They had Reagan and even then it was a national joke that Nancy (his wife) was the real power. But, don't assume there is some sort of national guilt for his election. Trump will be the same. Just another in the list.

Trump only ever acts in the best interest of Trump. If that means looking as though he is acting for America in order to get accolades, then that is what he will do.

Surely there are bigger forces at play in the US that wouldn’t allow trump to totally dismantle the US’s standing in the world?

As long as I can remember people in Ireland have been complaining about the US standing in the world.

From marches against Regan and his Star Wars, to marches against Bush and people breaking the premitier of Shannon airport to people angry over Trump.

There was always a complaint about US imperialism and the US being the self appointed policeman of the world.

And now with Trump pulling back and making the US more isolationist people are complaining about that.

So no different to what they've always done? Remember Martin was Minister for Health when the US were illegally invading Iraq under Bush and he and the government of the time had no qualms in allowing the US use Shannon to ship their troops - can't be allowing moral duty get in the way of investment!

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

    Essentially yes.

Reflecting on this “meeting” one day on, I’m kindof scratching my head here- as much as I admire Zelensky standing up to the orange idiot and his lapdog, I’m wondering why it came to this - whilst yes it was a set up , Zelensky could have been “diplomatic” and just waited to sign the deal - job done.

The fact he took this route, to me, means he didn’t want to sign the deal in its current form.

You're right, he's a business man. A bad one, so he's had to hone skills of being a life-long conman.

He doesn't seem to understand that the United States isn't a "start-up"

So yeah we have this obscene situation of this populist bumbling through political situations because he keeps trying to turn everything into a business deal or real estate deal (Gaza) because it's all he knows.

The only deal Trump had up his sleeve was a Ukrainian surrender. When the EU didn't fall in behind the POTRUS that plan was scuppered.

Now he has nothing but little shows to settle scores with men why he is jealous of.

If things go really bad for MM in the Oval Office I would love to hear him say "Lovely place you have in Doonbeg. Pity if anything ever happened to it"

The Orange One might understand that.

( above is only an attempt at black humour, so don't get too indignant.)

Yes, MM knows we are more and more dependent on US companies for our economy. We have chosen not to support our main indigenous industries, tourism and farming so have chosen to be dependent on the US. Being moralistic about the US would just be hypocritical when we have our hands out for their money.

Wow people complaining when America does bad things. People complain about America damaging the world not policing it.

Regan was wrong, Bush was wrong and Trump is wrong.

He had no option really. The guy beside him just said that in negotiations you have to plamas all sides, which is why he was being nice to Putin, while only days previous he had called VZ a dictator, no elections, blamed him for the war etc.....

Not exactly being nice to both sides.....

In fairness VZ didn't really have any choices in how he dealt with that.

It couldnt have been easy with limited English in front of a hand picked media core as well.

The question about the suit was absolutely ridiculous btw. VZ has been wearing that garb everywhere since the war started. As was the consistent allegations that VZ hadn't thanked Trump.

The whole thing is a **** show and at the root of it, Ukrainians and Russians are dieing......

Trump is acting like a dodgy builder who charges five times the reasonable cost for their work with no guarantees that it will still be standing in a few years time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,472 ✭✭✭circadian

The whole thing was gamed against him, regardless of what he done there would be personal attacks from Trump and Vance. The entire debacle was an attempt to discredit him and make him look unreasonable. There is no reason to believe a workable deal was ever on the table regarding the US.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,413 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

It was a very badly acted/rehearsed setup by Trump/Vance. They both look like petulant children.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭Papagei

I think he's acting in the best interest of America, he wants to stop spending tens of billions of dollar on wars. He wants to get America's finances in order. They currently have a 6% budget deficit in terms of GDP. That's unsustainable.

Putin is in a stronger position than Zelensky, so he has to be nicer to him to get him to stop the war. Zelensky is in a weaker position because he's reliant on US support to defend against Russia.

I know all the Republican politicians will line up with Trump through sheer cowardice. But how will this play with a large section of his base who grew with Russia been the Commie enemy.

It is obvious Trump is now siding with Russia, so will they all just accept this as the new reality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,732 ✭✭✭✭looksee

The whole thing is a **** show and at the root of it, Ukrainians and Russians are dieing.....

The difference being that if Russia stops fighting, Russians and Ukranians stop dying. If Ukraine stops fighting their country is taken over and they cease to exist as a nation.

Perhaps the ease in which he blames Ukraine for the war and calls Zelensky a dictator whilst completely dodging any questions as to the culpablity of Russia and Putin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,226 ✭✭✭✭kippy

I don't disagree. But people are dying at an alarming rate and have been for several years now. The conflict will eventually end but none of those dead peoples families will have any comfort.

It is likely now all US support for Ukraine will be withdrawn. That essentially ends up ensuring the conflict continues to role on while the EU continue to build towards and now almost certain EU army as NATO is almost dead in the water(another win for Putin). How many hundreds of thousands of people will die in the coming years over what is essentially a landgrab by one of the biggest countries by area in the world?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,851 ✭✭✭FishOnABike

9/11 may have had a more instant shock effect but the implications of last night's **** show are larger and more enduring. Far more people will suffer the consequences because of last night's **** show and what it signifies than suffered as a result of 9/11.

What concessions have Russia made in relation to the invasion? From what I've seen the US have pretty much justified his invasion at the UN. Show me a single point in US history where they've spoken to any dignitary like this in a public space.

You keep saying Zelensky is in a weaker position so they can behave like they want. Trump in a matter of weeks has destroyed the US relationship with Europe. Yesterday just nailed it in further.

Also he pretty clearly does not care about the US debt. His current tax plans are set to drastically increase their debt, backing Ukraine is a drop in the ocean next to it. He's trying to cast Zelensky as a villain so he can justify his failure to deliver on any of his promises. He's an almighty piece of ****.

You take that from watching the full conversation? It's clear that Zelensky didn't want to achieve anything yesterday. Zelensky knew what he was doing and that support from the US was over so only option is to hope this will pressure Europe into stepping up to continue the war. He doesn't seem to have realised though that the EU is vassal state of the US now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,287 ✭✭✭✭ted1

Trump simply wants to end the war. And that’s handing over the Ukraine to Russia and then taking whatever rare earths that Russia doesn’t get its hands on.

In what way could a president of a sovereign nations agree to those demands?

    what exactly was achievable?

couldnt believe what i saw last night…worrying times for sure…..,to me it looked like donnie wanted Zelensky to bow down to him and bend over, when that wasnt forthcoming that was the end of that…and dont forget donnie has the nuclear codes!

"They gave me an impossible task, one which they said I wouldnt return from...."

"You are him…the one they call the "Baba Yaga"…

yo! donnie vonshitzinpants, vlad putin, benji netanyahu..you sirs are the skidmarks on the jocks of humanity!!!

The whole disastrous monstrosity was incredibly unusual.

As an insight to how inept Trump and his ridiculous entourage are at the political game it was absolutely invaluable though. I'm struggling to recall another time where the White House had debased itself so, so, badly. Just when you think that Donald Trump and his lackies can't sink any further into the depths of depravity, they prove you wrong.

One can only hope that there are some Trump supporters/voters, at least, that are having some serious second thoughts after viewing that car crash last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,617 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

European leaders all backed Zelensky yesterday, also this nonsense of Europe being a "vassal" state of the US, have you been reading too much Russian propaganda or what? Trump literally had a journalist planted in the crowd in an effort to humiliate or **** on Zelensky. He never intended to get a deal at the end of that meeting.…
