Does he honestly believe that an IPTV seller would use your details to send you scam emails and texts?

    I'll put it another way.

Do you honestly think your provider would not sell your details to a nefarious organization who would then use them for scam purposes?

Once a year, I pay a lad 50 quid on paypal. Not the best in the world but i only use it for sport. I started out cardsharing many moons ago, now its just handy, nvidia shield tv and an app.

It was actually boards where i learned about cardsharing, there was a warning about no cardsharing talk in the satellite forum. I started googling what this was and i was away, set up parents and friends down through the years. My wife was delighted when i took down my big motorised 90cm dish that i used for the different sats.

I did wonder, when I heard Adrian, how many dodgy box distributers would be stupid enough to accept card for payment.

The direct risk to them from a paper trail would far outweigh any reward from harvesting a handful of card details.

But as an expert he gets to say stuff.

Look out for that house being seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau.

It was almost like a paid for promotion on behalf of FACT. No debate, just some classic RTE scare tactics. Everyone gets scam emails/texts/calls regardless if they subscribe to IPTV or not.

Thing is, if he just raised valid issues (eg it is illegal, in a lot if cases it does go back to a criminal organisation) without the additional scaremongering (I've heard him say all devices have spyware on them, your details get shared with scammers, your payment details get stolen by scammers, etc) then he'd have a better argument.

BitCoin wallet (Phantom) and PayPal are how I pay my provider. PayPal is set up using a different email and only used for IPTV payment. The only other details he has is my telegram username. The scaremongering about stealing your personal details and bank details is off the charts.

No established journalist is going to go on RTE or any other established media outlet and advocate for the use of dodgy boxes, or even imply that there is nothing wrong with dodgy boxes.

And neither are those media outlets going to bring on anyone to do the same.

If you want a dodgy box lovefest just stay here.

It doesn't have to be a "lovefest" either. RTE could always just not publish misinformation and leave it at that.

I don't doubt some would but why would they?

They could have an email address (likely a fake one) and in some cases a linked phone number to sell on. The value of this is negligible/zero compared to the profit they would be making for selling the service. It doesn't make any business sense.

I don't have a dodgy box, but the nature of the things leave them open to be infected with spyware and software that can grant access to your LAN and any devices connected to that LAN

The guy selling you the 'dodgy box' probably isn't configuring them himself, he's probably getting them from some other supplier who flashes the software in bulk, and that's the person who has.

    a) no problem with breaking the law

    b) a potentially lucrative revenue stream from selling compromised data or access to your home network to other people

Unless you get the fire stick yourself, jailbreak it yourself using tools and firmware you know is not compromised with malware, and the install and maintain the IPTV software yourself using software you know is not compromised, then you're basically paying someone to allow them to install a device onto your home network that can be used to steal your data and hijack your devices.

Remote Access Trojan (RAT) malware is very common and can allow other users to take full control of any device connected to a network if it's not properly secured (and many many people don't have good security habits for their personal devices (is there a security update waiting to be installed on your device right now that you'll get around to doing later? probably more than one)

Every single person I know using a "dodgy box" is actually using an app they have installed to a firestick, Android box, phone or tablet. It's just an app. Yes there are people selling pre configured devices, but that's not my experience here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,882 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

How many people is that, and why did they tell you? Loose talk is what could bring the downfall of criminals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

It's pretty well known that when people say dodgy box, it's actually as the poster said a pre loaded app on a FireStick.

It's not a big secret or anything. Any of my family, direct and extended along with all my mates that have "dodgy boxes" are using a firestick with one form of app or another and not all from the same "supplier". I can account to 20 odd people and I don't think we're bringing down the suppliers by having a chat.

They would because essentially they are money making enterprises.

And if they can make more money from selling personal information they will do it.

It's not as if they are required to be compliant with any data protection laws or anything, they have nothing to lose by selling it.

People reveal a lot of information in these pages. Most recently that a dodgy provider works for an insurance company and has just bought a house. Putting on my Sherlock Holmes hat, I would surmise it was a cash purchase from criminal earnings. Mortagage providers would look at the sources of his income if he went for a loan. Those are the sort of signs that CAB watch out for when planning to seize assets.

thats the risks lads take, people always talk, again, more risks, if theyre caught, theyre caught, again, thats the risks, same as any other criminal activities, doesnt seem to bother too many lads though, jailing lads also doesnt seem to be much of a deterrent!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

That has nothing to do with me but thanks for your theory…

What's your big issue with dodgy boxes/fire sticks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,882 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

No issue. But I am amused by the hypocrisy. People blaming Sky for forcing them to break the law.

I don't believe the majority are saying that Sky is forcing them to use firesticks, hardly have a gun to anyone's head.

People are merely stating and rightfully so that their prices are extortionate and not worth it when there's a much cheaper alternative product available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,111 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

theres clearly an element of the behaviors of major broadcasters as to why so many are now engaging in such activities, fans are feeling hard done by the pure exploitation of these industries and businesses, so the fans are going, fcuk it, theres a much cheaper option available to me, so why not!

be a long time before they start knocking on users doors, so in the meantime

as marco from tropoja would say "good luck"

Was it specified that he used his iptv money towards the house? He could get a mortgage from his earnings as an employee for the insurance company. The money from iptv could go into crypto etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,882 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Not specified. The whole thing could be made up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,480 ✭✭✭jj880

But according to you it was "Information revealed" to get an IPTV seller caught. Gospel. You had your Sherlock Holmes hat on.

But 2 minutes later when that's debunked now its all made up 🤣 You are the clowniest of all clowns Ive seen on here.

I saw the Primetime thing last night.

    Smacked of total vested interest.

A couple of words of advice to potential IPTV users.

    1. Avoid any provider who advertised openly on social media.
    2. Never provide your cc or bank details to anyone you don't know or trust.

Slow mate, I'm tryna write this down.

"don't provide bank details to illegal blackmarket anonymous iptv providers on the internet" - and would this include passwords?
