The Governor of Maine could have picked a better hill to die on in fairness. The vast majority of Americans agree that men have no place in Women's Sports.

And in this strategic vein, avoid insulting Trump voters, being consumed by pathetic hysteria and emphasising leftist stances on social issues.

This is how Democrats lose, and lose badly. Remember that most Americans don’t view things the same way as the wealthy donors on the coasts do. Democrats need some of the former grouping on board to prevail.

It's not often I rate anything Larry Donnelly says highly, but his opin in TheJournal.ie this morning threw out this nugget of wisdom.

Maybe it's the case of that for many years now the Democrats have been captured by the far-left that they are totally disconnected from the average American voter on these amongst other issues and hence the results of the Trump election is a direct consequence.

Trump is dead right in what he said to the Maine Governor. Trump was dead wrong in 'how' he said it to the Maine Governor. However, I think the days of decorum in politics is long gone - it started with deplorables, quickly moved on to 'literal nazis' and yet, here we are.

That film was way slower than I thought it would be. It has some solid moments and Jesse Plemons was good in it, but I would say the definitive depiction of civil war II in the USA is yet to be committed to celluloid. Maybe it'll be PBS Frontline at this stage…

    @ancapailldorcha

Does it matter? It's not like any law enforcement agency or the corrupt supreme court will care.

The US Supreme court has only three Trump appointees on it. Clarence Thomas's integrity has also been heavily questioned, due to the political views of his wife and his apparent enjoyment of gifts from influential people, but that's still four of a nine justice panel. The chief justice, John Roberts, is also of a conservative viewpoint, having been appointed by Bush Sr., but this was back when politics was normal in the US, pretty much. He seems like a serious figure, and not someone who would side with MAGA because MAGA, and flagrantly go against the US constitution in order to support Trump.

And to be honest, even Trump's appointees have ruled against Trump's side of cases before. I think they refused to even entertain the one about electoral fraud in the 2020 election.

People would point to the decision on presidential immunity as evidence of the SCOTUS's corrupt nature, although I see that was a 6-3 decision, meaning one liberal judge must have sided on the majority opinion, when they didn't even need to in order to give Trump a win.

He's spent the last week turning on a nation that was invaded and siding with a dictator. American Mussolini is probably the most apt description.

But sure he's targeting trans people so you can ignore everything that doesn't suit.

The US Supreme court has only three Trump appointees on it.

Three so far. Nothing stopping him adding more MAGA Judges if he wanted to.

As she stated, she has to abide by state and federal laws. I'm sure she would be critized by the same crowd if she were to break state or federal laws.

If the state law allows men to play women's sports, she has to abide by that and there are no federal laws preventing men playing in a women's sport.

I know it's hard to contemplate a politician following the law. She didn't pick the hill to die on, she's just following state law.

Your last point on the 6-3 presidential immunity decision, no liberal judge sided with the majority. There's only 3 of them and they all voted against.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,046 ✭✭✭✭briany

Yeah, and EOs cannot override federal laws. The Maine governor pointed out the glaring truth of the matter - laws are to be followed, not Trump's despotic declarations.

Now, the bizarre thing is that Trump could get that law passed. He has the House and Senate. So, where is it? It's as if Trump doesn't want to undermine the strongman position he's attempting to establish by seeking assent from other branches of government. It can hardly be overstated what peril US democracy is in right now.

Fair enough. OK, well that changes the calculus. So, then is it the case that all six conservative justices, including the Bush appointees have gone bad? Would they be willing to flagrantly contravene the US constitution in order to aid Trump?

He’s trying to stop the killing, why not have a pop at the ones who haven’t tried instead of him. What’s Ursula being doing the last 3yrs?

He’s protecting women particularly in sport most people can see that and view it as a positive thing.

These are the same judges that voted for citizens united and to repeal roe v wade.

The SCOTUS has been on the wrong side of a knife edge for decades now.

Conservatives appoint young healthy unqualified nakedly political appointments, Dems appoint elderly 'centrists'

Play that game out as if it was a game of chess....

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

He's trying to stop killing by justifying the invasion and calling Zelensky a dictator? Weird approach.

Too many people think that EO was a ban on transgender athletics. It wasn't, it was just withholding federal funding for any organisation who allows men play women's sports. Women playing men's sports are ok though, reverse sexism or something there.

I'm just wondering how far he can push the EO's with regard to pausing/cancelling funding that Congress has already approved. If the courts let him away with it and set a precedence, it's very easy for him to get a budget passed that won't touch federal funded social programs but then the day after it's passed he just signs an EO cancelling all the funding.

Now Is the time for EU+UK to cut a deal with Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees on better terms than the shake down that the Americans are trying, wouldnt be suprised to see Trumps administration give Russia economic relief and covert help in this, Europe needs to unite the remaining western democracies around thr world against the big bad yank.

Tell you what any American that comes to Europe on their 10 day summer holiday should find out what it's like to be a pariah owing to the administration they have elected.

He's trying to stop the killing...by facilitating a genocide. A genocide and an ethnic cleansing in just one month. He's fairly filling out the facist bingo card.

But of course, you know that. You just don't disapprove.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,060 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

He is in his hole trying to stop the killing.

He didn't give a toss about the deaths of Americans during Covid, nothing in his nearly 80 years has suggested hes capabale of compassion for others.

He wants to be "seen" to stop the killings and enrich America in doing it. That's it. All of it.

It's beyond laughable to keep claiming that a sexual predator cares about protecting women. The women I know couldn't give a fück about trans people in sport or bathrooms and are sick to the back teeth of hearing about it as like 99.9% of women, it has zero impact on their everyday lives. What they do care about is heathcare, gender based violence and inequality, their sexual and reproductive rights, discrimination, education to name a few. Women's basic rights and freedoms are being eroded all over the world and the likes of you are still wittering on about trans people incessantly. Give it a rest ffs.

    Trying to stop the killing….

"Ursela" has been supplying weapons and money to a country facing an existential crisis, the moment they stop resisting they will be ethnically cleansed and their identity erased.

Trump? He's got zero interest in "stopping the killing", he's a petulant child who's thrown his toys out of the pram when Ukraine refused his terrible offer to sign their country away.

So much so that even his own die-hard supporters are sitting up and saying no. His own previous VP had to stand up and say no, Trump had that totally wrong, as did many old-hand republican senators.

Telling the world bald-faced lies that Zelensky is a dictator, doesn't want peace, started the war, Putin is actually a good guy, wants peace, announcing to the world before any negotiations even happened that Putin should get everything he wants.

The reason that no-one "negotiated" over the past few years is because you don't negotiate with a dictator who's hell bent on erasing your country.

Does that include E. Jean Carroll and the other women he assaulted?

+1, you should always hand over your lunch money when a bully starts on you. As long as they promise not to keep picking on you there's no need to have friends to back you up. Being in a large group of friends would cross a red line and merely provoke the bully.

    He's a feminist apparently..

In other news, his approval ratings are on a rapid decline already and it's pissing him off.

Trump said it all when he spoke, not only to the Maine Governor, but to all the Governors present using the royal we "We Are The Law".

Trump addressed her with his "are you there?" question, knowing full well that she was there, leaving her no other choice but to respond in defence of her own position and those whom she was elected by. He chose the venue to row publicly with her with his clear intent on threatening, not just her, but all the governors there with withdrawal of federal funding from projects in their states if they didn't do as he instructs.

Women on the field of sport or in the restrooms and changing rooms?

I had expected that Trump would either sign an E.O. withdrawing the US from NATO or [lesser option] get some-one in the GOP to move something on that lines. However Senator Mike Lee [R] Utah and Rep Chip Roy [R] Texas are moving bills to have the US withdraw from the UN.

Sen Lee on Fox News "The United Nations has devolved into a platform for tyrants and a venue to attack America and her allies. We should stop paying for it. As President Trump revolutionizes our foreign policy by putting America first, we should withdraw from this sham organization and prioritize real alliances that keep our country safe and prosperous."

so we just stick to the EU/UK plan, we keep going until the last Ukrainian? Zelensky doesn’t seem to have any serious friends to back him up besides America, he needs to do a deal with Trump and by the sounds of it he has. Smart guys hire the bully for protection rather than playing the victim which I think is what we’re about to see happen.
Now he’s got the Ukrainian deal it’s time for the Russian one, he’s not just going to hand Putin a win if there’s a deal done to back Ukraine. For all the dramatics during the week Ukraine is now probably in a stronger position.

What do you get out of promoting him here? Genuine question. Literally the opposite of everything you've claimed is true but you're making Trump, a serial abuser of women and fascist, out to be some kind of feminist and peacemaker.

Not sure of your definition of the word, it’s all here on the Whitehouse website, a good few posters seem outraged he’s attacking women with such orders. Truly puzzling.

The news everyday is awful .trump is ignoring Congress passing executive orders to take apart the federal government and make it into a tool that reduces regulations that make impose costs on rich people billionaires and corporations.the civil service is there to protect the public and the environment and enable financial regulations .the point of reducing staff and so called waste is that regulations like consumer regulations will be ignored or not enforced .doj lawsuits against corruption and corporate negligence will reduced .

The quality of life for ordinary Americans will go down.medical services and medicare services for old people and working class people will be cut back to enable more tax cuts for rich people and corporations . 500 people were let go from the faa these people provide services for flight controllers and make sure that airlines follow the complex regulations that are concerned with plane maintenance and other procedures

Republicans are already protesting in some states as they see the effect of layoffs in federal agencys on ordinary people and services. When theres 1000s of people let go from agencys it's a negative long term effect those people will get new jobs and probably will never be replaced

The us army is struggling to get new recruits the loss of dei is bad news it makes it harder to find new recruits from minority groups

The federal government is a complex matrix of agencys it's budget is a trillion dollars it took decades to build it and to put in place computer networks that keep America working and provide public services like education and the collection of tax's and services like state parks and roads and emergency services

Doge and the actions of musk will just reduce the quality of life for ordinary Americans

The federal government was put in place by acts of Congress and the senate it's against democratic principals to sack 1000s of workers that provide services and protect the environment
