Ah no going to killarney for a couple of days that weekend are the old tickets refundable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,101 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Surely they were refundable once the game was postponed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭Village87

Yes that is a fair point there is a core of clubs around the mid to south east, Glenmore, Tullogher, Thomastown, Rower, Mullinavat, Shamrocks and Carrickshock. After that the south are producing nothing to Kilkenny

That's true but if the likes of mooncoin were located a few miles away from kilkenny city and there players went to kieran's I'd bet my bottom dollar they'd have more of a representation on Co squads.

Martin ó Néill and Paul hennebery were 2 of the best players in last year's club championship. Either of those 2 would be more deserving than a few players on the current senior panel no problem.

Went to supervalu today they said no refunds ah well

I reckon Mooncoin will start to come on. It's grown massive in the last 10 years, at some stage those numbers will tell, they're fairly decent underage too.

Piltown is a soccer village. A fair complex in fairness, but only for the camogie it'd be a GAA wilderness. That being said, any time I've been at a Kilkenny match, you'd always see a nice crew from Piltown at it.

To be honest with you, from Ballyhale on down, there's only two schools, Mooncoin which is fairly small (130 pupils) and Abbey College (900+) which is mostly Waterford students due to it's location. Compare it North Kilkenny with Johnstown & Castlecomer at the other end of the county with 500+ students each, and the likes Ballyhale, Thomastown, Callan and Graigue with bigger numbers, not to mention the town schools.

There's an awful lot of lads in South Kilkenny, one of the best forms of development for young players seeing as with a schools they would be used to playing with lads from other clubs as well, that have to do their schools hurling outside of Kilkenny compared to the rest of the county, and which we have no clue of their development.

We've really dropped the ball with the investment in schools teams where it used to be one of our great strengths. And we should have been highly vocal against the change to stopping amalgamated schools from competing (or at least we should pushed for a limit in terms of pupils numbers per amalgamation) given the small size of some our schools, which effectively rules most of them out of things.

If we had Thomastown, Ballyhale, Abbey College and Mooncoin as a South Team, Callan, the Gaelscoil, Griague and Kilkenny Tech as Mid Team and Castlecomer and Johnstown as a North team, all fully coached and funded by the county board, playing against Kieran's and the CBS (and maybe inviting the likes of Good Counsel or other schools on the Kilkenny border into a Kilkenny schools league), would that be so bad? So what if one of the amalgamated teams wins and can't compete in the AI phase, we'd still be developing Kilkenny underage hurling.

When you look at what some counties have in the Harty Cup for comparison, you'd wonder sometimes are doing as much as we can.

Maybe that's a big reason why the Deep South is in such bad shape generally.

Excellent post randd1. Kilkenny should have a combined schools team competing in the A championship for schools not playing A hurling. Other counties are doing it, Offaly, Laois, Wexford, Westmeath and Dublin. These combined schools teams are run and coached by the paid county board coaches in these counties. They can win Leinster but not go into the all Ireland series like Offaly did recently. Students can then also play with their own schools team at the lower grade. Would mean that every student in Kilkenny gets a chance to play schools A hurling. Instead we have students going past their local schools into the 2 big city schools such as the big numbers from Callan going into town but not getting any schools hurling as they dint make the teams. Nothing against the likes of Kierans but they had 6th year past county minors on the bench against cbs who didn't see any game time in that match. Not really a good sign. This is something I would have thought Michael Fennelly would have done by this stage.

Nice representation in the Freshers final tonight with a number of players on both UL and UCC panels which is good to see

One club that impresses me in regards to producing County hurlers are Glenmore. They are a small parish and a lot smaller than Ballyhale/Knocktopher and Thomastown.

All of their players do go to Good Counsel in Wexford so they get exposed to A level post primary hurling but the Murphys, Ger Alyward and now Billy Reid, the Vereker brothers, Jack Dollard, Jason Cody and Cathal Beirne are all seriously good hurlers.

Murphy's went to New Ross Vocational School as did many of their players and played for Wexford Schools amalgamated team in the A championship, Ian Byrne went to Abbey as do lots from Glenmore. I think Cathal Beirne was in Kilkenny CBS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭conor05

My mistake, I had presumed with their close proximity to New Ross they would have went to Good Counsel.

Yes a great club, similar to Tullaroan of the north.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 Takeyourpoints

Agreed re Tullaroan and Glenmore. We've talked about South Kilkenny, but out of the clubs in the north and central, what other clubs are exceeding expectations and what clubs do you think are below expectations in senior?

Obvious ones that are below expectations would be some of the bigger towns like Callan, Graignamanagh, even Comer who have a big pick but haven't had a regular starter since Fogarty. Of the ones that are exceeding, Tullaroan are the obvious ones but other northern country clubs have been struggling the last few years. I'm not including Bennettsbridge here as with the size of it I think they're actually producing the right amount of players in the last 10 years.

Thoughts? This isn't to criticise clubs it's just an open discussion. I also don't want this to turn into Dicksboro bashing, it's been mentioned plenty of times

Glenmore as one example...they continue to produce players to county teams/developmentsquads. What is the population....is it around 1000? What they did from late 80s and through the 90s is a remarkable feat for such a small club and are producing players consistently albeit will need development etc.

They also have a very decent grounds down there with indoor option for training.

Especially when compared to some larger clubs

If only Good Counsel had Kieran`s recruitment enthusiasm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 402 ✭✭Krazy gang

You're right though. Most of the glenmore lads go to good counsel. 4 of them on the team that played kieran's in the leinster semi final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭conor05

Correct but the best hurler in Good Counsel is actually a 16 year old called Sean O'Brien from Cushinstown in Wexford.

    He is incredible.

He is a grandson of sixties Wexford star Jimmy O’Brien, while his father, Larry, is a former under-age defender with Kilkenny.

    Not a bad team

    Will TJ make an appearance?

    Still no Mullen....

How far are John Donnelly and Mullen away from fitness?

Would like to See Mackessy get a half a match in midfield if his knee is better as I am not convinced them two lads Doyle & Molloy have the physicality as a pairing, but we will see.

CORK (Allianz HL v Kilkenny): Patrick Collins (Ballinhassig); Niall O'Leary (Castlelyons), Eoin Downey (Glen Rovers), Ger Millerick (Fr O'Neills); Ciarán Joyce (Castlemartyr), Robert Downey (Glen Rovers), Micheál Mullins (Glen Rovers); Darragh Fitzgibbon (Charleville), Tim O'Mahony (Newtownshandrum); Declan Dalton (Fr O'Neills), Shane Barrett (Blarney), Diarmuid Healy (Lisgoold); Brian Hayes (St Finbarr's), Robbie O’Flynn (Erin's Own), Patrick Horgan (Glen Rovers).

Stopping Cork's pace at source and not allowing them to run through us will be the key tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 642 ✭✭✭mullinr2

Not going to happen for Kierans today. Athenry well on top. The two Kilkenny schools bet by the two Galway schools. Bad omen for the minor championship

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 421 ✭✭droppingball

Think the schools is under 19 and half so not as many minors as used to be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭Alonzo Moseley

Hard luck to Kierans and CBS, both teams just too young to go all the way, Kierans didnt have a single forward from last year and it showed against a very strong Athenry team.

When I saw Jake Mullen was out, I feared the worst, but even still they were unlucky with two of the Athenry goals being very fortunate.

Athenry have been producing strong teams for over a decade and with Niland now back, will surely break their duck in final, and good luck to them too.

Wouldnt read a lot into either semi as regards current KK underage strength, both teams will be very strong contenders next year.

Nice throw straight to Fitzgibbon there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,066 ✭✭✭kksaints

I know I'm biased but the Tg4 commentators don't half cream themselves over anything positive that Cork do.

Ball into the forwards hasn't been the best so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 662 ✭✭✭Neewollah

Ball in poor alright but lack of pace in there being exposed too

Blanchfield could go handy on the pot shots
