reasons.

Ukraine needs some form of guarantee and that can be worked on after the initial implied guarantee is accepted.

The Trump administration argument that signing the deal gives the US economic interests and more of a stake in Ukraine that it will want to protect in it's own interest is actually a fair point in my opinion.

Just a pity the delivery of that point has been juvenile.

100 million is a fair chunk of change to be throwing over to Ukraine.

Billions not millions and a fair amount of this is liable to go missing. Already has by the sound of it. With that amount of money it always does. It attracts parasites like a fresh dump attracts flies both on the giving and receiving end. They flew cargo planes full of cash into Iraq and nobody knows where any of it is. It certainly didnt go into rebuilding of Iraq look at the place.

    Until this happens again.

Ukraine says Chevron plans to pull out of $10 bln shale gas deal | Reuters

RUSA have promised nothing in terms of either security or an actual halt in aggression.

I also find it hilarious that Trump loves stating that Russia never invaded during his watch. They're currently still invading Ukraine. Furthermore halting aid = more Russian aggression so in fact he's stoking further conflict. Yet no one is pointing it out to him lest they denied access to his wonderful press briefings.

3.4$ trillion dollars got burned lately by Trump on US S&P stock market alone

I'd imagine the Saudis and Egyptians make up a fair bit of the demand book, but with Egypt already a massive recipient of US aid ist that business simply an extension of US domestic demand?

The Saudis obviously pay with oil.

It was never true. The Battle of Avdiivka happened 9 days into Trump's first presidency!

Note the "if Russia does the same" bit. Does anyone actually believe Russia will stop hitting civilian targets?

Le Pen openly condemns Trump's treatment of zelensky.

Maroni who was also once a Trump fan also showed up for the coalition of the willing in person.

Yes, thanks. Another a good reason to post an article from the time. Notice anything similar in the rhetoric? "Lift sanctions, praised Putin etc.".

And Scholz etc. You have to go all in to get the advantage. A war can turn on a dime as they say.

It may only be an outside chance at this stage that Trump will turn the weapons spigot back on but whatever it is Zelensky has to pursue it to the last, even to the point of abasing himself before Trump, given how vital American arms are to Ukraine. Even if the support is not to the same extent Biden was providing, half a loaf is better than no bread.

Well for military aircraft and major parts there are Dassault, Saab, Airbus, Augusta Westland, Safran, BAE systems, Rolls Royce.

For infantry weapons there are FN Browning, H&K, Steyr, Beretta for starters.

How many people know that little old once neutral Sweden was the 13th largest arms exporter?

I have to wonder has Trump and his buddies invested in European defense stocks?

    Yeah I am cynical.

Word is because Zelensky didn’t apologize nothing will change.

That military aid is as good as gone forever no matter what Zelensky says it does now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,332 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

Yes ,he is just pig ignorant and obnoxious. Probably thinks he is "telling it like it is" like all these scumbags (who can dish it out but never take it).

Didn't he make that nasty "cat lady" comment before the US election or something as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,636 ✭✭✭nachouser

Class act that he is, Trump will probably demand access to 750bn worth of grift from Ukraine now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,060 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

A trailer, a boat with an unusual number of fuel tanks, and an EPIRB, wouldn't go amiss - presuming you don't have a helicopter handy.

This shyte is really being to p*** me off.

There is continous pressure on Zelensky that he has to agree to peace talks, that he has to ceasefire.

It is being played out ala Putin, that the whole issue is Ukraine.

The orange gimp in the white house even blamed Zelensky and Ukraine for the war.

This shyte would be akin to the Brits and French demanding the Polish prime minister agree to a ceasefire in 1939 and that it was them that started the war.

And please don't dare anyone of ilk of Trumpists claim that the Poles did start WWII when they attacked the German border radio station in the border town of Gleiwitz.

That has been debunked as a false flag operation.

    Actually speaking of WWII.

Has anyone noticed how Trump, much like a certain WWII leader, has surrounded himself with sycophantic yes men who are vying with each other for his favour.

Zelensky firmly with tongue in Trumps hole..."strong leadership"...

I think its all a waste of time now....
