You'd be surprised the amount of People I say this to and are oblivious to the fact that Motorcycle tyres need to be changed around 5 - 6 years regardless of thread.

In the pic below is where you will see the date code on most if not all tyres and how to find it. These tyres are on my 2007 Deauville 700. As you can see in the pics, after dot and right after VED is the date code.

The front tyre says 3119, 31 being the week of manufacturer and 19 being the year.

The rear tyre also shows 3119. So coming up to the 6th year for both.

I'm going to get new tyres, anyone got any recommendations ? the old Tyres are Bridgestone

    Front Tyre

bridgestones are usually a harder wearing tyre like the T32 etc for "touring". but the Michelin pilot road 5 etc are very good, a lot softer, more thread, but still wear well. on such a heavy bike id go for the bridgestone T32 or similar.

I meant you'd be surprised how many I say it to and they didn't realise.

Anyway, I'd rather spend a few quit on good tyres rather than have it in the back of my mind.

270 Euro on Eiretyres. I was expecting more.

I got a Bike Mechanic 7 mins down the road, he'll swap them for me, handy. I'll get him to check the bike over for any bits that need to be done while he has it.

Last owner probably didn't ride it much, there's 43,958 miles on it now.

Are Bridgestone still doing that crap of preventing their dealers from repairing punctures?

I'd avoid them for that reason alone

'need' is a bit strong, it's 'advised'. There are so many factors affecting tyre life that time alone is a poor metric (same thing said about oil too).

Storage conditions (both new and used) is a big factor : outside, inside, covered/not, cold/warm, daylight/darkness. The list goes on.

Even on cars, at my last NCT the guy said "you know about the tyres age, they're in good condition, but a bit old, right ?" I replied "Yes, I'm aware".

And off I go with a new NCT.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I don't think the NCT is bothered about the age of tyres ? cars have 4 tyres, so it's more important for riders to have good healthy tyres.

It's like this, if the manufacturers recommend 5-6 years before replacement then I'm happy to go along with that because at the end of the day it's the wet performance that can suffer the most and it's the tyres that do all the work to keep you stuck to the road so if it means paying for a tyre or two I think it's worth it rather than come off with God knows what consequence.
