It looks a great car, would be perfect as a second car in our house to replace my 2017 Ioniq.

I'm either going to pull the trigger on one in the next two months or get solar panels installed. Kinda leaning towards the solars though to cut the electric bills down and then trade up in 18 months or so.

I have used the AA for insurance for the past few years - my old car was a 2010 Mazda Demio. Being a Japanese import insurance was pricey at €720. For years we were a one car family as I had a Honda maxi-scooter and was named on my wife's policy. When I got the Inster I only had 1.5 yrs experience on my own policy but about 15 yrs as a named driver on my wife's insurance. First quote I got from the AA for the Inster was 1.4k! The agent said they didn't take named driver experience into account which was strange as they did when I got my Demio quote. Anyway I phoned back the next day and spoke to someone else who said they did in fact take named driver experience into account so new quote for 1k with Aviva which I went with as I was picking up the Inster the next day and had  14 days to get a better deal. I entered my details in the Aviva website (correct car details came up on entering my reg) and got a quote of €817 for the same level of cover as via the AA! I went with AXA in the end - fully comp €551 to which I added open drive (anyone aged between 25 and 70 with a full licence covered  in my Inster) and 3 yrs no claims protection bringing total to €676. In summary I wouldn't recommend going through the AA. They couldn't give a quote online and hold time was 30 mins with lots of dropped calls and no call back. Also quote shouldn't depend on which agent you speak to. Axa were very efficient - the online quote was verified by an agent the next day and they have a Web portal they allows you to make changes eg adding extra drivers.

I didn't switch existing insurance with Aviva but took out a new policy with them. Their system didn't recognise the reg number but allowed me to enter it manually once I've accepted the quote. Switching probably works differently - I'd call them or message them if such option is available.

You’d think with new cars coming on stream they’d be prepared? Too busy raking in money eh!

Picking up an Elegance on Monday, rang my insurance company yesterday to enquire about changing over, they didn’t have the model names, all they had was the crossover, large battery and short range battery. This was Redclick used to be Liberty.

Same what Aviva had when I took out my policy 10 days ago. Since mine is Signature, I chose Short Range :)

Tried the auto regen, didn’t find it as intuitive as the i-pedal. Not useless but just found myself having to use the brake more.

Picked up my Elegance / Launch Edition today and absolutely loving it. 96.7km today brought me down to 70% with all the heating on blast. 15.7kWh/100km after a mix of 120km/h in the motorway and city traffic. Hope to take it out for a few more spins over the next few days!

Saw my ist Inster at Kinnegad charging the other day - Sligo reg. Looks very well in the flesh. 👍️

I'm guessing that was me! Did my first run down to Dublin yesterday morning and stopped in there on the way for some juice. It was a lot nicer at 120kmh on the motorway than I was expecting.

I'm in the US now at the minute and the rental place gave me a VW Taos and it feels like a complete heap of dung after having driven the Inster for a week, it would be hard to ever go back to ICE full-time now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,543 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Absolutely. Even a nice ICE feels analog in comparison.

We only had BEVs since 2020 (80k kms combined in an e-Niro & Ioniq 5).

I recently got a brand new diesel Santa Fe worth 44k as a loaner and even my teenage son was entertained by how it felt like some stone age tech's moving an otherwise nice/modern car. There's no way back for sure..

I was parking yesterday and the man next to me was very impressed with my Inster. I'd say he was well into his 80s, walked with a stick and drove a Honda Jazz with a disabled drivers permit. He reckoned it would be very handy for retirees and young ladies!

    Joining the thread. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Drove our inster yesterday for the first time, we got the buttercream color last Tuesday. It arrived in Ireland a week before, but dealer sort out some inclusions to our purchase plus they got busy for the Inster Open Event. Update our insurance the next day, motor tax applied by Thursday, and both discs arrived last Friday.

I am not a car tech, but overall experience is great. We love the it. 🥰

Agree with you, thats the demographic for sure.

Because "real man" have to drive a massive tank to prove their masculinity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,511 ✭✭✭MarkN

The opinion of most 80 year olds is very different to what's going on today. I know plenty of them who voted against same sex marriage "because". It doesn't mean their views are reflected in modern society by the majority.

Also have a Nissan Ariya - it's not quite a tank but big enough all the same. For a quick nip to lidl or into town etc the Inster is a lot handier. I'm at the stage in my life where image is literally nothing!

Dunno about demographics, I dislike all the labels people tend to use.

Oh! and I'm not getting one of these to suit my age. I hardly drive at all as it is, use my bike or walk mostly, if I have something too heavy to carry or it's pissing out of the heavens thats what I use the car for. 😊

back to the car….I've seen some vids with matt colours black and matt green ones, they look different, but they're not available here are they?

I've chosen white from the limited range available.

Reading through the thread and I'm not clear: does the Inster support v2l with the adaptor? Has anyone tried and failed/succeeded?

Also, I'm in my 50s, don't have kids and am looking at it as a second car. I have two EVs and this would replace a 10 yo Zoe. Which is fine, but only has 100km range in winter and 140km range in summer.

The consensus seems to say that V2L does not work on the current Irish models. @MarkN says this in his video at the top of this page.

I share your confusion. Most dealers will say it doesn't work (it's not on their spec sheet), however, iirc in this thread one or two dealers have said it does work and offered to sell the adaptor with the car. At least one Inster owner here has said that they've tried the adaptor and it "works perfect".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,543 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Without overthinking it and trying to come up with stretched use cases, is V2L that important?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭Fionn

Probably not that vital in a small car like this!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,579 ✭✭✭digitaldr

Following on from my last rather long post re insurance the AA refunded me in full today. I was insured with them for 5 days during the cooling off period so in theory they could have charged me pro rata but fair play to them they didn't.

Wouldn't say important but could be very useful if you live in countryside where it could take days or even a week or two power back after a storm. Even just to run an extension lead into house to keep fridge running and run your well pump occasionally would be a massive help. Can essentially replace a backup generator. If you camp could be very useful also. We do camp regularly and my wife will only stay on pitches with electric hook ups. Would open up more sites and pitches.

If you have solar with battery backup it could serve same function. V2G is really probably the future though when it's properly sorted.

I wouldn't call them stretch use case depending on where you live power outages can be frequent enough. We had a run of decade where they were pretty infrequent but last 5 years are so we have lost power every year at some stage. Most were only a few hours and a lot were planned outages. One was about 14 hours.

We lost power for 3.5 days from Storm Éowyn. Anymore contents of my freezer would have been a write off. 49kwh sitting outside door with light use would last a long time. I do have 400 watt AC 300wh powerstation will keep devices topped up and run Fibre router and wifi for 24 hours plus. Was bringing of to inlaws every day for a few hours to recharge.

I've decided to pass on Inster though. Got a good price on a bigger car that was too good of a deal to pass up on. May revisit down the line but my wife wasn't a fan showing her pics of the Inster. Maybe in the flesh she'd appreciate the quirky looks! No VTL on new car, so will invest in a powerstation that is capable of running my fridge and well or else invest in battery storage for my solar. Storage probably make the most sense despite the higher initial cost as it will over time pay for itself. A good powerstation would be handy camping tho

Has anybody figured out how to enable battery preconditioning? Manual says this should be possible manually through the EV screen or through Bluelink, but I don't see the option in either place on my Elegance car. I also tried doing it by setting a fast charger as the destination, no luck. Don't need it yet but would be nice to know it's working.

Any update on the March 15 shipment anybody?

    Just joining the thread!

Got word on Friday that my Inster Elegance Tomboy Khaki would be ready to collect this week after the SEAI form was send back to the dealer and they got it registered. Was very surprised as I was initially given end of April/start of May as the expected delivery timeframe when I ordered at the end of last month! Dealer must have got extra in their delivery or another customer cancelled their order.

As for insurance, I’m a bit worried given some of the figures people are posting on here, I just renewed with the AA for my current car, a 2020 Nissan Juke with the hope the premium would stay the same or drop by a bit however having been onto them today they said I would have to do a temporary substitution of €30 to allow the car to be added to their price books which can take up to 2 weeks and couldn’t even give me an indication of what the final quote to change may be once they’ve added the car. I’m still within my cooling off period for the renewal so I’m thinking of cancelling and going for a policy with AXA @ €663 with open driving so I have a definite amount. Tried Aviva too but they quoted €1.6k which is absolute madness. Are they’re any other insurers that anyone has been able to get a quote with other than AXA and Aviva? I’ve also tried AIG through Revolut as I’ve switched all my day to day banking over to them and there’s a 10% discount if you’re a metal account holder but like AA they don’t have the car on their system. I’ve arranged to pick up the car on Saturday to give me the remainder of the week to get the insurance sorted so any help would be seriously appreciated 😅

Also I just wanted to point out something about the accessories Hyundai are offering as I don’t think anyone has posted anything about them as of yet. I ended up ordering the all weather floor mats, all weather trunk liner with extension and the bungee cord storage inserts for the interchangeable panels on the front doors. If you’re thinking of ordering any accessories you could be waiting a while as my dealer told me accessory deliveries for the inster still haven’t shipped and could take up until June to arrive with the exception of universal accessories such as charging cables etc. which most dealers keep on hand.

I asked about V2L and like many others my dealer said it’s not enabled on the Irish versions but said he would be happy for me to give it a try with one of the adapters off one of the showroom vehicles that have it. Given there’s been a few people to report it working and some saying it doesn’t I have a feeling there are certain batches coming off the production line that do have it and some don’t. I’ll post an update here if I’m successful, would be such a nice surprise if V2L does work but I’m not getting my hopes up 😅

As for dash cams, I’ve next base in my car atm (front and rear) that I’m going to use in the inster, the dealer quoted me €750 for the Hyundai approved nextbase kit which seems astronomical seeing as it’s only a forward facing dashcam and isnt actually integrated with or set up for remote viewing. Has anyone that’s taken delivery of their inster had an aftermarket dashcam fitted and if so is it easy enough to wire into the fusebox with a fuse tap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,897 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

There's an offer on the Hyundai website for a dashcam at a slightly better price

@pmagkav I ended up doing a change on the phone with Aviva. They didn't have the Irish model names on their system but used a "close enough" UK trim level name. They can be manually selected on the website I think, to get a new quote, as the reg won't be recognised yet.
