    What did it say…

    "

    Dear Mick,

We cordially welcome the Ruler of the Island of Ireland, land of the scholars and fairies, and we look forward to signing a deal to share all the minerals retrieved from the bottom of the rainbow in return for bringing lasting peace and prosperity to Darby O'Gill and all the little people…….

    Good post back attacha👍

Yes indeed- about mid last week I posted a few thoughts here trying to get people to lift their heads up and try not get sucked into the hourly no less daily output from Trump - it’s gonna be a long 4 years (or indeed more) if we “react” to everything - time is not Trumps friend - and I don’t mean about his age or health - the more we listen and observe , the more we’ll see the patterns emerging which will help us to understand where he’s going, what will please him, what will distract him etc -whilst he’s a hard person to pin down, he’s not impossible to figure out and “chaos” is probably his current path- but even he knows that can’t last for long - he will certainly “surprise” us- but I think the first 3-5 months of his term will allow us to get the measure on where he’s going - and ultimately then the impact on world economies etc. - and will help us then to “adjust” and also respond appropriately rather than “react” .

The economy will need reassurance the most and he’ll need to bring back stability - a new stability perhaps but a stability nevertheless - businesses can’t plan ahead in chaos - they need some stability to hang their future plans onto- so for me, that’s the thing that’s keeping hope going - he can’t wreck the European economy without damaging his own - he can’t wreck European companies without impacting American companies - economies are just too intertwined these days. I get the “chaos” he’s doing right now- but in my book this should wind down somewhat over time - otherwise America will start hurting to the degree that the citizens will fight back- we’re just not there yet.

According to RTE and it's guest, the deal between Trump and Zelenskyy is that the US will get 50% of the mineral derivatives and will provide something to Ukraine which will be helpful in the way of non-military protection, say a form of partnership - which would deter a party [who had malice aforethought towards Ukraine] to consider a change of course/policy.

We'll have to wait for more trickledown information from a "NO B/S" source to find out if both "partners" consider there's a undeniable done deal, something a lapse of memory [did I say that?] wont brush off.

Love your “carry on” reference - very English very apt 😀

Seek first to understand- then to be understood - I think that’s essentially what these leaders are doing for now- trying to get behind the sensationalist posts on Trumps social media and figure out just what will satisfy the crying baby effigy that is Trump - he can’t be ignored but they’re on a quest to soothe him - I think that’s the best policy for now - not appease- that’s a spoilt child - soothe- a lot more subtle

That can only be a good thing in terms of the American people ultimately getting rid of this nut job you’d think?

If the economy gets to crisis point , Shirley this means game over and Democrats and whatever sane Republicans are left join forces and boot him out?

There is no 'vote of confidence in the government' mechanism that can topple a government like in the UK or IRL parliament, so getting sane Republicans on your side doesn't make any difference. Death, or impeachment/impairment as covered by the 25th Amendment is the only realistic way.

Impeachment was on my mind alright - but that’s just going to bring civil war given MAGAs reactions to date- mass rioting at least - maybe block voting against any of his proposals or something but even then, it hasn’t stopped the chaos - even the courts and laws are probably tied up in legal knots

Yes. Not intentional but I did notice it.

Kenneth Williams might have been a better choice than Mandelson..

If they get the better of Trump then the Magaturds will be at sixes and sevens.

    All for meeting with KC?

I remember once when we spent the afternoon smoking and walking around town just to avoid his entourage.

Ridiculously easily bought.(first time I actually laughed outloud at the TV in years)

    (Was it staged?)

    This isn’t looking so good

French president Emmanuel Macron has been speaking to the media in the last few minutes, as he concludes his visit to Portugal with a joint press conference with the country’s prime minister Luís Montenegro.

Macron was asked about US president Donald Trumpand the prospect of US tariffs on the EU.

He said that he raised this issue with Trump during his meeting earlier this week, but was left “with very little hope” that the issue could be resolved.

Necessity (and a determination that America won’t win) is the mother of invention - a nice little story of a pizza place moving to all Canadian ingredients where possible - more of this please - the sooner America suffers the sooner it wakes up

If he runs the US economy into the ground that is probably good news overall.

I thought the reason it didn't happen last time was because he was able to increase the deficit.

That is his aim now too.(the "repubs are too frit to object but if their voters are restive who knows)

I think so to be honest..

The further reaches of the GOP finally have the ability to do all the things that they have been talking about for years.

As the American public starts to see the true impacts of the stuff the GOP has been banging on about doing for years , they are going to turn hard against them.

When they actually see the effect of gutting the Federal Government , of shutting down the Department of Education , of removing what little environmental and safety oversight remains - They are not going to like what they see.

Looking back to post January 6th for example - The thing that brought the likes of Linsey Graham etc. back onside was the realisation that the base hadn't abandoned him.

The rally attending loons will never leave him , but there is a big chunk that can and likely will be influenced by the impact of the crazy that is happening right now.

If they shift , watch everyone turn on Trump - They'll blame everyone around him first and his cabinet will be a bloodbath , but it will get to him eventually

It’s funny- right now “hope” for a scenario playing out like you’ve mentioned is probably all we have - it’s a wake up call to the world in fairness if just how easy the equilibrium can change - I guess we’re not as different to some South American dictatorships or North Korea as we’d like to think - democracy as we know it is indeed a fragile thing

I read an article about the planned "Fort Knox" visit and the suggestion that he might pull a fast one.

Today - The 8100 tonnes of gold in Fort Knox is valued on the US Treasury books at $42/oz but the retail market has Gold at ~$2800 per ounce at present.

Trump might use the visit to the repository to announce a revaluation of the Gold Reserve which if he went to full market value would add the guts of $1T to the Treasuries balance sheet.

Roosevelt did this before in 1946/ or 47 when be upped the Treasury valuation by about $5/oz. and he won a challenge to that move in the Supreme Court , so current SCOTUS has precedent air-cover to let Trump do whatever he wants

He could then use that for all kinds of purposes - One theory being be sets up a "US Strategic Bitcoin reserve" which of course all the people that funded his campaign and those that have been buying up his bullsh!t meme-coin would just love.

Bitcoin lost all the Trump gains and then some more looks like 20% down

    Bros be angry

Gee , thanks for the good news.I wonder are there other countries that could apply to?

Oh,doesn't US's "credit rating" already factor that in?

Dodds resigns as minister for foreign aid over aid budget cuts - you would think she’d hang in there and put her support behind her prime minister - I mean FFS the world knows that it’s Trump calling the shots right now - moaning about it and making it all about you is not really the way to roll right now- she’s just giving more ammo to the conservatives

It has tanked in recent weeks for sure - But imagine what the sudden purchase of a half a trillion dollars or whatever of Bitcoin would do to the price , let alone the added "value" of the US Treasury giving it the stamp of approval by setting up a reserve.

Somebody will make serious bank on that move..

Germany and Ireland make up the bulk of the EU's trade surplus with the US.

    We have big problems coming.

Firstly, we are going to come under pressure from other countries in Europe who will be naturally angered at taking a hit with tariffs due in large part to Ireland's trade surplus with the US. They are going to want answers.

Secondly, the tariff issue becomes even more acute for us if the UK avoids the tariffs. That puts us at an immediate disadvantage with the UK for the manufacture of goods for export to the US especially pharmaceuticals. Companies will surely switch manufacturing from here to existing facilitates in the UK to avoid the tariffs which could cost jobs and significant tax income for the government.

To say it doesn't look good is the understatement of the year.

Terrifying. CFTrump trying to be creative with financing. Of course it's not Trump, it's his evil gnomes (imo Trump's worst advisor, Larry Kudlow, might be all over this.) But still, doing creative stuff with a gold reserve bespeaks libertarian m*sturbation all over Treasury. What next, a bitcoin-backed USD? Terrifying.

Ah yes , the old "Ireland is going to be pressured by the rest of Europe" schtick…

Will this be before or after the pressure you told us Ireland was in for from the rest of the EU for Brexit???

What existing manufacturing facilities do you imagine are sitting idle in the UK magically waiting for all the Irish Production volume to move to overnight??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,123 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

If you are the French President or that of many other EU countries and your country has a trade deficit with the US you might be a bit miffed as to why you would be the victim of tariffs in the first place.

Then your attention might turn to a small country that engages in tax skullduggery that allows it to run the single biggest trade surplus in the whole EU ahead of Germany and rakes in massive budget surpluses.

You'd be a bit upset about this, would you not?

You've been spouting this much for a decade. I think we'll be fine.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

You've been banging this drum about Ireland getting isolated and pressured by the rest of Europe for the better part of a decade at this stage and there has yet to be a single shred of evidence of anything of the sort actually happening.

What pressure do you imagine they might try to exert on Ireland that might assist them in a tariff war?

Get us to stop manufacturing Viagra???

Well, whoulda thought CFTrump's name would have been in the recently released Epstein flight logs. Uhuh.

Note: just a name on a log, nothing to see here. Apparently just the start of a much larger release.

The performance with the folders was bizarre. Anything relevant is likely blacked out. And in relation to Trump, we already know some of his criminal behavior and apparently his fans simply don't care. The history books on this are not gonna reflect well on his fan base.

And after voting in the Democrats they'll forget how shìt it all was and vote in the republicans again. The place is a joke. At the very least they need a substantial 3rd party and a ban on corporate lobbying/funding

It is hilarious that you think other EU countries would tear up the entire concept of EU solidarity because the US President is a raging loon who doesn't understand international trade.

What exactly is it you think we could possibly come under pressure to do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭McFly85

So we’re back to the EU undermining the entire union on the basis of the decision of a fickle madman? Ok so.
