Sourcing Smells

Noxious smells are coming in from what must be the semi-detached house next door, it seems like it's coming in from under the common floors. I'm told that it can't be coming through the walls.

All the usual spots have been investigated and ruled out as the cause or route of the smell, neighbour has volunteered the services of one of his family to see if they can trace the source, I have my doubts about any finding of that person in the circumstances.

I don't know what kind of trade/service person I would need to hire to find out what's going on. can anyone give me direction on this, please?

How do you know they are noxious?

    Describe the smell.

It induces headaches and wrecks concentration. I can't describe the smell as it changes from visit to visit. The first time I got it, it smelled like turps. Weeks later, it was a sharp bleachy up tone with a heavy overtone, and this week's version smells like petrol.

Takes days to clear out of the house completely and lingers even after clothing is washed and line dried.

have a similar issue with the terrace next door, there must be gaps in the party wall.
Currently looking for a contractor to have the wall re opened and seal what they find, floor needs to be lift off, probably joist level issue.
