Considering where in Alaska Wasilla is, I think it's safe to say she wan't being entirely truthful, to put it diplomatically, when she claimed or 'confirmed' that.

A Republican politician being 'economical with the truth' or telling a terminological inexactitude - would you believe it possible!

It's almost like the Domino theory is being advanced by both sides in this debate where the future of Europe is concerned. Ukraine being the prime domino from the European aspect and the Federation republics from the Russian aspect, Putin fearing NATO assimilating the republics with NATO fearing the Russification of the former USSR republics. This debate here seems to be running along similar lines with a majority fearing the creeping Russian seizure of Ukraine's territory as proof of Putin's plan while a minority opine that Putin has an equal right to self-defence even when it includes Russia's military invading the sovereign territory of Ukraine.

The question is revolving around one thing now; the fact, and not the theory, that Russia actually invaded Ukraine, with which it had international agreements that it would not do so, the quid pro quo from Ukraine was that it would do away with the nuclear weapons it had in its arsenal as a former USSR republic. Ukraine fulfilled its part of the deal while Russia did not. Russia took further steps in Ukraine by getting a Private Militia and Chechnyan and N/Korean troops involved in assisting it in its war against Ukraine.

Ukraine, rightly, pointed out to the world and to Trump that there was no guarantee from Russia that it would withdraw its forces behind its borders and that previous guarantees from Russia were ignored by Russia. Trump and Vance shouted down that point when Zelenskyy mentioned it in the Oval Office and continually repeated their line that Zelenskyy was the warmonger in the room. All this was caught live on air and disseminated to the world courtesy of the media group which Trump and Vance had invited and assembled in the Oval Office.

The arguments that Zelenskyy, who was elected to office between both Russian invasions of Ukraine, is as guilty as Putin for the war is sick in the extreme. The very worst that can be levelled at him in the continuation of the war is that he wants Putin to withdraw Russia's military forces off Ukrainian territory and behind Russia's borders before he [Zelenskyy] and Ukraine sign a deal involving the safety of the Ukrainian state and territory. It is normal for the aggressor to be obliged to retreat its forces to behind its borders and to stand them down from invasion mode for a ceasefire to take hold. It is not normal for a third party country posing as a peacemaker to tell the country suffering from the effects of an ongoing invasion that its to shut up, it has spoken too much about the aggressor nation AND then to accuse it of being the aggressor looking to start WWIII.

I listened to Jeffry Sachs addressing the EU parliment - I assume over a year ago as ML Wallace and Clare Daly were in the ‘audience’. Most of what he said made perfect sence to me. BUT three things JUMPED out , namely:-

    (1) he said that you talk directly to your adversary and clearly express your concerns to him and ask him to consider how he might address them and visa versa - and at all times discussions are held - using cool heads - in a courteous and fair manner. My issue with that is what if you are dealing with with a psychopath, someone with a serious ADHD condition , a cleptomaniac , a serial rapist, a misogynist, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Am only asking the question , but did Stalin, Hitler Mussolini,, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, have such conditions as outlined above or similar issues.
Note that I have NOT NAMED current national or ex leaders still alive

    (2) he mentioned that the US got ‘shirty’ when Russia was thinking of placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. And , he said, Putin does not want Ukr Joining NATO and therefor having nuclear missiles placed. Within 8 minutes from Moscow. But can Ukr not join NATO and without having to place any nuclear missiles in its country? Ukr can buy / make its own guns, tanks, drones, or whatever from its own resources and the only difference that NATO membership would bestow would be that if it was attacked that other NATO members won.d come to it’s aid.
As a side issue , nuke sites do not have to be next or near Russia because of technological advances. They could be anyplace in the world because of ships/ submarines

Not sure what that has to go with my post but anyway.

Russia won't touch NATO. Zero chance. They'd be mauled. Putin has already embarrassed himself enough in military terms.

So in terms of domino effect, what Europeans countries are not in NATO?

    Moldova, Serbia, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland?

The only country realistically at risk is Moldova. Serbia is land locked.

When USA start removing all their bases from Eastern Europe, I will be worried. That will never happen either.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The talk about banning Twitter is a bit short sighted. It's already bleeding money and advertisers are getting off it. It's not even a social media site these days. It's just there to serve Musk and his narcissism.

Banning it in Europe would play into his hands immensely. It would cause even more division amongst people. And Musk and his cult would be able to play the free speech/censorship card. What Europe should (already) be doing is pool its collective talent and resources to build a real competitor to X.

The same goes for all the major US based online services. We've allowed ourselves to become far too reliant and beholden to a small number corporation that will never have our best interests at heart.

I'd be much happier to see these cancerous tech companies treated as publishers instead of this absurd pretence of neutrality. If they want to host fake news and libel, they can be treated accordingly in the eyes of the law.

She didn't. That line is from a SNL skit. She did say you can see Russia from an island in Alaska which is true.

At his age he won’t have too many years to enjoy his achievements. Guess he aiming for a place in the ‘Dictators Resort’ in the afterlife. Can’t see any of his acolytes carrying on his mission but at least he won’t be in eternity with the mere crooks.

I understand people “reacting” - a lot of this has been fast paced and frankly brutal over last few weeks- and given this is a discussion thread I can also understand instant reactions being posted -hopefully though, over coming weeks and months people will get the measure of each “event” and try and respond with a more measured approach - I guess it’s hard to be positive right now

Completely. The argument has always been that moderation is unworkable with so many millions of users so a best effort basis should be good enough(which X already doesn’t do), but that misses the point.

Traditional media has been regulated with a simple principle - once you have an audience, you have a responsibility to that audience to provide factual information to the best of your ability. With social media there’s no reason why that same principle can’t apply. You have users with 500k followers+ then you should be hammered with penalties for not ensuring the account isn’t spreading misinformation.

Same with Spotify, if they want to pay millions to Joe Rogan for his podcast they should be prepared to keep his content truthful or face huge fines.

The point about traditional media is dead though (especially in America). Traditional media is now the mouthpiece for whatever interest group the billionaire that owns it wants.

I miss the days when news organisations reported the facts without the endless stream of opinionated idiots chiming in to put a spin on it. US news media is nothing but entertainment now.

I agree with you, it would be insane for Russia to attack NATO.

Georgia? As for what Trump will do next, he's giving his address to Congress tomorrow so he may reveal his thoughts and plans for the US then.

It isn't. If it were dead, nobody would be watching and they'd have dropped their broadcast operations by now. Obviously, social media is the big player right now but traditional media is still important.

Traditional media is now the mouthpiece for whatever interest group the billionaire that owns it wants.

Was it ever different? Of course, I mean after the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine.

My point was traditional media being regulated and a trusted source of truth. I believe that is no longer the case. As in dead as a trusted source.

On looking back at Fridays media event in the Oval Office, I realised I had missed the bigger picture. Following on from the barring of the Associated Press from the White House and AF one on Trumps orders because it wont obey his order to use Gulf of America instead of Gulf of Mexico, there was a change in whom could assign the seating at White House briefings from it being the press pool who decided who sat where and asked questions by a rota system it controlled to one where the White House is now assigning the seats so as to control the media and its questions.

The bigger picture now is that Trump has co-opted the media [the free press] attending the White House media events to broadcast his propaganda to the world and there was no mention of his misuse of the media there to broadcast his personal attack on Zelenskyy.

It's alarming that some of the owners of the Free Press papers are editing and shutting down anything critical of Trump or Musk being published in the papers. Tomorrow's address of congress by him should be revealing in so far as whom will be allowed televise and report on the address.

This is just hyperbole and not going to happen. But again the US have supplied finance and weapons to Israel to carry out the genocidal campaign against the children of Gaza on a scale far worse than Ukraine, and the shrieking Starmer, Macron, Trudeau et al have stood firmly behind Israel and made no critiques of the US whatsoever. F#cking hypocrisy by these so called 'leaders'...

On the Sky News programme there's a side screen with the words 6.30PM US President Trump to make investment announcement. Nothing further as to what he's going to say so the screen will be watched to hear what means by investment; federal or private.

I assume that if he's going to interfere with private investment, he'll have to use some section of US law rarely used. The powers he has to decide on federal funding use might be averse to Congress decisions on funding things. With tomorrows speech to Congress ahead of him, he might try and forestall trouble there by mentioning what's on his mind tonight.

    Fair enough.

    Meanwhile, on my Facebook feed:

They're actively pushing this creature now that he's safely in the US.

In my day (I'm only early 40's btw), we would ridicule that sort of crap. How are young men falling for that nowadays?

    'Peak Male Experience'

Back in the day you'd be called gay if you were into that, but thankfully such slurs are a thing of the past(!), which is why youngsters are into it.

Nowadays it's only gay if you respect women and don't worship massive dicks

US has approximately 9 times the population of Ukraine. If the US was invaded and affected proportionally as Ukraine is, you would have:

4 to 5 million American casualties

    45 million American refugees

    62 million Americans displaced

20% of the land area of America in enemy hands, maybe 10 states

    Nearly all American cities bombed

    180,000 American children kidnapped

Would Trump and Vance be expressing gratitude to a country suggesting that the US cede 20% of their lands to an enemy without any security guarantees? This to an enemy who had previously broken every previous agreement?

Would they be happy to hand over minerals worth 5 trillion dollars?

Would they mind being berated if they didn't accept these conditions as being 'not interested in peace or diplomacy'?

Pretty sure Trump and Vance would have hotfooted it to Turks and Caicos in that scenario.
