CIF chap is 100% right that public infrastructure is not capable of that level of building required.

As Irish Water stated last week, the max connections they can do in a year is only 35K!

It would be nice to know how many gaffs the ESB can wire up too.

A few nice highrise apartments might help.

Well Rory the money is going to the private sector for housing because the govt (every single govt for the last 15 years) have made damn sure they don't hire men and guess what gender construction workers are.

We could spend taxes on hiring and training construction workers directly and employ them exactly the same way as teachers and nurses (although obviously they wouldn't have anywhere near the same holidays. so you might get a bit more work out of them).

Elected local councilors cant do **** compared to the un-elected permanent and untouchable staff within the county council bureaucracy.

"Thats all we have time for" because the online revolution never happened in RTE land.

Honestly I rarely if ever watch TV for this exact reason. I learned sod all during this show, everyone involved got less than 2 mins each and the cost of the whole thing is astronomical.

Its all make up, lighting, live studio audience, pre recorded footage and near zero substance.

Ffs. Watching this on RTE 1+1. Woman with 4 kids. Where's the Dad/Dad's? The level of entitlement of some people. What are you doing having any kid, never mind 4 if you can't afford to look after them? Did she stop at any point, or does she think she's entitled to more, the more she sprouts?

The 2nd lady I have sympathy for, absolutely.

Watched the program on +1 after all!

Not what I initially thought it was going to be about, thought it was going be more about homeless hub itself, and similar hubs.

Did anyone else like myself not paying attention to the state and level of homeless in country, get a feeling of dire straits the country is in from the program. With no concrete solutions offered by the people who showed up to the show.

@Red Silurian makes a good point in the politics forum above.

Here's a crazy crazy thought, instead of judging people for wanting to have kids why not support them? If the Dad/Dads aren't mentioned maybe there's a very good personal reason for that you clearly aren't considering.

News this morning that the national gallery spent €120k on a scanner they can't use or the OPW throwing money at security huts and bike sheds, perhaps that money could be better spent on housing our population, enabling them to have kids who in turn will power our economy in the future

Yeah no definitely, those family hubs meant to be a temporary solution for a few weeks or months and 4 years some families are reportedly spending in them

It all comes down to housing of course and how this government prioritises landlords, developers and banks over the common good but the housing minister was too busy planning his St Patrick's weekend trip abroad

Good news from last weeks show!

    • A mother living in Ireland's largest homeless family hub with her young son has secured a home following an appeal which was aired on RTÉ's Upfront with Katie Hannon programme.
    • Following Ms Coffey’s latest appearance on Upfront, her case was raised in the Dáil last Tuesday, where Taoiseach Micheál Martin acknowledged that it was "not acceptable that so many people in our society are in emergency housing accommodation, particularly children."

It show's even with politicians not showing up to the show, it can at least make effective changes? Why she had to wait so long after her first appeal last year is another thing.

I couldn't find a thread for BBC Panorama and another interesting program, tonight 20:30 BBC 1 NI!

Trump, Ukraine and Europe on the Edge
    Panorama

The war in Ukraine is reaching a decisive point. After three years of fighting, Donald Trump is trying to break the deadlock by speaking directly to Vladimir Putin and setting up talks. But Ukraine and Europe appear to be on the sidelines. With the US refusing to commit ground troops, the pressure will be on Europe to keep the peace, if there is a deal. Allan Little speaks to the UK prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and other leading politicians at this historic moment for the future security of Europe. ~~ https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0028dn6

Till later when I find out what 'Upfront' is about tonight!

On #RTÉUpFront, we debate if the Government's position on Israel and Ukraine is putting Ireland's national interest at risk. Joining Katie Hannon to discuss are Neale Richmond (FG), Lynn Boylan (SF), Matt Cooper and Alan Shatter. Watch at 10.35pm

Interesting Panel at least someone in Government is on it!

Does Alan Shatter ever **** up?

Just looking at the circa 2 dozen audience members. A far cry from the much bigger audience from previous “audience participation” current affairs programmes like Questions & Answers or programmes from other jurisdictions such as Question Time.

Female in the audience at the start wants Michael Martin to defend our national values on St Patrick's Day because so many Americans can't express their sexuality.

You have to wonder what planet is this person on?

Alan Shitter asked about israeli occupied territories and he doesn't answer just jumps back to October 7th.

Katie is terrible at handling this.

Looks like so many Irish politicians have adopted the American thing of wearing a flag/symbol on their suit.

SF are just absolute nutters when it comes to Gaza

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,405 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

The notion that any Taoiseach would bring up Gaza to an American president is for the birds. Irish people only care about our own economic interests, as is perfectly normal. Apart from a hardcore group who want to see Multinational companies out of the country for ideological reasons.

Yeah, the way they have been bombing it, killing kids and preventing food and medicine in is terrible. Sinn Fein should be changed with war crimes.

It's nuts, a bill that will do so much harm to Ireland is even up for debate

Alan Shatter is a disgrace. I thought he was treated badly when he had to resign over a decade ago. But, it was a blessing in disguise watching this.
