anyone faced this issue before with EI. my contract is until aug on standard plan. im getting an ev this month. so if I want to switch to their SST smart plan they wouldn't let me. they can only offer their costliest night boost plan but not the cheapest to their existing customer?

Thank you for the information. Used it to change contract. Saving a good few hundred a year! 👍

They have a 2 hour window for the ev rate, will that be enough for you? I switched to BG and they gave 50 credit which will nullify the charge to break contract from Electric Ireland.

It might be worth breaking out of your contract, we did it last year and it was only €50 or something, the savings we made in one month easily paid for it. (But maybe we were on a very bad plan)

thanks im on standard 23 cents 24hr plan. its good enough but not worth it night charging ev. im have 6months remaining on contract.

It would make more sense to have it the other way around with 2,000 day and 3,000 night😕

It only goes up by a few cents for the units above the threshold.

It's €50 to break the contract and you might make that back on the standing charges alone. The Energia one quoted above would save you 10c/kWh charging and the daytime rate is only marginally above your 24hr one.

If you were only charging 50kWh a week, you'd save over €20 a month. And if you switched some high usage appliances like clothes and dish washing to night time, you'd save more.

Hi all, does anyone know when I can switch provider without incurring a penalty charge. My Bord Gáis deal runs out in March and it looks like energia is the best one for me from energy pal. I don’t think I can specify a future date when I want to switch.

It’s odd seeing as the energia plan doesn’t seem to have an EV part but I guess overall it works out cheaper, the energia plan is Smart Data & 33% Discount and the night rate is 13.49 cents.

The day after your contract ends is the day to move. It's in the top right hand corner of you bill when your contract ends, mine is July 14, I'll initiate a move on the 15th. Using the actual unit usage figures on your bill, D/P/N and EV with the Energia rates see does it save you much, I think you'd be better off waiting until your contract expires.

my flogas BWG deal is up end of March, nothing as good currently available, Energy pal suggests that the energia smart data 33% discount plan will end up with a similar annual bill due to the lower standing charge.

    Anything i am missing?

Interesting the section where it tells you what size battery you could use, looks like it needs to be 25kwh+

I’m in the same situation and closest I’ve seen is a 30% off Electric Ireland offer. Day rate @ 25.973 cent per kWh & Night rate @ 12.811 cent per kWh. Both rates are VAT inclusive. I’ll probably wait it out in case something better comes along.

That's pretty much the same as the Flogas BWG offer from last year.

Good to see a viable option for anyone coming off that plan. Are the rates fixed though?

exact same, seems the electric Ireland one above is the same, was hoping to get a lower day/night rate. but I guess 26/13 is not too bad.

Slight o topic. I have solar and a battery, I'm currently on the electric Ireland 24 hr rate.

Should I change to the night rate to make better use of the battery and draw from the cheap night rates?

I've a 10kW battery, saves me about 600/700 a year by charging @ the cheap rate. Take about 80-85% of you battery capacity and multiply by the difference in the rates, won't be too far off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭joe1303l

No, rates are variable and discount is fixed. Hence the Affinity Flogas fixed rate was far more attractive this time last year. If nothing better turns up in the next few weeks, it’s probably as good as it gets even though it has a hefty standing charge too.

We are buying our first EV & finding a plan a minefield. We're currently with EI & paying .31c with 28% discount the standing charge is €236. Looking around online the big difference is in the rural standing charge some companies want, nearly double our current. We do very few miles a week & I'm starting to wonder if the savings with an overnight reduced rate for charging the EV would be cancelled out by the higher daytime rate & higher standing charge. Grateful for any suggestions.

Have you got a smart meter? If you have, the Energia smart plan is very competitive, not the EV plan the SC and unit rates are too high on that one. The Energia rates are 25/26/13c for day/ peak/night with 250 SC urban I don't know how much the rural rate is.

The 350 credit, does it have to be used against purchase of a charger, or is more of a generic credit added to the account

    €350 EV charger credit bonus

Sign up for Home Electric+ Night Boost EV and receive a €350 EV charger credit in the form of a welcome bonus added to your account.

Anyone found a plan with a nice long night time range? I'm on Energia's Smart EV plan, the night rate is from 2am to 6am but it's never enough for charging 2 cars (drive a lot) and a heat pump so invariably we eat into the day rates at 40c ish

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,833 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Yeah, the Energia Smart Data or whatever it's called now. About 13c from 11pm to 8am and 24c at other times except peak from 5-7 which is 27c.

I looked at that EV plan and figured it was bad value because of the high day rate and the short charging window.

Energypal.ie has Energia Smart Data + €75 cash back as the best tariff for me. My flogas bwg contract is up at the end of March so will hang on until it expires before moving and pocket the full €75 welcome offer.

I love the battery tab at the bottom. The person who set this site up deserves more than just a coffee.

That site is phenomenal. I love how it takes the exported units into consideration too. (note, I expect my exported units to be higher going forward, some of the time period covered was when I was on deemed export.)

Still shows what I thought for my usage. The smart tariffs don't have enough time at the cheaper night rates to meet the savings on a day night rate. So I'll be sticking with my MCC02 for the time being.

Every home/EV setup/needs, is completly different, what works for someone, won’t work for someone else,

You need a decent sized battery, and average to below average daily EV mileage, for the Energia Smart EV Drive plan to work, it has the longest sub 8 cent night rate on the market, 4 hours @ 7.54 c inc vat, and rising up to 8.67 c inc vat for the excess above1000 units in 2 month billing period.

I looked at Pinergy’s 3 hour window, but that would not work for us, albeit cheaper @ 5.45 cent, and EI’s 2 hour night boost window is totally unworkable for all but very low mileage, single EV households, and it is 8.84 c inc vat.

We’re lucky, our EV mileage is lowish, but we manage fine with 3 EV’s exclusively charging on the 4 hour Energia window, + timed: battery charging, heat pump water heating, washing machine, dishwasher, 4 hours is just enough for us, 3 hours is not.

I see Energia now have a “EV Smart Drive plus” tarriff,:

The 4 hours 2 am to 6am @ 8.31 cent inc vat, limited to 1000 units per 2 month billing cycle, then that rises to 15.62 for the excess above 1000 units, but also has a 5 hour night rate (11pm to 2 am & 6am to 8 am)of 18.54 c inc vat. Wouldn’t work for me, but might for others.
