You never know. Stranger things have happened

Must be very tough on the frontlines, knowing that maybe some sort of truce or peace is possibly in the works, but having to fight and risk their lives so close to it

There has been three MAJOR UNINTENDENCE consequences of the war that Putin will not be happy with

    (1) Sweden and Finland Joining NATO

    (2) the EU coming together as a more cohesive grouping with more coordination , more networking, more joined up thinking , etc, etc, mostly as a result of The US /Trump behaviour

    (3) even though there are many, factions / ‘schools of thought/ , political parties/ religions , etc, in UKr and there has been a lot of clashes, civil war type wars over the last 1000 years in the general Ukarnian landmass The ONE THINK THAT THEY ALL WANTED WAS THEIR OWN ‘SOVEREIGN STATE’ called Ukraine. The war has managed to reinforce that desire in the UKr people and that is what IS DRIVING THEM - what a powerful ingredient to have while defending one’s nation

I dont think that's true. Everyone knew what Trump was and what he was capable of long before they voted for him. Saying they wouldn't vote for him now is just letting idiots off the hook. The whole world told them and were told to go and cry you libtards.

I got banned here for saying the Americans are idiots but they just prove it more and more everyday. There was an interview on CNN last night with a senator from Tenessee and he threw out lie after lie. Jake Tapper didn't even try to lay a glove on him, then had a nice chat before signing off. There's zero accountability

600 of the 24 hours that Trump has said that he would end the war in have already been taken up - and counting!!!!!!!! . IMO , Trump is the only man that can explain that ‘apparent discrepancy’

It's a shìt show and we're heading for war in 3 to 5yrs. Quite possibly with the Americans and Russians.

There's a golden opportunity to stop that and it's right now but as usual we'll fcuk it up whilst they try to keep pushing the fantasy of ever increasing economies. Europe is once again about to become the earth's battlefield

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,363 ✭✭✭Field east

Why did the US not just refrain from the U.N. vote - or does it want to DRIVE IT HOME TO ALL AND SUNDRY AND IN THE MOST PUBLIC OF WAYS THAT HE /US IS IN THE POCKET OF THE RUSSIANS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭gw80

Unfortunately I think you are right,

America will still need an enemy, now more than ever, and Trump has turned everything on its head, putin will not hang around he will see he has a small window of opportunity,he will push Trump to turn the american people against Europe, when Americans start loosing their jobs and homes they will be convinced it is outsiders faults and not the Trump administration,at that stage they probably will not have to even convince anyone of anything. Europe will be blamed for some false flag type incident in Ukraine by the peace keeping troops, and they will spin it that Europe is trying to undermine trumps peace plan and that Europe is the aggressor.

Europe will be surrounded by enemies,Russia, Africa, and the middle east will all be subservient to the USA, we will get no help there.

BUT, BUT, BUT, BUT wwere the VAST MAJORITY of tThe Americans 1000% anti Russian in EVERY WAY up to circa two short weeks ago? That on top of the way the US / Trump has been behaving very recently eg VZ being a dictator, Musk ‘ s behaviour re DOUGE, that UN vote , etc, do you not think that a very significant number of those who voted for Trump would not have voted for him if they were aware of the above ????

I am curious what Americans on site have to say about this clown show

especially those who served in military alongside their NATO allies whom did come to americas aid when asked

That’s assuming they not to busy justifying their positions this week to Emperor Musk while reminiscing about the now quaint notions such as “checks and balances”

Strangely, I think the US becoming an ally of Russia actually reduces the risk of WW3 and nuclear wipeout (as weird as that sounds). But we could definitely enter into some form of dystopian Cold War with America effectively being an adversary of all western countries.

I've been following retired general Mark Hertling since the start of this. He would have regular slots on CNN and other news outlets He's pretty ashamed about the whole turn of events.

Scary times. You'd hope the US eats itself from the inside out before they get a chance to push their dangerous shite much further internationally.

More charming developments, this from the guardian:

Vladimir Putin on Monday evening offered to sell Russia’s rare earth minerals to American companies, including those in Russian-occupied Ukraine, further underscoring his message to Donald Trump that there’s profit to be made in Russia.

“We are ready to work with our partners, including the Americans,” Putin said, adding Russia could resume selling aluminium to the US.

“We undoubtedly have, I want to emphasize, significantly more resources of this kind than Ukraine,” the Russian president said.

Putin said that potential rare earth metals exploration deals could also be extended to deposits in territory in eastern Ukraine that Russia occupies after three years of military action.

Earlier on Monday, Trump told reporters in Washington that “major economic development transactions with Russia” would take place. Within two hours of the US president’s statement, Putin chaired an unannounced meeting with his ministers and economic advisers on rare earth metals.

Russia has the world’s fifth-largest reserves of rare earth metals, according to the US Geological Survey data, after China, Brazil, India and Australia

Surely even trumps America couldn't stomach such a deal that is drenched in so much death and horror ? Would companies/brands want to be associated with this “deal” ?

Why not? How much do you think MAGA cares about a country it would struggle to find on a map?

A lot of western companies got badly badly burned in Russia with their assets seized, they be insane to invest again in Russia and I there’s no investors mad enough to pour good money after bad into that black hole, especially if the politics in US can do a complete 180 in 2-4 years which is shorter than typical investment horizon for large projects

Even the Chinese don’t want to invest there and they have centralised control of the purse strings

Actually speaking of Chinese they have been awfully quiet lately

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,819 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

yeah your right. It would involve billions of dollars with of US mining equipment and the russians might just kick the yanks out and take it all.

I'm seeing a lot of his fans just outright ignoring it so I'm pretty sure they will continue to live in a bubble.. You can really see how WW2 could have gone the wrong way.

It’s not Trumps fans who invest tho, they probably wouldn’t even be able to point out Russia on a map to be fair

I’ve been keeping a very close eye on stocks for personal investment reasons

the investment atmosphere in US went from excitement to doom and gloom almost overnight in last month, with investment money running from from US to Europe, and likes of Warren Buffet ringing alarm bells and building up massive cash piles for the Trump crash they are now expecting

The bond markets too haven’t responded at all to Musks performative bullshit about cuts as they realise that he is only fiddling with scraps, if anything things on that front getting worse as all the Trump uncertainty is undoing anything cuts might save them

The whole investment rare minerals thing is an irrelevant sideshow as no one is insane enough to invest in Russia, if anything it shows just how badly Russian economy is hurting that they spend all their time talking about that and not the war elephant in the room (Putin himself said that Ukraine wasn’t even discussed)

And what does Ukraine get in return? A few European peace keepers with no combat experience who are supposed to ensure this never happens again?

Zelensky wouldn't settle for that. Without a meaningful security guarantee the deal is worthless.

The question is how much say does Zelensky have in any of this. With no US weapons it could lose a lot more territory than it already has. At this stage it's about accepting the least bad of many terrible options.

A total betrayal of Ukraine by its allies, and the American population should be judged collectively in voting in Trump a second time, it is a total indictment of their idiotic population, or let's say half of it.

If some form of peacekeeping by Euro forces is to take place - they sure as hell better get training from Ukrainian forces on how to actually fight whilst they are there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 525 ✭✭✭poop emoji

They are, Telegraph just had a podcast on Ukrainians training in UK etc with the training going both ways now

The part with the Danish soldier saying he will teach his children about what he learned from Ukrainians about drones is chilling

Only we in Ireland are oblivious to the wider war brewing in Europe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,880 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Well he does ultimately get to decide whether Ukraine fights on but if he faces a Hobson's choice between carrying on the struggle without American weapons or accepting the 'protection' of some flimsy peacekeeping opreation that Putin is just going to brush aside in a couple of years…he may decide the least bad option is to chuck in the towel now and throw Ukraine on Putin's tender mercies rather than have the country face a long slow bleed out…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,083 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Putin is playing Trump like a fiddle. He's promising something that he will likely not even need to follow through with.

First thing, is it even economically viable to develop these resources? Secondly, who's going to step in to spend the billions to develop the resources, Ukraine's infrastructure is wrecked. Finally, even if a western company was found to put up the capital to get it into production several years down the line. What happens then when Trump is no longer in power? Nothing stopping Putin or a successor from nationalising it.

I am curious to see the details of this so-called peace deal. I'll bet they will be deliberately unacceptable to Ukraine and will be rejected.

When I saw that reported a few days ago, I expected it to get a lot more traction, but it seems to have had as much impact as a fart in the wind.

Hopefully there is a bit more going on behind the scenes though, as this other 'deal' that's in the works, with Russia selling Ukraine's resources to the US, is a disgusting betrayal of Ukraine, in that they feel the circumstances they are now presented with means they have little choice.

Maybe, after the summit in Kyiv earlier this week, the EU were able to convey to Ukraine that there are more options available that what we're privvy too 🤞

Quiet? At least 50 flights between Australia and NZ have had to be diverted because Chinese war ships decided to do live fire exercises right under the main flight paths - not deliberately, you understand. That right on the heels of trying to down an Australian PC3 Orion by dropping flares into it's engines - the second time they have tried this. They have also been doing mock invasion drills against Taiwan.

He's going to be even more ashamed when the US fascists turn the US military on the people.

I'd be amazed if the so called peace deal was anything other than Russia keeping the lands they took and doing a joint deal with Trump to extract the minerals there.
