I wonder will we ever see a scheme like this in Ireland ?

This would be like having the headshops back only this scheme would allow them to sell real drugs.

If we legalised drugs like Cocaine gangland crime would probably disappear and the taxman would collect Billions in new taxes.

"Officials in Switzerland's capital Bern are considering legalising possession of cocaine, with proposals for a pilot scheme to sell the drug for recreational use in the city.

The scheme is currently being considered by Bern's Governing Council, and would mirror an ongoing trial in the city that allows cannabis to be sold in pharmacies."

I wouldn't like to see a return of the head shops, but wouldn't mind a tightly controlled mechanism for recreational use. Possibly a permit which needs to be renewed yearly following a physical/mental check by your doctor. Controlled quality product and education on the dangers etc. There would still be a black market of course but would really cut the arse out of the drug dealers.

Will it happen in ireland? No, never, not in a million years.

No, gangland crime would not disappear, they would just find something else to get involved in.

    Such as ?

Illegal drugs is the best way to make tons of money if you are a criminal.

Racketeering, prostitution, people trafficking, drugs harder than coke, etc etc.

You think the criminal organizations will just stop ?

Probably not under this government, but Jim O'Callaghan said he doesn't want criminal sanctions for personal use and if a civilised country like Switzerland is considering it, then who knows?

We don't have big criminal gangs who shooting each other over the sale of alcohol.

I'd imagine drugs would go the same way if they became legal.

But we would have a redundant drugs squad who could pursue them for whatever nefarious crimes they become involved with

'legit' cocaine would be a lot safer than the **** people are buying now.

Criminals like Hutch, Gilligan, Kìnahens, etc will always try to break the law to make money. Why make it easier for them selling drugs to consenting adults.

If drugs were legal there wouldn't be the massive profits to be made that there is now.

The main reason criminals are involved in the drugs business is because the profits to be made from importing drugs are off the charts.

Biggest load of bollix I've heard as someone that have had friends die due to drugs in various connected ways and take life of others ,you really have to cop on ,next they'll be saying fent is great .

So hold on. Were penalising people have a few drinks at the weekend with min pricing and vilifying the drinker along with cancer labels due soon but thoughts to legalise hard drugs is ok and should be adopted from a country thinking of doing it.

We don't ban things 'cos a minority of people die from their use. I've had friends die from car and motorbike collisions, that doesn't mean those modes of transport should be banned. Fentanyl is actually legal and given to people in severe pain. It's a sad fact of life, a small percentage of people abuse drugs, legal or not. Mathew Perry died from Ketamine, for George Best and Amy Winehouse it was alcohol abuse. Prohibition of cocaine has made criminals like Pablo Escobar and the Kinehans very wealthy.

Long term cocaine use will absolutely mess up your heart, especially if combined with alcohol. This seems ill advised.

At least with alcohol, the vast majority of people dont participate in the kind of drinking that will kill your liver. Not so with cocaine and the heart, and you might not know it until years later when you drop dead suddenly.

Have the Swiss the climate or means to produce cocaine?

If so, fair enough. If not where will they get their supply from?

Legalising or decriminalising in one country doesn’t mean a whole lot if you still have to source from head choppers in Mexico and Colombia.

Well cocaine is still sometimes used in medicine as a topical anesthetic so I presume there is a pharmaceutical version available which must source the leaves from some non illegal means.

Medical cocaine already exists that's probably how they would get it.

All those people died under a regime of criminality for these drugs, so you are suggesting that regime should be maintained?

The war on drugs has been lost, it is a criminally stupid ideology that has not worked anywhere and is never going to work as long as a significant proportion of rich westerners are happy to fuel the demand for these substances regardless of the damage it does to themselves and society at large.

Maybe that is the way Switzerland wants to decimate the number of their citizens. Instead of euthanasia 🇨🇭 have a little snort up your nose and we will get rid of you earlier and pay you no pension.

Remember the shills only get paid when you react to them.

Vic ,so we should just legalise any crime as we can't get over it ,so let's legalise guns/knives and every other criminal offence as the war is lost ,cop on .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,908 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

Guns and knives are not drugs. They are both illegal to have but that's where the comparison ends.

You do know the 3 go together, or are you living in adifferent reality were coke is ice cream and sunny day's .

yep. there's the whole argument that drugs should be treated as a public health issue rather than a criminal one.

I honestly don't know how I feel about cocaine being legalised. It's cocaine for fecks sake. But at the same time I certainly don't know much about it's recreational use or how safe pharmaceutical grade stuff would be,m or how strong it will be, or how it would be distributed/sold. I don't want to go all Helen Lovejoy, but won't someone think of the children. It's hard enough to keep 14 year olds away from drink, never mind cocaine.

Having said all that, I would be interested in seeing the proposal. One of the reasons I want to see weed legalised is because it will remove it as a product from drug dealers. the end goal is good and it's worthy discussing if it's possible to get there.

The three go together because they are all illegal.

Anyway, this is a pretty old story and I'm fairly sure it went nowhere.

my objection to cocaine is nothing to do with the drug itself but the supply chain. The swathes of rainforest destroyed, the human cost in the areas controlled by cartels and the people forced to be drug mules are the problem.

If it’s legally manufactured, fair trade and rainforest alliance cocaine it’s nothing worse than coffee in my opinion.

Babying people by keeping drugs illegal hasn’t worked and never will.

14 year olds can buy coke now. The problem is it comes from a scumbag in a hoodie.

Criminal offences which involve a non-consenting victim such as rape, robbery, assault etc should always be illegal. Taking cocaine is totally consensual, also, people get enjoyment from it. Nobody enjoys being raped, robbed or assaulted.
