Which makes redundant every other game on game pass because everyone will now be playing Balatro.

I finished it and the DLC recently as well and have to wonder why games like this and Hollow Knight are called Metroidvanias. Surely there's another genre that suits what they really are: spike avoidance simulators.

    Really good game though.

Was looking through old YouTube favourites list and came across the last boss music for Crimson Shroud and now I can't stop thinking about it.

I know the 3DS Guild games were a vehicle for developers to try out game ideas that probably wouldn't be commercially successful or viable but I'd absolutely kill for a 40+ hour follow up to Crimson Shroud. Keep the visual style, get Matsuno to write the story and Hitoshi Sakimoto on the Soundtrack. It will fail miserably but would be my perfect game.

Yahtzee's Citizen Sleeper 2 review absolutely destroyed me, never thought I'd see the day one of his videos would bring up that kind of emotion.

It does contain spoilers though so beware. I didn't mind spoilers as I wasn't intending playing it since the first game left a sour taste in my mouth by crashing and corrupting my save and losing all my progress quite close to the end. I know I was enjoying it before then but that's literally all I remember about it now. After that review I think I might have to play the sequel now though.

Been playing DQ3 HD 2D since release and while it's a fun RPG it felt a little quaint. I was thinking that it wasn't really deserving of its reputation in Japan.

And today nearly 20 hours in there's a little scene that really surprised me and tugged at the heartstrings. Dragon Quest as a series manages to have little surprises like that and I guess 3 is no different.

Anyway I can really see why they game is so beloved by the japanese and it's certainly deserving of the praise as a game way ahead of its time.

Just finished playing Unmetal and Thank Goodness You're Here. Two of the funniest games I've ever played. Absolutely loved them both.

Unmetal was such a perfect parody of MGS and its bonkersness. Brilliantly, it mercilessly ripped the piss out of it but it remained a fun game to play that didn't overstay it's welcome. The humour was on point.

Thank Goodness You're Here was absolutely demented and had me laughing non-stop. The writing and humour were top drawer. I'd love to experience playing it for the first time again. Amazing. For the joy and belly laughs it gave me, it was one of the best games I've played in a long time.

With Monolith closing and GoG selling the FEAR games for a few euro I decided to pick them up for some nostalgia. I really enjoyed the first game when it came out and as someone that was inhaling every Tartan Asian Extreme video at the time, the blend of shooting and jump scares really appealed to me even though the whole thing was really really dumb.

I played a little of the expansion which nicely places you into the action almost right away. The combat is still brilliantly kinetic and the enemies are a joy to fight. A lot has been said about the AI which is a standout but I also think the reactivity of the environment adds a lot and is something I'd love to see more fps games do. As bullets are flying and the environment is getting torn up it throws up a load of particle and smoke effects that can get so crazy that often you have to wait for the smoke to clear or move position as your visibility is so limited. It really adds a dynamism to the gunfights.

Just a heads up that the FEAR games on PC take a bit of fiddling to get running in 60fps with a modern resolution.

Anyone excited about Solasta 2? BG 3.5 they say

Haven't felt the urge to go back to Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, so going to dip out and try my first ever Monster Hunter game this evening. Never played any of the previous so know very little of what to expect, but going in blind has served me well with other games before so let's see what happens.

It took me three attempts at three different games (Tri, World and Rise) and a lockdown to finally ‘get’ Monster Hunter. It’s arcane, finicky and very particular… but Rise was the one where it all came together for me, and I put well over a hundred hours into it once that magic finally clicked. So it is a weird and often offputting series, and I believe Wild’s campaign is a glorified tutorial for the real game that begins after. But stick with it for a while anyway, as it’s a series that will either click or not.

I will say to do some basic research on the weapon types before committing and try a couple of options before settling. It’s a a BIG decision to settle on a weapon type in a MH game as they’re really complex and specific, and will radically impact the way you play. And going by everything I’ve seen they’re all viable and appealing to different types of player. After some trial & error the hunting horn turned out to be the weapon for me.

Yeah the Kinda Funny Gamescast talked about how intimidating the menus can seem at first and getting a lot of the systems down. They also spoke about what weapons they use like it's a pretty big choice so I figured you kind of have to pick one weapon or weapon type and stick with it. One of the guys (Andy) said he uses the Switch Axe, so I might just go for it, but maybe I'll check out a video or two running through the different options, see what appeals to me.

Yeah the main gameplay loop is effectively using materials from your hunts to upgrade your particular weapon (and armour) for harder hunts. The upgrade tree is massive and complex so it’s a big decision in that sense. But even on a basic mechanical basis they’re all really different. Some have players leaping around in the air like Bayonetta, others have switchable forms etc… The hunting horn is a big old heavy weapon that also acts as a musical instrument providing status buffs. It’s just a very complex game mechanically in that sense. I know the new one offers the option to have a second weapon load out with you on hunts, but learning another one is like learning a whole other game so I don’t think it’s something I’ll be availing of too often 😅

Enjoy. It's an amazing series if you can get into it. My pre order copy just arrived. Nice Lenticular sleeve.

Was surprised to not find a dedicated thread for wilds in the forum. There was a quite a few folks here playing World if I recall.

Sword and Shield is a good shout for starters. Decent damage once you get a few combos down and pretty mobile. Greatsword is good for big damage, but not very mobile and you really need to get a few hits in , reposition and go again

I was looking at FEAR the other day thinking the same. On a bit of a FPS nostalgia run at the moment and looking for something else to dig into. I've been through the two newish Wolfenstein games, 3 resistance, all 5 gears, and doom 3.

Crysis, fear and singularity are potentially on the cards.

Ive also started system shock remake this week which is kinda new and old at the same time. Almost finished the first medical area. I just got to an elevator that will take me up to research. I wasn't sure if I actually have to clear the first area fully before I can move on so I went exploring a little and got swarmed by loads of enemies and died.

Gameplay deepdive f soon to be released Atomfall. Looks really interesting but I need to see more of the combat AI in action, looks flaky.

Would rather this information in an article than a YouTube video in a monotone voice (skip to the last five-ten mins for a summary), but Jobst to his credit put in the work. Dismantles one of Elon’s Musk repeated lies - or, in its most generous interpretation, wild overexaggeration - about his Quake prowess by actually digging into what happened.

The world’s richest man, who has been given the unprecedented power to dismantle a major nation’s federal operations to punish the working class, is such a pathetic, attention-craving weirdo that he pathologically lies in a desperate bid for ‘gamer cred’ and internet points. Astonishing.

I played CoD Warzone for the first time in months today and did not have a good time. It feels like the "Time to Kill" (a core mechanic in the game) is far too long now and this disadvantages people who are crap like me. Perhaps an example of Devs LiStEnInG tO tHe CoMmUnItY - when is fact its the vocal minority. In saying all this I am looking forward to giving Verdansk a go later in the month.

Turtles cowabunga edition added to ps plus, all the turtles games from my childhood, straight to the Nes game.....3 minutes later..... Uninstall! I know it was a tough game but man it's just unfair. Some cracking games in the collection though.

I beat it a couple of months ago. Used the excellent you can beat videogame YouTube channel for hints but even with help it's super mean.

The funny thing about that game is that it was Konamis biggest hit by far for years. Konami were pumping out some of the best games of all time and every time they didn't sell TMNT numbers the execs would ask them why they didn't make a game as good as TMNT, which all the coders knew was a rushed out the door mediocre games that barely worked.

Suikoden 1+2 remake is out tomorrow.

I'll be here if you are wondering where to direct your apologies to me for giving me grief for saying Suikoden 2 was better than FF7 and arguably the best RPG on the PS1.

It's wild to think that I had that game as a kid and whilst it was only maybe 3 hours long (?), I probably never got near the final third of it - AND they had the insane swimming level so early in the game that routinely wiped you out.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Its about 45 to an hour long. Most games of the era were but had to be challenging so they lasted longer.

The swimming section in TMNT is a bit like the turbo tunnel in battletoads. People hype up the difficulty and while it's bad, both games get waaaaay worse later on! TMNT you need to farm for a certain type of weapon otherwise you aren't making it past the last few stages and the final boss, who has a ohko move.

I remember being lost in the streets a fair bit and getting to outside the technodrome unless I have the games mixed up. I had it on PC. Is it the exact same game on NES? The swimming level was tough but seriously satisfying to get through. I did enjoy it even if I didn't complete. Must give it play this evening.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

That's the game, was made for NES but got conversions to a lot of European home computers and PC. If you got outside the technodrome you were pretty close to the end (although the levels in the technodrome are horrible). There's a lot of purely optional stages in the over world areas that just drain your life and don't give you any rewards.

Yikes. Well there you go, it felt longer to me but thats why.

The horror when you lost Donatello made that game way harder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,031 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Don't forget, you just need to walk over the gap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,244 ✭✭✭BenK

That NES TMNT game was one of the most satisfying games I've ever finished. I was 8 when I played it but it really sticks in my mind. I specifically remember going to my mother complaining in frustration when doing the swimming level as I just wasn't able to get through it.

It was only years later that I found out the general consensus of how diffcult the game was. I would've gone easier on my 8 year old self if I'd known!

The turtle strengths and weaknesses make no sense. Donatello has the best range and does the most damage. Leonardo has decent range but his lack of damage makes him useless a few stages into the game and Michelangelo is a total dud, with Leonardo's lack of damage paired with awful range.

It means Donatello is the only really viable turtle to use for most of the game with Raphael being a decent replacement, he does the same damage and makes up for range with decently sized hot boxes on his weapon.

When you get to the very end of the game you can fill up Leonardo and mikes sub weapon with the scroll which makes them decent enough but you can do that with Don and Raphael as well.

Just rolled credits on AC7, very enjoyable. Storyline is mad as a bag of cats, and you only get half of it because they start explaining stuff right in the middle of a huge dog fight, but the action is great.

    Thanks for the recommendation retro
