The world has become a much more dangerous place since they gave the White House to Pennywise.

Things are happening now that I never thought I would see in my lifetime. Utterly sad.

Agreed, I’m no crazy fan of MM but thank god he’s going and not Simple Simon.

Keep talking about golf, how well Doonbeg is looking, hopefully the whole LIV/PGA division gets sorted, what great friends the Irish and US are, how handy Shannon is for refuelling etc etc

…hand over the shamrock and get tf out of there.

Was having the VP there and being very vocal not really unusual ?

Maybe I am just misremembering previous meetings but it seemed odd.

not unusual for this administration. They’re a double act of low-life

Probably afraid Trump would be totally outplayed by a real politician if he was on his own.

It was and it is, but Trumo hadn't handled Macron that well so they're putting Vance in to run interference I feel.

    It looks weak.

It smacked of a weak manager bringing along a side kick with the intention of dressing down an employee but failing miserably as neither were informed enough or had the intellect or experience to execute the plan.

Zelenskyy did okay in a surreal environment but his best weapon in response misinformed ignorance was to respond with questions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 626 ✭✭✭Jeju

CNN Fact checking how many times Zelensky thanked America... 33 times in total. Trumptin rembering Zelensky canvessed for Biden during the electiom and used the ocasion to fire a warning shot to observers that they in charge now and bewary to object or oppose us. The mineral deal means less to Trumptin than showing the Americans who is boss.

I keep thinking that nothing should come as a surprise with Trump but yesterday did surprise me and I was shocked to see and hear the carry on in the oval office .I have never been to the states but generally had a positive view of the country and to see what has happened to the country is pretty sad .Unfortunately most of his voters care little about Ukraine,Gaza etc so the only way things might go against him over the next couple of years is if those same voters feel a serious pinch in their pockets but that could take time .Dangerous times ahead I feel .

the campaigning that is being refereed to I believe was a tour of an arms factory that republicans were invited to attend but choose not to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,596 ✭✭✭francois

yeah, the similar responses from Graham and little Marco afterwards suggest this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 938 ✭✭✭JPCN1

    Terrifying.

Aside from one Republican congressman I have seen no pushback. Gutless stuff. How the Trump and Vance capitulation to Russia can be met with support or silence is beyond me. Gutless media too.

I think the reason for it all is that Trump is a business man not a politician.

He sees the mineral wealth in Ukraine and wants to have a piece of it for the US, as payment for support for the last few years being his alleged reason, but in reality he's just a man who sees everything as a commodity to buy and sell.

Same with Gaza. If one was to take the whole political thing out of it (which one obviously can't) you could see the logic of turning a underdeveloped stretch of beach side land into a huge property development opportunity.

Same with Panama, he wants lower costs for US shipping using it.

Same with the DOGE, it's all about cost savings.

He's a business man, hence the comments on Zelensky not wearing a suit. In Trump's world you come to a business meeting in a suit, and in Trump's world yesterday was first and foremost a business meeting.

And all this rankles the s**t out of the established political world because in their eyes it is not the way things are supposed to be done.

For years people here on boards have been saying that Michael O'Leary should be minister for this that and the other.

He'd sort out the waste etc in Irish government and civil service.

If he was then we would be getting our very own mini Irish version of Trump.

I taught when people comment on Zelensky's attire. When Churchill arrived at Christmas 1941 he spend the first few day's in a boilersuit. Even when out if the boiler suit he use to wear his navel jacket a lot ofvthe time to meetings

Don't allow something like that frame your view of America or Americans.

It's a big place and some parts are very different from one another, and the people are different, and I'd argue for the most part very nice and friendly.

You say that it's unfortunate that most of the voters care little about Ukraine or Gaza.

Why should they, they are conflicts a world away.

I've a newsflash for you, most Irish voters don't care about them either.

Did VZ leave the WH without any security detail and if so then why was that ?
Normally are not Motorbikes/ outriders, secret service in cars/ SUV type vehicles waiting along with the vehicle carrying a guest to and from the WH at all times?

I have absolutely no idea how or why, but is is beyond any doubt now the Kremlin have a puppet in the Whitehouse.

Not only is this stooge shredding American democracy and dismantling the guard rails he is legitimising a mass murdering despot and driving unrepairable wedges into long established Allies.

Putin himself could not be more destructive this fast if he was in the Whitehouse.

I don't have a lot of faith in either Macron or Starmer but Europe and by extension the world need them now, this is a watershed moment in our history, entertaining these predatory stooges should no longer be tolerated.

He's an entertainer, not nearly as smart as the high level business exec he plays at. I've had e-mail convos with Bill Gates and chatted once with Michael Bloomberg. Neither projects stupid and both were kind of frighteningly intelligent when you talked to them.

Trump Not so much. Plus, most of his business efforts fail, hence his dependence on RuZZian money, probably coming through Trumpcoins now.

Trump will be waking up later to some new enemies at home, I’m sure. Some of whom were more than willing to let the invade-Greenland-holiday-resort-Gaza business slide, but for some this is on a whole other level, undermining what is to be American. Interesting too that his very prominent vocal support across social media has gone quiet..

“The fact that society believes a man who says he’s a woman, instead of a woman who says he’s not, is proof that society knows exactly who is the man and who is the woman.”

How long do you think 'independent' republics would last before they are absorbed into Russia, de-facto or completely? Given more time and resources to rebuild, how long before Russia returns to annex more of Ukraine? I wouldn't expect a leopard to change its spots.

Ukraine's and Europe's longer term security depend on being part of a strong military aliance. Without that there is nothing to discourage Russia from coming back for the remainder of the Black sea coast and as much of Ukraine as they want. The best time to stop Russia is now.

    edit: miitary → military

My advice to MM when he “meets” Trump is as follows :-

    (1) LISTEN to what he and Vance is saying

    (2) his I only response to anything Trump/Vance says is. ‘I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING’

    (3) and if he wants to add to no 2 above he can say “ I hear what you are saying and we can discuss that in our - behind doors - meeting later on. “

    (4) another version of no 3 could be “ I hear what you are saying but we in Ireland would see it as a bit more complex than that”

Or he could offer Trump a deal on Irish Rare Earth...otherwise know as TURF.....worth a fortune it is 😁

Wouldn't be kowtowing to either of them to be honest.

Anyway, Martin like him or loath him would be an elite level politician compared to those 2 pound shop mob bosses.

I reckon he doesn't need our advice.

I actually posted on another thread that I hoped Trump would lay into Martin a bit with regard migration and foreign policy, oops stupid me! Trump and JD are just horrible nasty clowns, MM should just get up and walk out if they start the bully boy act.

    🙈🙉🙊
