What's 2009 about? Arsenal won the FA Cup three times between 2013/14 and 2017/18.

I don't really want to get into the debate of who signs players, manager or DoF, but he has been there over 5 years now and his best wide attackers are Saka, Martinelli and Nwaneri. All of whom were at the club already when he arrived.

Now you're not going to improve on Saka, he's a superstar player. But Willian, Trossard and Sterling have come in and not really leapt ahead of Martinelli who to me has always shown signs of promise but it's not like he's a Saka on the other wing, he has the potential for sure but not yet hitting the numbers.

You look at West Ham yesterday, a team in 16th having a woeful season.

If Arsenal had players like Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus, how many of those Arsenal players start ahead of them? Saka for sure but after that?

Just seems that there has to be players out there, and not even just the number 9 that's the focus for everyone, wide players too

I agree to a certain extent. I think those 97/98/99 etc point seasons from the Klopp and Pep era are done. The middle of the pack are too strong, in the last few years, clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton etc, the money getting spent at the likes of Forrest now. It just makes it impossible to win week in week out.

But Pep will not want to go out without a whimper. He will be doing his best to win another title before he leaves, and he will be backed heavily. I also think that next year the league will be even harder if Bournemouth and the likes get some European money to back them, that 85 odd points could win a league. And Pep can definitely get a team to that number.

This I agree with. For me the covid season always had a slight asterisk against so there is absolutely no questions around this title win....

Arsenal are not Real Madrid or Chelsea. You won the league 21 years ago and have never won the Champions League. That comparison makes it sound like Arteta not winning something in 5 years isn’t par for the course with Arsenal, when it is.

Liverpool had a much bigger lead than this at this stage of the covid season though?

And covid hadn't even hit for another few weeks until we were in March that year

So if you want to compare this season to 2019/20 Liverpool are nowhere near as likely to win it from here

Arsenal have far more history than Chelsea and are much bigger club. The reason we are not competing is because the owners don't have ambition. Kroenkes are happy with the UCL money and nothing more.

VAR has made refs very lazy . That was an obvious , goal denying , tackle by the arsenal player . Easiest red you'll see

Arsenal only have champions league and they’ll have to play Real Madrid in the next round. Man City have FA Cup but still early days and they might have to play Newcastle/Forest/Aston Villa/Brighton.

Rio Ferdinand for me. I remember him celebrating by jumping out of his seat when Real Madrid won the champions league with Ronaldo, just remember thinking what a muppet.

Arsenal have really pushed the boat on transfer spending the last few years after initially being really frugal when Arteta first came in.

    €110m, €235m, €187m & €170m spent on incoming players in the last 4 seasons.

There was also a massive jump in their wages last year too with wages increasing from €284m to €396m as the current wage bill. That's a 40% increase.

Anyone with half a brain knows Arsenal are as big a club as Chelsea at an absolute minimum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

City might yet win the cup. Less than brilliant sides have won it recently. Arsenal are goosed on the trophy front.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,023 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

There were no questions in 2020 either. Liverpool’s lead was so big by the time Covid arrived that they could have basically stopped playing and still held on to the top spot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,676 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

He knows that. he just likes to bring it up once a month or so to provoke a reaction.

Still, any excuse for us to talk about that incredible dominant season is a good excuse!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,086 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

No. Like this year I'm pretty sure Liverpool were injury ravaged title underdogs up until the week after they were handed the trophy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,921 ✭✭✭✭8-10

    Liverpool absolutely underdogs this season

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cp8nkkwjk39o

Here's some predictions from the summer. Nobody was calling for a title challenge with a new manager. A lot of our fans were down on Slot because they wanted Xabi Alonso or Ruben Amorim and blamed the owners for not going all out for either

It's not over yet, but it's been a remarkable season so far.

I see a certain fanbase is back with their covid season and underdog weekly comments looking for a reaction.

Yep but my comment was in reply to you saying underdogs. I took it as sarcastic but was just agreeing anyway!

It’s no surprise that nobody expected a title challenge from Slot, no new manager who comes into any team in the PL is expected to challenge from the off, especially in an era where that might mean hitting 90+ points.

It’s a great team Klopp left him but he’s done remarkably well considering he hasn’t brought anyone in. Obviously the situation has been helped by Arsenal and City’s form but it’s still beyond what anyone would have expected. I think it’s a testament to the clubs backroom management, they have clear idea of what football they want to play and who can help them achieve it.

Liverpool have been by far the best side in the league and even if arsenal or City were on top form Liverpool would be top as things stand.

But I would also say Liverpool would abolutely have been expected to be top 3 - so City and Arsenal not performing would then make them favourites.

That Slot has come in and seamlessly moved Liverpool on from Klopp when the could have easily been a massive psycological hurdle for them is impressive. And doing so without the key signings people would have said they needed.

    Pre-season odds -
    6/4 City, 7/4 Arsenal, 13/2 Liverpool, 20/1 MUFC, 25/1 Chelsea, 25/1 Spurs, 33/1 Newcastle, 66/1 Villa, 100/1 bar.

I would have never predicted Liverpool being guarnteed at top 3 at the start of the season. Yes the squad was more than good enough, but you just never know how players will react to a new voice, especially when he's replacing a massive presence such as Klopp.

I actually though Liverpool may have been on the road to a slump, such as UTD post Fergie. I just couldn't see how anyone could have came in and taken over so seamlessly from Klopp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭JohnySwan

Ya, if you think of Arsenal post Wenger and Utd post Ferguson. It's been over a decade and Utd still haven't recovered. It's a remarkable achievement to come in and win the title post Klopp, but it also points to the strong position Klopp left this squad in, for that he should also get a lot of credit.

Its one of the oddities of this thread. Liverpool fans are much more accepting of being called/calling themselves favourites in the Liverpool thread but if it happens here in General theres an immediate rush and panic to frantically undersell their own teams quality and amplify the threats posed by City/Arsenal.

Theres a similar timewarp re: TAA, any criticism of him if the Liverpool thread is agreed upon but dare criticise him in General and he gets praised upward.

Its been clear a while Liverpool are overwhelming favourites. Even your pre-season predictions post kinda reflect that as you see how the season unrolled.

No one could have predicted just how badly City could fall apart without Rodri but that happened so that was them utterly knocked outta contention, supposedly leaving Arsenal a clear run, until it became clear they just don't score enough without a striker thus they started stuttering.

Then perhaps the biggest unexpected occurence is Salah radically turning back the clock and probably heading towards a Ballon D'Or this season. (Granted it might be pre-destined for one of the Madrid boys after this years fall out but unless Salah considerably drops his performances it'll just be utterly impossible to overlook him)

As much as it kills Liverpool fans to see posted in the General thread they are the best team in the League this year, and its been clear for a while.

Well, you have to try something, don't you? Limited options otherwise:

    1. Post nothing, sit it out, silence
    2. Post honestly: the current situation is annoying, and they would prefer if Liverpool were worse and Utd were better

So you have option 3, the preferred option, pouring some cold water on the situation. 'It's a weak league*, probably Liverpool's first actual title given the asterisk on the COVID year, and Liverpool fans don't win properly, do they? They don't win like we do anyway, and sure, we are the only fanbase who knows anything about winning.'

    ==========

*I think Liverpool will get a relatively handy title compared to 2019, 2022, and the shadow Pep's City cast over the league generally for years. And this must not be very pleasant for people, as it is hugely surprising for Liverpool fans. Klopp left during the team crashing out last year, followed by a summer of relative inactivity with a new manager from the Dutch league - I forgive rival fans for crossing Liverpool off the list. The era should have been over, and Liverpool should have been dealing with a painful rebuild. Grabbing a league title against preseason expectations must be entirely tilting in that context.

    The glorious mystery of sport!

interesting that Pool are only a point better off than they were at this stage last season (they were top then too).

Arsenal are 5 points worse off, City 15 points worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭FreshG

Can you show me your posts pre-season where you said they would be challenging for the league title? Or is this just pure hindsight stuff trying to get a dig in?

A lot of the stuff I read during the summer from fans of other clubs, and some Liverpool fans too, was about the drop off after Klopp, the unknown of Slot, players such as Endo Elliott Nunez Gravenberch Szobozlai Gakpo Quansah Konate Diaz Trent not being good enough to win a title, Robertson on decline and the ages of Alison, VVD & Salah.

I certainly didn't think that this was possible after last season's tail-off, albeit enhanced by injury, but mainly because of the loss of Klopp and no new first team signings. For my sins, I thought we would we finish ahead of Liverpool as we were on the up at the start of a cycle and them on the way down at the end of their cycle. I definitely didn't think the title was such a foregone conclusion until this weekend. If you were able to ignore all that and predict a comfortable Liverpool title win 8 months ago, then you can hand over this weeks lottery numbers please as you obviously can see very clearly into the future, things nobody else can see.

If you go by the BBC pre-season, then Liverpool were down to finish 3rd, at best

The two people who put them down to finish 2nd both played for Liverpool.

Two of the three people who left them out of the top 4 completely played for Everton.
