Steering Rack

Hi. I've been told the steering rack is gone on my MK3 Focus 1.6tdci with 320k'kms on the clock. Just wondering what are the best options for replacement.

    1. Second hand, Refurbished (assuming it can be done) or New?
    2. I believe the steering on these is electric assisted. Does the rack need to be programmed to the car?
    3. Any idea of cost to replace a rack at an indy?

    Thanks.

I’ve gotten a refurbished one for a Fiesta for around €300 from the motor factors but you need to give them your old one. The refurbished one only lasted a couple of years before needing to be replaced again at the next NCT. You can get your one refurbished as well for a similar price. A brand new one from Ford will set you back in excess of €1000 all in. You could try get a used genuine one from a scrapyard. I think the labour charge from an independent was similar cost to the refurbished part itself, maybe a bit less

Sound lads to deal with. Got one off them for a Sprinter van a while back, it started to leak a bit after about

6 months. They done a swap straight away.

Thanks. Will give Driveshaft services a shout.

I did get a price of €450 for a second hand one from a 2017 with 51k miles on it. Another at around €250 from older focus with 120k kms on it.

Are you experiencing any symptoms yourself while driving? Usually those racks fail electronically and just flat out don't assist the steering at all, accompanied by an error message on the dash.

Are you constantly having to adjust the steering while driving straight down the road or does the steering feel very loose and vague?

Thanks. I have to adjust the steering. Best way to describe it would be if I steer left it feels stuck when returning to centre and needs a little force, same when returning from the right. Feels heavy in general. No error message shown.
