I actually feel like the franchise could work well tackling modern themes' like climate change, social media, disinformation, AI, technology, etc.. Of course, corporations are only interested in peddling anodyne drivel for the most part so that's more or less a fantasy at this point. I won't pretend that this is the loss of a golden franchise though. All but one of the Craig films are utter trash barely above the MCU's usual boilerplate offerings.

Did you question at all if this is something you or literally anyone in the world wants?

It could work. Greta Thunberg gets kidnapped and Bond rescues her on his solar powered yacht - the latest offering from Q branch.

I can't see where the franchise goes from here.

Bond really belongs in the 20th Century/Cold War.

Even as far back as Die Another Day the franchise was already over the hill and they had run out of new ideas.

In the digital age Bond is sort of irrelevant.

Maybe a crisis set in "real time", like an episode of 24.

It's a suggestion on an internet forum. No need to get hysterical.

Well i will suggest to you that if those topics were as popular as you think they are then producers should have no issue creating a dedicated franchise for this that stands on its own merits rather than piggybacking them on top of existing and established ones.

Bond does tend to always deal with the issues of the time in some sense. So it wouldn't be out of place at all. I'd actually say the Mission Impossible or Bourne movies have dealt with a lot of those topics with the exception of social media and climate change. Might be a more extreme approach much of the time but I could totally see it working for a Bond.

Also Bond has previously touched upon the topic of media disinformation so it wouldn't be out of place. Eg Elliott Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies was a media mogul controlling the narrative and literally manufacturing news. That was clearly inspired by the likes of Robert Maxwell and Rupert Murdock.

So not really getting the annoyance at the poster, they're not personally making the decisions at Amazon or anything.

Nah. James Bond is a great vehicle for exploring these.

I watched Tomorrow Never Dies recently. It has aged incredibly well. It'd be great to see Bond continue in that vein despite what perpetually hysterical men might say on the internet.

"Who'd you pick as the next Bond?"

That was the question posed by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos this week to his 6.8 million followers on X.

It is Bezos who will now have the final say on the next 007. He asked for suggestions alongside a screenshot of the BBC News story about his company gaining creative control of the famous spy film franchise.

The choice of Daniel Craig's replacement will now be Amazon MGM Studios' biggest decision.

… the article goes on to suggest actors…

I agree with you. The World is Not Enough was about control of a gas line which is somewhat topical also.

Tomorrow Never Dies is a terrific film and does stand up to the test of time.

Seeing as people are bemoaning the fact that we'll be subjected to a James Bond Cinematic universe which bucket loads of spin-offs , Wasn't there a James Bond Junior Cartoon series in the 1990's?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,616 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

    Indeed there was.

You would think spin-offs couldn't even happen until they've established some new characters within the radius of the next Bond. Proximity to Bond is the only tie-in if the setting is modern day. Paloma from NTTD would have been the most obvious candidate of the Craig era.

But as long as the movies are prioritised (and quality) they can do whatever they want with spinoffs.

Nobody is complaining about spinoffs per se. It's that if it goes the way of Star Wars and Marvel it will be a deluge of spin offs. A prequel movie of Bond, a prequel movie of Blofeld etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,061 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

That wouldn't be good alright as it will cheapen everything about it but I guess that's probably the way they'll go.At least they exist as the Ian Fleming novels so those can never be ruined like Star Wars can by it not having a firm original non franchise basis.

Buying the rights for $1 billion seems like the deal of the century though, they'd recoup that money by just making 2 films and releasing them to the cinema's.

A Ms.Moneypenny backstory - a fascinating exploration of a civil servant secretary climbing through several grades of the public sector until she applies for an internal competition in MI5. She finishes 3rd on the panel, but eventually gets selected due to an older colleagues retirement and another deciding to become a teacher.

Ms Moneypenny will return in "Moneypenny: The Words (per minute) is not Enough"

The first choice was a plant of a foreign power, 'outed' by Moneypenny… it writes itself :)

I'd say there is a lot of James Bond Juniors out there with the way Senior carried on 😉

When people say they don't like the grittier bond of the Daniel Craig films, they obviously never read the books where he's a lot less refined.

For example, You Only Live Twice (film)

Tiger: I hope you like sake, or would you prefer a martini?

Bond: no no, I like sake. Especially when it's served at the correct temperature, 64.9 degrees fahrenheit.

    In the book, bond says:

Tiger, enough of this bloody sake, bring on the Russian Vodka.

So, to your point, even the original material has changed. That said, bond as a character has a back story. He is Scottish. His mother was French Swiss. His parents died in a skiing accident. I'm really hoping they respect that history.

I’d be happy with something like a blofeld back story what I wouldn’t like is if every story had to involve bond in some way. There could be some great stories to tell but it’s not an endless universe like star wars. It has to be limited enough by the nature of it being set around British secret service. Possibly room for something on the American agent can’t remember his name but that would take it away from the Bond theme I think.

The absolute last thing something like James Bond needs are backstories. Nobody gives a **** why Blofieldt is the way he is (they didn't care for it in 'Spectre'). Nobody wants to know why Dr.No became a nutter. I doubt anyone gives a toss about Bond's early years.

These are fantasy characters. Almost high fantasy characters. They're utterly ridiculous and the world they inhabit is patently absurd. They're supposed to be that way. But expanding on them will only ruin them.

It'll be just like the disaster that Star Wars became.

Amazon should learn from the rejection of their Lord of the Rings fiasco. Nobody cared to know why Galadriel became what she became and they certainly did not want to she her morphed into some absurd warrior. They went a long way to ruining Tolkein's rich world.

Bond is simple and it should be kept simple. There's no need to complicate matters.

They'll try it out and if enough people watch it, they'll keep going.

People will want to see new stuff. Maybe not Bond die-hards, but there's an audience to hoover up anything studios make these days.

If the new owners of Lucasfilm never did this we'd wouldn't have got Rogue One or Andor. Good stuff is possible.

Also it depends on whether you can compartmentalise their offerings. For me, the bloated mess of The Hobbit movies doesn't detract from the cinematic masterpiece that was the LOTR trilogy.

I'm happy to ignore any spurious offerings from the Bond universe, as long Amazon don't f*ck up Bond 26, 27, etc.

The rest is entertainment did an interesting section this week on Barbara Broccoli giving over control of Bond to Amazon. The rumoured figures are eye watering. They made it sound like she was finding it hard to decide how to proceed without Craig.
