Hi I’m just wondering if someone can help me, I had my car for sale on done deal and someone came to view it today took it for test drive etc, he wasn’t happy nit picking from the beginning and was also trying to low ball me aswell, he said he wanted to give the car hpi check which was fine, he left and sent me a message saying the car was a write off I said that that’s untrue and I had proof after a heated exchange he went and put my car on done deal telling buyers to beware that the car was a write off, I text him and asked him to take it down as it wasn’t true and he made some very serious threats against me which have been reported to the garda, anyway I have someone else who wants to buy it who has also done a background check and confirms it is not a write off and has even paid a small deposit but he is now saying he won’t buy the car unless the ad is taken down off done deal I’ve reported the ad myself and also had friends do so aswell but the ads still there is there anything else I can do please 🙏

What? "I have someone else who wants to buy it who has also done a background check and confirms it is not a write off and has even paid a small deposit but he is now saying he won’t buy the car unless the ad is taken down off done deal" Makes no sense. If they did a check and the car is OK what difference does the ad make whether it's up or down if they're happy buying the car after giving you a deposit??

No sorry I should have mentioned the first guy who came to see it put the ad up on done deal, it’s the second man who came to see it that paid the deposit did his own background check and was happy until he seen the ad the first man put up

I still don't see how the ad is relevant if the second person did a check and it was OK.

You have someone who paid a deposit and did a check that showed nothing was wrong with the car so how is any of this a problem is beyond me.

It is suspicious that the first intended buyer went out of his way to pay for a false advert on DoneDeal just to screw up your sale.

Then suddenly some other dude who happens to be a car dealer comes along and low balls you…while specifically mentioning the false advert and using it as a bargaining chip. I think you may be right, these two could be in cahoots and are trying to pull a fast one on you.

My advice. Report the false advert and try to get it taken down. Try to figure out what the realistic valuation of your car is and stick to your guns until you get it, and tell these two chancers to 'sling their hooks'.

As regards getting a realistic valuation on your car,

Check out other similar cars on DoneDeal, Adverts, Carzone, Facebook etc. to get a rough ball park and maybe even post your car here (link your DD advert) as some of the posters on boards have extensive motoring industry knowledge and should be able to give you an honest steer.

PS. There's nothing stopping you from getting your own motor history check done and publishing it as part of the advert, just to put would-be buyers minds at ease. Its not uncommon to see it done especially for more valuable cars in adverts.

this is the screenshot of ad put up by this man, didn’t want to put up link as contains personal information, I put it at this price for due to high mileage and wanting a quick sale as I’m moving country in a few weeks, I did do my own background check everything was fine

I went and had a look at it on DoneDeal and the conversation isn't exactly a good look for either of you, I don't think I'd be dealing with you either from the way you interacted with the other person.

Can you put the motor history report on your ad to show that it isn't an insurance write off. Your texts don't make it really clear as just because a car is "driving perfectly" as you said it could still be technically down as a write off. Any potential buyer would want complete peace of mind.

Even the free checker has "27 important records" on this, doesn't mean negative but not great for a 2019 car, would lead to believe that it was in some sort of crash. I'm not paying for a report just to check.

Wow harsh, how would you feel if absolute chancer came to look at your car and insisted that it was a write off I’m sure you wouldn’t be too pleased, as I said I’ve proof see attached

OP having looked at the ad as well with the messages, you never actually say that you have proof it wasn't written off. You just say it's driving fine. And cars can seem fine but be an economic write off, as it it would cost more than the car is worth according the insurance to fix it so they have written it off. You can still choose to repair it yourself & insure it, but it doesn't mean it won't show up as a write off. On Done Deal you can pay for the Greenlight check that is then put on your ad that shows all that history & information and you can point to that when selling it. Otherwise if it's showing up on cartell or other reports that people will naturally do before buying privately, you're going to continue to have problems.

Honestly I wouldn't care especially when there's another offer on the table, I certainly wouldn't go threatening them.

OP, I think you have been given good advice by the two previous posters. Try to get that fake advert taken down and pay for a full motor check yourself and publish it in your advert. Job done.

If there are no problems with your car, €7k seems like great value.

If it has problems you would be best to highlight them upfront…otherwise prepare for no end of grief.

I didn’t threaten him, like seriously I am woman what could I do really I asked for his address as my mother in law is a solicitor and would want to contact regarding his slander of me. You do not see all the messages just what he chose to you to see, he also sent me a video of him shooting off his shot gun, I was home alone with two children at the time and was so petrified I had to take them to a hotel because I was so scared he would come to my home but I suppose that behavior is alright in ur book?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,085 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

This is all sounding very far fetched, your message to them said "ur choice, don't say you weren't warned" this is fairly threatening language.

Anyway if true, hope it all works out, just sell it to the dealer, they won't really care about a fake DoneDeal ad, they're just trying to get a better price.

So you stayed in a hotel over this man's behaviour, I would suggest you let the gardai deal with it from here.

My thoughts too. Nobody should be sending videos like this as part of an exchange for the purchase of a car. An awful situation to be in.

I wonder if these guys are affiliated with the illegal roadside signs offering to buy cars. Offer one price and then look to get it for far less?

He sent you a thratening video of him shooting a gun, which scared you so much you stayed in a hotel?

But didn't report that to gardai? Seems a bit unbelievable tbh.

I don't see that ad on DD anymore so presumably they've removed it, they're normally fairly quick actioning stuff like that. Presumably you can now work away with the genuine buyer.

You've priced that car very competitively so shouldn't be any problems selling it if they start messing around, presumably they won't if they've a deposit down.

100% follow up with the Gardai on the criminal harassment and threats, make a formal statement and give them all the evidence you have if not done so already, get your PULSE reference number from them. I'd forget about any civil slander stuff for now TBH.

Good luck with sale and I hope it all works out for you.

Maybe read the OP, Gardai are involved. All very believable given some of the nut jobs out there.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

This is quite possibly a scam. Not you, the person who viewed your car and is now doing this. No harm to report it to the Gardaí.
