I have no issue, I just called you out on your exaggeration.

You clearly do have an issue with hidden cameras and stricter enforcement.

You said most drivers speed then you go on to say how you don’t want hidden cameras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭billie1b

I never said I was against enforcement, I just called you out on your exaggerated statements. If you want to bring up a point and try get something done there is no point in lying or exaggerating about it, it doesn't help your cause. If i'm being honest, I see a lot more problems on roads causing crashes than speeding does.

Yes that 80 kmph to 60kmph is ignored by many.

Needs cameras for queue jumpers that cause stationary waves on the M50. All lanes on the bridge should have solid white lines, as lots fail to match speed before trying to merge.

Needs cameras for the N4 bus lane east bound.

yes the cameras would pay for themselves very quickly, or just leave them running for a month and you'd easily get repeat offenders to the point where they'd have to be on their best behaviour if they don't want to be disqualified.

can you please quote where I said that statement?, as it wasn't me, I never said that.

I've no issue with speed cameras, considering i'm driving 26 years and have never had a fine or penalty point for speeding.

    My issue was your exaggerations

the whole idea of the camera is to slow people down in accident blackspots, if people are applying their brakes then it's working.

This post above implies you are against hidden cameras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭billie1b

em no it doesn't, it's explaining to you how speed cameras work and why people are braking and why the location of the camera. The RSA have said this on numerous occassions also, does that mean they're against hidden cameras?

Hiding them won't prevent apps live Waze from alerting from them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭cheers big ears

How? If they’re disguised as wheelie bins or council vans and constantly moved around no one will know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,905 ✭✭✭GerardKeating

The only practicle way of hiding "mobile speed" cameras is as unmarked or "disguised" vans and the internet will identify them quickly.

Not if they can be hidden in fake wheelie bins, integrated into various lamp posts, you won’t know which is which or whether they’re active or not so play Russian Roulette.

Edited typo in the word not.

That can't be right. I was caught a few hundred metres out, by a van. Nowhere near the 40m.

Maybe I should have asked for the photo, for curiosity sake.

So they work off some kind of doppler light sensor?

All those “radar jammers” are probably gimmicks then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

Looks like I’ll have to challenge it so. As I was well under the speed limit, long before I was anywhere close to 40m from the van.
It was four years ago, shouldn’t be any bother. 😂

They do to the point most solicitors will say if the points are going to cost you, it is worth the coin toss.

The analogy though of fish in a barrel that is often used is grossly misleading, mainly due to human bias, as undoubtedly, these same people do the same things.

The reason the analogy is misleading though is that the fish were given the choice to get in the barrel, with full knowledge that there is a risk they will get shot. They can stay out of the barrel with no consequence, but if they get in, they do so voluntarily, and with full knowledge they might get shot.

They are a deterrent and they slow cars down when they are seen.

With that being said they are never on the small, narrow, windy, side roads where the majority of our fatal collisions occurred last year due to speeding. You are also correct to point out drivers who slam on the brakes when they see them.

Is there much benefit to the public in catching somebody doing 103km/h on a 2 or even 3 lane straight main road?

I think signs that say "Speed cameras ahead, limit 100km/h" laid on our roads would be a better deterrent

They are a deterrent and they slow cars down when they are seen.

which is why they're pointless. they don't slow cars down when they're not seen.

they have a range of something like 40m to 60m and are designed to be as visible as possible; which makes them essentially useless.

And how do you fit a van on such a road?

You’re just reinforcing the argument for hidden and compact speed cameras.

True, but at least it means anyone who is caught is not watching the road, which is far more dangerous than straying over the limit in my view.

I had the pleasure of watching the car in front of me being caught by one a couple of years ago, they were on the phone and had already annoyed me being slow to move away from a green light and then weave all over the lane. Was delighted to see the speed camera flash as they passed it!

Technically, I speed most of the time. I use cruise control most of the time as well, when conditions allow it. Up to 80 km/h on the speedometer, I set it to 5 km/h above. For 100 and 120 km/h limits, I set it to 6 km/h above. The net result is a real speed which is 2 - 3 km/h above the posted limit. I check my speed regularly when not using cruise control, usually every 10 - 15 seconds when on the open road, more or less in tandem with checking the three mirrors.

I never slow down for speed cameras, when the road ahead is clear. I've never received a speeding ticket, nor a ticket for any driving offence and I've been driving for 25 years. I drive as fast as I can whilst still having no fear of being caught out for it. I absolutely favour the average speed cameras to be installed everywhere.

Why do you knowingly set it at 2-3 above the limit?

What do you think you’ll gain?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,218 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

it's real fish in a barrel stuff though. the vast majority of drivers will see them in time and have slowed down before detection can happen. so then they just speed up again after.

Interesting idea could be a ”speed van” that Stevie Wonder could see, after which people will speed up, only to be nabbed further up by a the real McCoy hidden somewhere else 😉

I want to get from A to B as fast as I can without having a fear of being fined or reprimanded. My most travelled route is a little over 80km so small enough changes in speed add up over time.

I guess I could ask a similar question to you: Why do you knowingly set your cruise control to 5 km/h below the posted limit (so probably about 7/8 km/h below (or more) in actual speed). What do you think you'll gain?

If we were both travelling eastbound from where the 100 km/h limit begins after Ballinalack and we were both exiting at junction 12 of the M4 at Kinnegad, we would have travelled just under 31km. About 24km of that distance is 100 km/h N-road and the remaining 7km is 120 km/h M-road. Based on what we ser out cruise control to, there would be about a 10 km/h difference in our speeds. For arguments sake, we'll say that I would be doing 103 km/h for the N road and 123 km/h for the M road, with you being 10 km/h slower and we'll pretend there are no slower cars in front.

So for my journey, the 100 km/h stretch would take me about 14 minutes and the 120 km/h section would take about 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Total time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds.

For your journey, the 100 km/h stretch would take you about 15 minutes and 30 seconds, and the 120 km/h section would take 3 minutes and 43 seconds. Total time of 19 minutes and 13 seconds.

So there you go, for just one section of a journey I regularly take, in one direction only and in one instance only, I already save nearly 2 minutes over your expected journey time. At the moment, I make that return trip about three times a week on average so that's over 10 minutes saved in a week. If I did the same amount of journeys for 50 weeks of the year, I would save over 8 and a half hours of time for just that 31km section of my 81 km trip.

That was done one morning a good few years ago on the N4 inbound in Dublin. There were 3 speed detection vans in place at the same time. One at Lucan, one at Liffey Valley and another a few hundred metres further on, just over the M50 flyover, before the Palmerstown lights. Was a sight to behold, I'd say there were a lot of speeders caught that day. Great idea too, and one that could go towards changing driver behaviour because passing a speed detection van does not mean that you won't be caught further up the same road.

That was (is?) where they used to train the camera operators and apparently no fines were issued for anyone captured during those training sessions.

    Hilarious.

Even on a 300 kilometre journey, assuming the whole thing is done at 123 km/h, you are only saving just over 3 minutes.

However, I doubt you are driving that far on a regular basis, so you are likely only saving 10 or so seconds. 🤡

Why I set the cc to 5 km/h below is no one’s business. I don’t need justification to follow the law, but you need justification to break it!

So, pray tell, why do you speed?
