Mira Shower not pumping out water

I was down at my daughters house yesterday and they have this Mira pumped 9kw QT Elite shower , the on off switch at the front was not latching and had to be held in - my daughter ordered a new latching switch for it.

Easy job, undo 4 screws for the case , pull case off remove 2 screws on the piece of plastic that holds the latching switch, attached the switch with the spade terminals, didnt even have to solder the wires on . - put all the casing back on "That was quick/easy dad". After all the casing put on, and the shower hose connected switched shower on, no water flowing through - "Pump sounds sick Dad" - "yeah its OK its just got some air in there , when it purges through and water starts flowing through the pump will sound as normal" - waited and waited, no water coming through shower head. turned off because the pump motor was starting to smell a bit.

Off came the cover again - there is a leak from the usual elbow with the clips on from the pump and water was trickling out down by the filter plug - didnt order an elbow , but she said that it had been leaking ages like that but shower was still working with it like that, just had to hold the latching switch in because that was faulty.

"When was the last time filter taken out " - "never done it" … OK so I unscrewed filter, clear as a bell . stuck my finger up the filter hole the water flowed out with a lot of air and some brown water "that should do it now" - nope , still no water coing out of shower head. I removed head as well just in case blocked shower head, still no water flowing out. I removed the whole shower hose just in case hose had a blockage - nope.

while the case was off I hit the solenoid a few times. - still no water flowing . i touched metal casing of solenoid it was hot to the touch - if i had more time I would have put a mulitimeter up to the solenoid to check it , I couldnt hear solenoid opening and closing , but then again the pump was so noisy I wouldnt have done anyway .

I will have to look at it another day when i have more time, and look to ordering the leaking pump elbow, but I just cannot see how the shower was working before but you just had to hold in the latching switch , and all I done is replacethe faulty latching switch and now the shower will not pump out water now.

    any other ideas?

    thank you.

    Andy.

Andy, i dont like the sound of the brown water. When had it been last used before that point?

When the pump elbow leaks it usually shorts out the solenoid. This can be instant or it could be a few weeks after the new pump elbow goes in. I would suggest it's a faulty solenoid coil.

The Mira Elite QT really was the worst Pumped Electric Shower ever made. Certainly the most troublesome one

Thanks, not sure at the moment will have to check. could the brown water that came out be just the sediment inside the header tank in the loft?

Thanks, the solenoid over to the right of the leak (sorry you most probably know that) so water dropping was just dripping down from the elbow and out next to filter at bottom of the shower unit:

with the faults of these showers I suppose it was good that they designed the shower in a way if the elbow does leak there are no electrical components undernath it that it could leak on , thats one positive.

The solenoid was really hot - do you know when they short/fail do they short in open circuit situation or not?

YYes. Solenoid is the cream colored part to the right of the pump elbow

yes thats right , thats the one i was saying is hot to the touch . should that get so extremly hot in operation and if it failed would it be hot or go open circuit and be cold to the touch? (I didnt have my meter with me to test continuity of the pump)

If solenoid is energising do the actual valve in the plastic pipe part that the solenoid fits onto and pulls (or pushes?) the valve, does that valve give any problems at all , like being stuck on and stopping the water flow to the heater tank?

Usually when the valve fails, water continues to flow when you turn off the shower. When coil fails usually water doesn't flow at all or stops flowing after a minute of so

brilliant thats great advice thanks. i will look for that when I take off the cover next time . Luckily they have an identical Mira QT Elite in the other bathroom so i might try taking the solenoid out of that and swapping them over as a process of elimination (if i dont end up banjaxing both showers!) - it looks like the solenoid comes off easily without turning off water to the shower(s) and just slides over the plastic valve body.
