To be honest, I think we've hit peak dysfunctional already and are beginning to right the ship. I seen some mad stat we've missed more big chances since RA came in than any other team. That, coupled with some of the individual rather than system errors we've seen and I think a few key reinforcements will significantly improve the teams results. We've basically played the entire season with no LB, a striker that can't score, a keeper that can't stop making errors, and a makeshift midfield. Until we start balancing the squad then the manager or system is completely immaterial IMO.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

    I didn't miss it.

But you might as well say "if we're going to bring Fergie out of retirement for next season, does that mean we need to bring back Mike Phelan?"

There is nothing to suggest that INEOS are having doubts over either the manager or the system. There are plenty of rumours worthy of speculation. That isn't even a rumour.

someone is free to start that convo re fergie and phelan if they want.

talking about the future of amorim is a legit convo as he is doing very very badly, and we have seen ineos are willing to pull the trigger when they want (ashworth).

and here is an article from 5 hours ago. can we discuss his future now?

Lewis Oldham is a nobody. I have more thanks on this site than he has followers on Xitter.

Tbf I could write any old article like that, if it came from Ornstein well then it's news worthy.

According to reports, Manchester United have already decided their ‘favourite’ replacement for Ruben Amorim as his ‘days are numbered’.

Does anyone actually believe this shite? It might as well begin 'According to reports we have invented'. Ignore everything that comes after it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

No, football365 is a load of rubbish but going back to the original post on it, the person was only saying it as a hypothetical and given the INEOS record with managers at Nice, how Ratcliffe wanted EtH gone in the summer and how quick he got rid of Ashworth, it’s not a crazy one to raise as a possibility for discussion. If people don’t want to discuss it, they don’t have to.

It’s no different to the many different players that get thrown out there in these “best XI” for next season posts - players we’re not even linked with. It’s all just for discussion of how things might look in the near future.

The test of INEOS and more so Wilcox and Berrada and Vivel is that the signings we make, and the manager they hire, should all be towards an end goal.

If we don[t thiink a signing is right for United long term, we shouldn;t be signing them just cause Amorim said he wants them.

No doubt there would be some players moved on if a new manager came in - but the majority of an assembled squad should have the traits we want in our players and be of use to any subsequent manager hired, because that manager would be bired with the same goals in mind.

If we about face after sacking Amorim that truly will be the biggest of failures.

Can't see them sacking Amorim when they poached his 2 months in to a football season, no pressure season, no training, players he has no idea about mentality and physically. They've laid it all in him and knew what they getting in to.

Amorim hasn't had a summer transfer window, learning the league on the spot, and most of all, the media that surrounds him. All foreign to the guy.

    I'm hoping he does well.

Don't think INEOS really care about fan perception as much because of the media slating Amorim will get from the British media. They'll back him, he's their guy, which shows in some player departures so far.

We really need to do well in Europa which will be hard with the injury list we have.

This season was a right off anyway for me when he came in with the timing. I've said before, id rather him come in at the time he did than in the summer. He'll have a way better picture now on what needs to be donewith the squad.

It doesn't help that INEOS are also making decisions that are not a fan favourite and he's the one that has to answer these questions.

He's head coach let's not forget, he's not the manager of the club.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.

Out of interest how much would it cost to sack him and his team?

Because even though I don't think that's anyway likely to happen before end of next season no matter what happens, I think the likely cost would be a big problem anyway

You would have to buy them out of their contracts. Probably North of 20 mil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

The talk before the summer was sacking EtH would cost 10m - when he would have had 1 year on his contract.
The talk having sacked him is that it cost 10m - when he would have had 1.75 years on his contract.

So it might be there is a cap on the cost of sacking the manger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Yeah, I don't see them sacking him. I think he will have to prove next season that he deserves season 3, but they won't boot him yet, imo.

My point was a more general point that IF they did, the club should be already operating in such a way that sacking a manager and replacing them would be done within a framework - so that the squad we assemble under one manager is correct for th enext manager. Like look at Liverpool/Slot - they picked him because they felt he was the best fit (and very good) for the squad they already had - that he wouldn't need a major overhaul of players and player style to work his system.

If United sack Amorim, the same thinking should apply.

When looking at players: How do we want to play and what players are needed to accomplish that.
When looking at managers: How do we want to play and what managers will help accomplish that.

So my general point is that everything we do should be with an end goal in mind - so it isn't about sacking Amorim or not, it isn't about 'backing' him with specific signings - its about buying the players that United need to accomplish its goals, and Amorim should already be on board with that (as should Berrada, and Wilcox, and Vivel etc)

This hits the nail on the head. This summer is as much about backing themselves (the Ineos football guys) as it is Amorim.

Despite how bad it has been, I think Amorim will be given next year, but even if there are doubts... It shouldn't affect the summer activity.

I'm showing my age but football365 probably peaked 20 odd years ago with their daily lookalike section. I think that's the first time I've been back on the site since then, immature me did get a laugh at some of those lookalikes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,301 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Rumoured to be on approx €8m per year and contracted until Summer 2027. So approx €16m in compensation this summer or €8m next, if it works as simply as paying out the remaining contract.

Tbf Mee is currently injured or else he would be 4th.

The bigger issue is our goalkeepers seem to be trained by Patches O'Houlihan and obviously just get wrenches/spanners violently launched at them. Naturally Onana isn't blocking them but Bayindir, Heaton and Mee all tried to save them and got crocked.

Quite a good vid from the Muppetiers lad about finances and how we should proceed.

what do we think of ruben's comments re the europa league?

throwing in the towel? like, the building would be a lot easier if we won a trophy this season.

“Of course we lost last week in the cup, so people are looking at this Europa League as the unique competition that we can win,” head coach Amorim told Sky Sports.

“Also, the connection with winning the Europa League with Champions League (qualification following).

“I know it’s strange to say that but it’s something that we are trying to build here, that is going to be more important than winning a cup in this moment.

“I know the responsibility that we have to fight for every trophy, but in this moment we are trying to build something that is going to last more than any trophy this season.”

Didnt do a whole lot. They made 4 changes at 1-1 and went on to win 3-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I'd read it as him saying our goals are longer term rather than specifically trying to win the EL.

That we have prioritised the future rather than this season so have to accept winning the EL this season may be too difficult. And that not winning it doesn't mean the plan has failed.

I expect we will try to win it. I expect he wants to win it.

Talk of 180K a week contract for Mainoo

Hopefully it's not true or we haven't learned anything.

He’s right to say that building the team is more important than winning a trophy. It should go without saying at this stage really. (look at the cup wins in the last 2 seasons - the bigger picture, it doesn’t mean that much to me because of what followed performance wise, league table position wise.)

There’s always mixed opinions on this - it feels like the majority say ‘I’d rather the FA Cup than finishing 2nd in the league’. I’m not saying it’s wrong, we’re all entitled to an opinion and everyone has their own interpretation of what a trophy means to them but… for me… I would prefer if we were actually competitive in the league and building towards challenging to actually win it. (I don’t mean finish 2nd once and 5th the next season and 3rd the next. I mean finish 2nd and IMPROVE on it next season and again until we win it. Something we can’t seem to do.)

It’s been 12 years since we won the league. I’ve seen us win trophies all my life, it’s great on the day. I want to see us win the league again, desperately. Like I can’t put it into words how much I want that to happen. 2 domestic cups mean little to me if they’re followed by 8th & 12th-16th league finishes.

I’m not too bothered about winning the Europa League again (on the night it’s great, don’t get me wrong) but I do want us to be in the Champions League next season, (that’s mainly because I want to see more United games tbh, as much as they wreck my head at times) I want us to compete against the best. (I’m aware we’re obviously nowhere near ready for that now but who knows what happens between now and August).

I also don’t think Amorim is throwing in the towel. I think he’s just setting the right expectations - I’m sure he would love to win it and will try to win it. It feels like he’s just making a point that no matter how this season ends, the most important thing is moving in the right direction and not papering over the cracks with a trophy win, which isn’t always an indication of improvement or a good side.

I wonder what the club thinks are the progression targets to hit next season. Do we need to see us controlling games with possession? Getting top 6 relatively easily?

Or will it be a case of, he only got 3 players and not 5 so his hands are tied and next another 5 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭GolfPar

It's most likely there will be no European football next season so that will help in terms of fixtures and time to work with players whoever they may be.

UUnfortunately he doesn't seem to have improved many of the current team.

both project 150 and project 2028 have us winning the league in 27/28 or 28/29, unsure which year.

lets see - i'm fast losing faith in the lot of them.

Really depends on signing for me if we continue to sign younger players and are lining up with 7 lads 22 or under most weeks you'd be hoping for a top 6 battle and the manager getting his system properly embedded in.

If we somehow manage to move on some of the big earners and make some ready starters then might be looking to battle for top 4 and his system embedded in.

O and in either scenario winning the champions league after winning the Europa this season....
