They are the ones who should be doing the apology to Zelenskyy not the other way around.

Absolutely despicable and treacherous stab in the back. I have Ukrainian friends who have lost everything including family members. That Trump seeks to reward Russia for its war of aggression?

Is disgusting, Europe must ensure Ukraine can achieve a just peace. Anything else? Is basically a Versailles MK2. Unless Russia loses? They will keep coming back for more.

That Guardian article from this morning already going mouldy.

Good, it's either the beginning of the end and a road to stopping the war or Europe decides to go all WW3.

Well there we have it folks, crying like the petulant child he is, and taking orders from his boss Putin.

What is a just peace? Surely it is Russia leaving and Ukraine's territory made whole again.

I'm afraid Europe does not have the enabling capacity of the US to keep Ukraine in the fight after current US support runs out.

Zelensky is at the end of the road here and needs to come to terms with Trump.

Maybe Trump's plan isn't so bad because the presence of US contractors (some of which will be private defence contractors) is a defacto guarantee.

Either way a deal needs to be reached now I think. Then Europe can put together a peacekeeping force.

Wow can't believe trump just done that ,I'm fairly sure the us military won't be happy as will alot of the American people, what happens now ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭harryharry25

Can't see it happening myself, but if Trump does arm Russia to attack Ukraine we will have the same gobshites crying about it that tell us arming Israel to attack Palestine and beyond is fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭briany

Europe may not have the capacity, but the fact is that the US under Trump isn't a rational or honourable actor.

Even if the US agreed to something, how could European leaders be sure that Trump wouldn't just rip it up the next week. It's not as if Trump isn't ridiculously capricious.

And, at the end of the day, if Trump did renege on an agreement, there's fk all Europe would do about it. They've as much as admitted they haven't the hard power to use as clout.

After last weeks charade, and his general history, why would any country or person trust Trump at all?

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

He wasnt getting the attention - so he’s snatching back control- guaranteed this is designed to get rid of Zelensky-it will be a condition of restarting military aid- he certainly has putins hand up his arse now

Trump is 100% a Russian asset, there is literally no alternative I can think of to explain his behavior towards them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,940 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

A statement from PM Trudeau, he is handling this so very well. Start contrast to Trump.

Well it was likely to happen after last weeks meeting.

Zelensky tried to bluff Trump but he has a very weak hand so its backfired. He is no position to dictate terms.

The US has reportedly paused military aid to Ukraine. The pause, Trump officials told media outlets, is only temporary for now.

Its obviously a way of getting Zelensky to reconsider and agree to a deal, Trump has had enough of the war and wants it over.

Hopefully Zelensky & Europe will come to their sense's now.

Trump has had enough of the war?!

How has this war personally bloody affected Trump for him to have "enough of it"?!!

Would you ever get off this wobbly fence you claim to sit on and face the reality that the fat orange toad who thinks he's some kind of world mafia boss with his "I made you strong guy" bullsxxt to Zelenskyy is acting out Putin's wishes.

The free press not allowed in to that meeting room but TASS are allowed and afterwards the administration claim they don't know how they got in the room?! A Russian state media broadcaster can just stroll in to the White House unchecked, set up their equipment and live stream back to Moscow and nobody stopped them?!

It's constant lie and fxxking lie with Trump, the GOP and this administration and apologists like you are who contribute to doubling down of "the left" against their views.

This was the plan, long before last weeks debacle in the office.

Trump was always against aid to Ukraine because Biden wanted to send it. This is pure pettiness on Trumps side, just like he always is.

Trump cares little about how this war ends, he legitimately thinks that Putin will abide by it, despite him breaking agreements before. He is out to try and get the Nobel peace prize, just because Obama got it and we all know he loves Obama.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,940 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Hopefully, treating America with increased suspicion is the only way forward now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,397 ✭✭✭dogbert27

You think in that scenario Putin really hands back the territories he's taken?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,397 ✭✭✭dogbert27

I'd be sick if he was awarded a Nobel Prize.

He's essentially blackmailing Ukraine to give rights of their rare metals to the US or he will stop all support. This is as much bullying as what Russia are doing.

It’s all he cares about, because it’s for him. However, even with this deal it’s not peace, it’s a ceasefire. Peace only comes when Russia is sent home packing. Fully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,397 ✭✭✭dogbert27

    Great response.

Best way to stand up to a bully is to punch them back. You're not going to be able to just talk and get them to see things your way.

Trump is badly mistaken other countries as small poor schmuck contractors that he was able to screw over, bully and put out of business.

I think his first stint at president the world didn't know what to expect. This time around everyone knows what was coming and are ready to react.

If your opinion on the Ukraine war is in the same company as Nigel Farage, Piers Morgan, Peter Mandelson and that clown duo act in the White House, you need to take a hard look at yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,593 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Where are congress in all of this, how is it Trump can just do whatever insane thought pops into his head without proper process?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

I don't understand the US putting tariffs on Canada goods. Escalating with Canada will seriously hurt lots of Trumps base voters. Canada trade is vital to the US.

    Dumb move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭chicken foot

When you approach his actions from the context of being a Russian asset then everything he is doing makes total sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,054 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

    So, we have gone from

"Trump will end the war on day one" to....

"**** Ukraine, let Russia have it"

And not a word from his followers.

No expression of disappointment, no admission that he couldn't do what he promised he would do.

Instead, they just momentarily freeze like an overworked computer, reset their world view to align with Trump's new stance, probably with the assistance of some right wing twitter account or fox news, and then continue on, as if that has always been the plan.

Trump was right about one thing. In 2015 he said he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th avenue, and he wouldn't lose any votes. To a huge portion of the American public, that's absolutely true.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

All Trump is doing is pulling a hustle with his bro Putin . I have no doubt that they’ll be massive investment in the Black Sea and the Levant . Not necessarily from the US but once the deal is done he’ll be right in there to clean up financially as will Vlad . He’s a Russian agent in plain sight

Trump will never manage to give military aid to Russua. It would need to pass through Congress and tge Senate. While he might through Congress he have several defections in the Senate

    Slava Ukrainii

I have an American friend on FB, that I came across due to mutual love of a certain rock band. This guy is full maga, and I get to see his daily posts which are essentially maga propaganda. Funnily enough whatever algorithm FB uses it seems to always push his posts to the top of my feed. But, whatever...

Anyway, this mornings post from him is very eye opening to see how the narrative and policy has completely shifted from "leader of the free world" to "isolationist I'm alright Jack" .

Make no doubt about it, American is no longer a friend of Europe now.

Europe is on its own in the fight against Putin
