It's the same mentality as the MAGA gang in the US. Slash and burn, make it as uncomfortable as possible for the 'small man', and don't go after the people really riding the system, really doing the damage. The likes of overpaid players, as well as the Glazers who leveraged the club itself when taking it over and who have used it as a personal ATM for decades are untouched, while Mavis who makes the tea and Geoff who cleans the toilets are made feel grateful for a bowl of watery soup and a cut of stake bread, sure it's good enough for them.

I have no love or affinity for United or anyone working there, but fvck Sir Jim and all his fellow travelers, a shower who will strip the club of its remaining assets, fvck the fans and employees, and rodwbofd into the sunset. I love to see United struggle on the field, but t the end of the day there are ordinary working folk getting fvcked here and that's wrong.

The penny pinching suggests the club is in deep financial trouble, yet they have not opted to terminate Alex Ferguson's lucrative club ambassador contract which costs the club far more than £1M.

They have cancelled it. Well it won’t be renewed at the end of the season anyway.

My point was that getting rid of hot lunches and offering bread and water for non playing staff won’t make any difference to Uniteds financial situation in the long term. The only way they sort themselves out is by moving players on, getting players in for less money on less wages or promoting youth players if possible, and doing this well for multiple seasons to get a better league finish and into the CL money.

So these new policies that just make it a worse place to work for average staff come across as incredibly petty, especially when this tighten the belt philosophy doesn’t apply to the executive. They’ve made some decisions that have cost the club millions it didn’t have to.

Do tell, how do they solve the issue of the over paid players and the Glazers? If it's as simple as just "going after them" then surely you have a few ideas without giving too much gray matter to it.

I had understood that it was to be reviewed at the end of the season.

Or maybe Slot is proving that Klopp was underachieving. For me Klopp is closer to Benitez than Pep.

Benitez was a great European manager, taking Liverpool to 2 Champions League finals, but Klopp bettered that. And their league form doesn't remotely translate.

I often argued with my Liverpool supporting mates back in the day that I found Benitez style and mannerisms was never going to translate to sustained success. Whereas Klopp took Liverpool from middle of the road rubbish to 3 x 90 plus point seasons, winning a title along the way, as well as every club competition available to them, and it would have been way more only for the cheating juggernaut that was City.

Some Liverpool fans still hold Benitez in high regard and may disagree, but too me, its not even a competition between the 2. To be honest, if you were to ask me what manager over the last 10/15 years that I want over my side, if given a choice of any, I'd pick Klopp.

Crikey, if ya reckon getting 3 of the top 7 (and 2 of the top 4) ever premier league points totals in history is underachieving, I'd wonder what ya reckon par looks like!

Even the fact that this current flying team only has 1 more point than his team last year — which of course at the time featured an entirely brand new midfield all in their first seasons at the club.

For one to be praised it doesn't mean another has to be knocked.

I've noticed in the last year or so since he came into united that in the media, he is no longer Jim Ratcliffe, or Ratcliffe/Mr Ratcliffe. Its always "Sir" Jim Ratcliffe, or SJR or Big Sir Jim. Was there an edict or something? It seems forced, "you address me by my peoper title, you little b*llix!!!" Etc.

Ferguson never had the same, there was always SAF but people switched between his actual name and using the title. Similar to Kenny Dalglish, rarely hear him called Sir unless they are talking about the stand.

If Slott had to get 95 points to win the league I doubt he would. How many Klopp seasons would comfortably win the league this season? It's an unfair comparison, in any other era Klopp would have 3 or 4 titles to his name. You really think if Klopp only had to get 84 or 85 points he wouldn't have done it multiple times. How many times did Ferguson get over 90 points with United.

I always refer to Kenny Dalglish using his official title

Liverpool are as good as league champions this season but if they lose Salah and VVD there's a possibility there will be a slump with them next season. They are massive shoes to fill and I don't think FSG will spend big money replacing them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,451 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

If any team lost their best players they'd do worse than the previous year. Look what has happened to City, Arsenal dropped off when Saka got injured, Chelsea would be way lower without Palmer and United would be really in a relegation battle if Bruno missed a chunk of games this year.

Where you paying close attention to all mentions of Jim Ratcliffe in the media before he bought into Utd? In my lifetime every time anyone has been given a knighthood they've forever after been referred to as Sir X. Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Trevor Brooking to name just a couple. Plenty of other examples. There's plenty of reason to knock Ratcliffe, no need to invent imaginary edicts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭Dano650

The players you mentioned like Saka are only short term absentees but if Liverpool were to lose both they are massive losses and won't easily be replaced. There's talk of Konate stalling on a new contract. You have to question why they have come to this situation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,952 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Been following cycling for years, he's rarely been referred as "Sir" when talking about the Ineos team, until recently as well. I see he got his knighthood in 2018 but to me it seems that the usage of the title is more pronounced by the media the past year or so.

The forelock-tugging titles and their use is rididulous to me anyway, regardless of club, country or affiliation.

As an Arsenal fan I find it bizarre that people would try to undermine what's looking like a fantastic league campaign for Liverpool. For me they are easily the best team, and in all honesty play the most attractive brand of football in the division too, they fully deserve the league title & are worthy champions. No shame finishing runner sup to them IMO, they're a great team.

I genuinely hoped Arsenal would kick on this year & early on felt they would, but the injuries have killed any real chance of sustained momentum and the confidence that brings, but even had that happened there was no guarantee they'd have topped Liverpool anyway, who will in all likelihood win the league by a significant margin (unless they ease off when the title is more or less won). They've lost one game at the end of the day. Small margins for catching there.

Credit where its due, and as a fan of the game anyone doubting or belittling this team really needs to ask themselves why they watch the game, they're very entertaining to watch, yes they have bad days, all teams do, but have players that can change a game in an instant. I like what Slot has done with them, I actually think their style is more sustainable too which means players don't get flogged (ala Arsenals) and they seem to have better strength in depth too despite the money Arsenal have spent over the last few seasons. Klopp deserves credit for the base, but Slot has reinvented their style & made it more effective. Having Salah fit & available has been huge too, but every top team has at least one superstar & whilst Arsenal have lost theirs Salah has been immense. Very hard not to admire how good a player he really is.

Just hoping Arsenal can stay competitive now next year as I expect City to spend close to a billion to reinforce & think Liverpool will still be the ones to beat, especially if they keep their key players.

Oh I fully agree that the British title system is ridiculous and a relic of the past. The likes of the Daily Mail will always latch onto guys like Ratcliffe and use them and their titles as a way to promote how magnificent the UK is and all the successful business leaders etc etc. Sir Jim, Sir Dave, Sir Alex, none of it matters in the grand scheme.

    I think Konaté is replaceable

I'm not too concerned overall. I imagine it will be a very busy summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭Dano650

If Salah and VVD do go do you think FSG will be willing to spend big money to replace them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,167 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

They have to live with it to a certain extent, contracts are contracts that have been entered into and have to play out.

Fvcking over the tea lady doesn't correct anything though, it's just a show of strength and shows where the loyalties of these INEOS guys are. They'll do the same to the fans before long too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,080 ✭✭✭The Rooster

But it’s not FSG’s money. Like Arsenal and Spurs, the owners don’t put a penny in and don’t take a penny out (although on the Spurs thread, there is talk that ENIC does take money out, so not sure about that one).

The clubs can spend what they earn. No more, no less (well they can lose 5m a year). The key thing is, especially with FFP/PSR, you can only spend it once. Mistakes count, so be careful you are buying the right man.

I’m sure FSG have told the LFC execs, they can spend whatever they like, once they keep within the rules (hence the 100m+ Caicedo bid), so there will definitely be money spent in the summer if VVD and/or Mo don’t sign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,920 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I think they'll have already worked on their list of targets.

Big money for the sake of it isn't their main objective. It's value for money

But I certainly think they'll be spending for the players needed for sure

MacAllister, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch in the same window instead of going all out for a single Bellingham is an example.

None of those players were big money, Szoboszlai maybe, but none were peanuts either.

I think fans get over excited about the transfer fee. I trust these guys to bring in the right players. If that's on a free, £35m or £100m it doesn't really matter as long as there's a strong squad to compete at the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭giveitholly

If they do go then of course they will be replaced, but that doesn't necessarily mean that big money has to be spent. More like the money has to be spent wisely. No point doing a Chelsea or Man utd on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭Dano650

Well if they do go and they want to replace them with the same calibre of player they are probably going to have to spend 50+ million

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,892 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Liverpool should be classy and send a thank you note to Chelsea for outbidding them for Caiceido and Lavia. Bullets dodged especially in Lavia’s case.
