There was one leader of the free world in the White House today

    And it wasn’t Trump

Zelenskyy’s attire was your biggest takeaway from that shambles, so stop trying to row back and just own it ffs. Embarrassing whataboutery nonsense from you.

Zelensky is long sorry now he swanned around Scranton last September defacto campaigning for Biden's successor Harris. Going home now with his rear end firmly kicked, but I think he'll be back with his tail between his legs covering up his sore rear end yet.

To be fair though to Zelensky, he's in a very precarious position. Ukraine is fast becoming a corpse of a nation with three vultures circling around. The EU are after it's farmland, the US is after what lies beneath and the Russian-Chinese-NK axis is after what ever lives above.

Zelensky's Ukraine has another 'Euromaiden' moment ahead of itself - it's getting rapidly closer to decision time. Which of the above will he choose? The EU have little to offer but safe sanctuary for some of it's middle + upper class citizens, and limited financial and military aid going forward. The USA has the capacity to blow the Russians back, but doesn't have the appetite for doing it. Russia want's pre-2014 Ukraine restored.

Tough choices. I don't envy Zelensky in reaching one, none of the above is not an option either.

He didn't say thank you 70 kajillion times, according to Vance.

I presume he met Martin because he was going to be the next leader in to meet Trump and wanted MM to be on message

The “exchange”/ambush of Zelenskyy live on TV reminded me of a Soprano’s episode where they have a “sit down”.

All that was missing from Trump/Vance statements was ending them with “boy”. It looked like Zelenskyy was going to break down in tears at one stage. It was really an unfair debate, no Ukrainian translator. For instance., Zelenskyy did not seem to understand Trump’s “cards” reference.

You are correct Zelenskyy looks screwed now and backed the wrong horse in the American election. Zelenskyy has not abandoned Ukraine though. He could easily have set up in exile at a safe distance.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Don't often agree much with what you say but "That could probably severely damage the defense industry, but he couldn't care about that"

Anything that hinders the large-scale production of munitions is to be welcomed.

Trump is playing the old game ,as in real estate, no matter what offers you have shoot them down and walk away, He made a show tonight for his TV voters ,but I'd say zalensky will be back in the white house tomorrow to seal the deal .

The long and short of it is Trump has already done the deal with Putin to give him what he wants most for prestige and maybe a all year round port .. The Crimea . He’s a negotiator end of and it’s not costing the US . But emboldening Putin is a dangerous game and the US won’t be able to stop him if he gets what he wants now

For some reason every Irish person obsessed with immigration is pro Trump and hates Zelensky

I wonder did Trump instruct Vance to be more vocal at these sitdown things after getting corrected by Macron there the last day and having to sit there with nothing to say in response? With Vance butting in, it buys Trump the time to think of his next bullish thing.

Hasn't abandoned Ukraine in fairness to him but totally agree he is screwed over backing the 'wrong horse' in the election.

The only outcome to settle this war as far as I can see is for an independent state(s)/republics of Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea along with a commitment from NATO and Ukraine to never seek membership of said organisation. These regions will serve as a new buffer zone between NATO and Russia. The US has been publicly seeking exploration rights in remaining Ukranian territories with EU Agri conglomerates, there is probably enough value in that to send 'UN backed' peacekeepers into the rest of Ukraine while this gets scaled up.

Is there any other way this can go?

Tends to be the case. The likes of gavin pepper etc always tag Elon and musk looking for attention. Those type of people would support Putin because he's anti woke until one of their family members is thrown off a balcony for disagreeing with something.

Pigeon holers love to pigeon hole? Didn't work out well for GW Bush, you're either with us or against us.

Sometimes you have just got to concede that occasionally/now-and-again the other side have some good policies.

Well I myself and plenty of people I know would have concerns over uncontrolled immigration into Ireland but would absolutely be anti trump and pro Zelensky and pro European defence force containing Russia in its current recognised land mass.

So where does that fit in?

A profoundly shocking, distressing, disturbing evening. Checks and balances? RIP America.

Republicans being asked who started the war…. they can't even answer that question without deflecting.

It's a cult, plain and simple. If Trump told them the earth is flat, they would tow the line.

Seeing a US Spokesman saying Zelenskyy 'acted the fool', and seeing Marco Rubio on a CNN interview attacking Zelenskyy, blaming him, demanding an apology. This is coordinated.

I notice some right wing commentators and politicians in the UK have condemned Trump this evening.

Farage is 100% a Russian asset though. It's long been rumoured that he and his Brexit Party / Reform mates have some very dodgy links to Russian money.

Every single one of these people are still there. Marco Rubio even got promoted.

I went to a conservative forum to try and understand how people could support Trump's actions today

Besides the extraordinary amount of ignorance on display, the key theme was that they thought Zelensky "wants war", and wants "American boots on the ground" and that Trump just wants peace

Okay but Trump has threatened to annex or invade Greenland, Panama, Canada

Their "best" rationalisations are completely contradictory. They are reaching the very end of what's possible to reason

Even Boards most pro-Trump and pro-Putin posters are struggling with this and these are mental gymnasts of the highest order

People are just flabberghasted, crazy crazy stuff.

In terms of Martin's visit and the prospect for a scene - it actually is a real prospect because Ireland has the single biggest trade surplus with the US in Europe and with Lutnik whispering in Trump's ear that won't go without comment.

Micheál Martin has a very delicate path here. He has to try and explain to Trump the reality of trade but the figures are not in our favour (to say the least) with Trump.

Most of what we export back to the US is pharmaceuticals and Trump and Lutnik hate that more than anything else. American companies exporting back to the US from a foreign jurisdiction.

My advice is keep it to the blarney and try avoid trade discussion in public. That probably won't be possible.

Trump is teeing up a nuclear war where himself and Putin obliterate Europe. Should be good craic.
