I can’t stand Benn. Has he ever fought at British title level standard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,229 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

he’s fought nobody relevant and never fought for a title, his last fight against Dobson was poor.

Press conference nunber two today was quite entertaining

It's a shame the Irish media have no time for this fight at all. Can't really think of a bigger all Irish fight in my lifetime but such a lack of buzz around it.

main stream media is all about making money and talking about boxing isn’t generating revenue sadly

is it really that big? Neither man has done anything near significant on the world stage. So it’s not got that real talent level. Donovan still has not got past domestic level yet, and Crocker is not too far ahead either

There is plenty Irish social media commentary, but we’d hardly expect RTE/Virgin to be all over it

It's a world title eliminator between two Irish fighters. They really don't come up often if ever. Can you name me a bigger all Irish fight?

If it's not the Olympics or Katie Taylor the Irish media don't want to know which is a shame given it's one of our most successful sports on the world stage.

It’s a nice fight for local Irish people. I get this, but it’s hardly big time boxing; you’re not gonna’ get too much mainstream media interest. Neither fighter known outside of boxing circles.

And I think we really exaggerate our boxing prowess on the world stage. Who have we got that is truly world-class? World is full a hype and exaggeration.

Its the Irish people that don't want to know.

The Media gives what people soak up.

The likes of Off the Ball wont touch boxing unless it's Katie Taylor or Olympics.

Even with the Andy Lee connection they never really previewed big fights like Fury v Usyk.

second captains had andy on to talk about Parker and Donovan last week.

Barry McGuigan, Steve Collins and Bernard Dunne were all very popular. They are the ones that would stand out the most in my memory, there may have been others I'm forgetting about.

Wayne McCollough wasn't just as popular because most of his fights were in the US and if they were on over here they were like 1am so it'd be serious boxing fans only watching them.

I think the personality of the fighter and his promotion team are hugely important aspects in drawing a big fan base.

I would have said Wayne had a good following.

Mainly because of his Olympics bouts.

Long time ago now since those names were active.

Realistically there's probably never really been a recovery since the whole MTK media ban. Think a lot of outlets are still hesitant to cover boxing really.

Not so much convinced at all it's due to lack of buy in from the public tbh. I think there'd be a lot of interest if fights like tonight were properly pushed. Has all the ingredients really.

It's all relative really but id say our achievements in a proper global sport in boxing would fairly easily outweigh our achievements in a sport like rugby where we struggle to finish within the top 8 of a 12 team tournament every 4 years.

As genuine global sports go, I'd suggest boxing is probably our most successful along with golf.

Well as I said the handler/promoter has to do his job. If you have a lad with a personality and it's properly promoted you are off and running and the sky is the limit.

Kurt Walker in an entertaining bout there with Leon Woodstock.

Of course, if it's entertaining, that means he got hit plenty too. I feel he's a little to easy to hit with right hands.

It could be that with a big crowd there he wanted to entertain, but from a longterm viewpoint he needs work on his defense.

Really looking forward to the main event.

While I expect Donovan to win, if he's as hesitant to let his hands go as he was against Ritson, it could cost him, as Crocker is bound to take great energy from the crowd.

However, if he boxes to his capabilities, I think Donovan wins clearly on points or maybe even a late stoppage.

McCrory very little to offer here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,679 ✭✭✭✭walshb

my goodness.. lil harsh on Paddy. Punch was only very very fractionally late

Ok, maybe bit late.. but he was so in the moment

I also think head use by Paddy wasn’t intentional

In my opinion, Crocker was looking for a way out from a few rounds out.

He kept complaining and the ref kept falling for it.

    It was a con act.

However, the final punch was well after the bell and he can't complain about that.

Either way Boots Ennis hammers both lads at the same time..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭cudsy1

That was fantastic drama. Id tend to agree, crocker was doing the boxing equivalent of a soccer dive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭cudsy1

I wonder is crocker embarrassed. He'll certainly have a sore face in the week ahead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,196 ✭✭✭selectamatic

The elbow earlier on and then the shot after the bell at the end were poor.

The clashing of heads should have seen Crocker warned too imo I don't think he received a single warning from the ref.

The last punch was a foul. But Crocker was looking a way out. The referee was very poor, didn't stamp his authority at all.

Hugely disappointing. Donovan was one round away from a big finish IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,236 ✭✭✭newhouse87

Crocker Leaning in with head to0. Was 100% looking for way out. Hometown ref tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭Choochtown

Commentators claiming Donovan knew he'd hit after the bell because he'd turned away.

The reason he turned away was because he was heading to a NEUTRAL corner (not his own). That's not the actions of someone who has knowingly knocked someone down after the bell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭Choochtown

    Agree with that.

He couldn't see out of his left eye.

Donovan's disqualification was Crocker's only way out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,273 ✭✭✭✭normanoffside

bit of a Golota performance from Donovan. He was by far the better boxer and should have been more disciplined. Crocker was definitely looking for a way out but Paddy gave him one.

Crocker spent 3-4 rounds complaining and it was because he was being outclassed. Paddy schooled him and Crocker knows that. Paddy should have been much more wide to what was going on, he was a level of two above him and if they meet again (with neutral ref) then I would expect Paddy to stop him within 8 rds.
