Peacekeeping is fanciful nonsense that does nothing but put European troops in harms way whilst Putin rebuilds. Europe need to forget the yanks, get full square behind Ukraine and end this thing, restoring Ukraine to at least its 2022 border. In return, Ukraine will need to cut deals with Europe for the supply of gas and prescious metals and minerals to reinvigorate the European economy with a view to at some stage in the future, joining the EU.

Contracts need to move away from US suppliers and towards European companies in all parts of Europe so everyone has a stake in the game. Theres plenty of capacity in Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands to lead the charge on major items and Britain needs to come back to the table. Brexit was a farce, they need to admit it and realign.

Indeed. No one from 5 years ago in their wildest imagination predicted the current craziness at the moment. Which is why we seem to keep getting caught blindsided.

For these reasons we have to factor in unpleasant scenarios no matter how far fetched they may seem. A possible fracture in the EU, the US leaving NATO, vastly increased hybrid warfare from Putin, something happening between China/Taiwan, changes in politics (populists, far right) and so on.

If we can come up with something solid and resistant to all that - then we can hopefully keep Putin in his box while his economy slowly rots from within.

You're not wrong in principal but the EU often can't act together on issues. Putin would play one against the other and pick one off at a time.

Here's the one from 3 days previous.

    https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/512629

I emailed the OSCE to get clarification as I was shocked.

Unless you're suggesting Russia had a secret operation to attack Donbas/ Luhansk? I think the burden is on you to prove that Russia or Donabs were killing themselves before the 24 February invasion. Sounds similar to Russia blowing up its own pipeline conspiracy theories.

Even if Putin's regime collapsed tomorrow but Trump was still antagonistic against NATO what happens all the US bases in NATO countries?

He doesn't have a plan, never did.

Radicalized —> up all night monitoring telgram and fighting the 'bots' etc. The overton window has shifted massively if being in favour of peace and human rights is regarded as being radicalised.

It seems that some here want nothing less than the extermination of the entire slavic peoples in Russia and abroad and not just death but torturing them to death. I don't know why you would find something you disagree with hysterical…

Little point in continuing this. you ignore all the facts asnd evidence I present which disprove your arguments and call it propaganda. I'm just going to take a break for a while as it feels like it is going nowhere.

You do realise the OSCE reported on Russian involvement

Here's a summary, do you want links to the OSCE reports themselves?

Key Findings from OSCE Reports (2014–2021)

    1. Unmarked Troops & Advanced Weapons
      • The OSCE observed military convoys moving across the Russian-Ukrainian border into separatist-held areas.
      • They reported Russian-made advanced weaponry, such as T-72B3 tanks, which were never in Ukraine’s inventory before 2014.
      • OSCE monitors identified Russian soldiers without insignias operating in Donetsk and Luhansk.
    2. Presence of Russian Military Personnel
      • Multiple prisoners of war (POWs) captured by Ukraine admitted to being active-duty Russian soldiers.
      • OSCE noted that bodies of Russian soldiers were transported back to Russia, suggesting their involvement in combat.
    3. Electronic Warfare & Military Logistics
      • OSCE documented Russian electronic warfare systems, such as RB-341V "Leer-3", used for drone and communication interference.
      • Reports noted a steady flow of fuel, ammunition, and heavy military equipment coming from Russia into occupied territories.
    4. Border Crossings & Restricted Areas
      • The OSCE Border Observer Mission (2014–2021) was stationed at two Russian border crossings but was restricted from monitoring other key locations.
      • Despite restrictions, OSCE monitors observed troops moving from Russia into Ukraine in unmarked vehicles.
    5. Ceasefire Violations & Russian Command Control
      • The OSCE recorded thousands of ceasefire violations, often initiated from separatist-controlled regions.
      • Intercepted communications suggested that separatist forces were receiving direct orders from Russian officers.

    Russian Denials & Disinformation

    • Russia consistently denied involvement, claiming it was a “civil war” between Ukraine and “local rebels.”
    • The "little green men" (unmarked Russian troops) used in Crimea were similarly seen in Donbas but were described as “volunteers” by Russia.

You're saying there's problems on both sides and have justified the invasion on a frequent basis. Russia are the ones who have been advocating for genocide.I advocate for Russia to exit the region they invaded, hardly calling for an ethnic cleansing or torture. Also I'd say it's absolutely radicalisation if you're espousing what amounts to Russian propaganda. Even the idea of self determination for a nation goes back to the early 20th century but you're blaming Ukraine for their invasion because they are engaging in it.

At the start of WW2, you had numerous groups advocating for appeasement of the Germans including the British government. That policy enabled the Nazis btw. Pacifism doesn't make sense all the time and that's proven by history.

In relation to your friend's husband. I wouldn't find it particularly odd that a Ukrainian is closely following the invasion of his country. Shutting down disinformation is also beneficial IMHO.. Depends on where it's done obviously.

It's important to keep dragging up the same old debunked nonsense as (1) it provides a good laugh at the stuff some people allow themselves to believe but more importantly (2) provides some nice refreshers for people on the litany of reasons that gave Russia no choice but to engage in a genocidal invasion, lest we allow ourselves to forget. Admittedly there may be 20 reasons surely one of them only needs to be a quarter true to justify the genocide surely.

Have you noticed how **** the Russian assault's have been lately. Aging armoured vehicles combined with civilian vehicles not making much progress. They don't have the build up to make a breakthrough like they did a year ago.

Why would you let them regroup when you can strengthen Ukraine to the point they make no progress and maybe even loose territory. Europe is going to regret it big time if they don't go all in now.

One suspects "all" Europe needs to do to see a Ukrainian military victory is to keep providing arms and materiel and enforce a no fly zone over Ukrainian territory.

France, Greece, Italy, Germany, Spain, the UK, Poland and Sweden all have significant air wings with Finland, Romania, Belgium, Norway and Denmark all having capable aircraft too…

Outside of America or China providing direct military support to Russia (which is wildly unlikely), I can't see how Russia wins in this scenario…

Maybe they have figured out or have been told the reality of how things really are.

Can you give more details in your posts instead of just a one liner that means nothing?

What reality do you think it is? and please provide sources with the reality you think it is.

According to Bloomberg the US has asked , as part of their questionnaire, what European peacemakers in Ukraine should do if attacked by Russia. We are getting to the difficult questions. No wonder Poland have announced that they won't be sending any in the event of a Peace deal. Meanwhile, the Uk says that they would!!! All so interesting, happening so quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,023 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

I suspect we're going to see a laborious recycling of every talking point again under the guise of "just asking questions".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,061 ✭✭✭✭briany

I have serious doubts that these talks are being held as a sincere attempt to achieve peace in Ukraine where you have a compromise both sides of the war can live with. It strikes me as more of a box-ticking exercise. A flimsy pretext to resuming normal diplomatic relations with Russia.

If Trump thinks that the Palestinian proposal is a great deal for the Palestinian people, it wouldn't at all surprise me if he were to suggest something similar for Ukraine. Take all the people from bombed-out eastern Ukraine and move them into some hastily build condos in Kazakhstan. It would be 'beautiful'.

The leaders of Europe's ~450 million population are begging the US, with a population of ~335 million, to protect it from 144 million Russians, who have been repulsed by 30 million Ukrainians for three years, — Ukrainian People's Deputy Bezugla

The EU are trying to act like it's business as usual with a wartime economy.

Anyway, give it a second thought there. Why is it everyone else seems so against peace? Could I be the one in the wrong here?

    Try it out.

Just to spare qt the bother

It seems others are saying similar, that something else is behind this and it's not peace in our time. Knowing Trump it won't be good.

They honor Bandera because he fought the Russians. Nothing wrong there. As for street names - did they start a war over street names? Tell me you are not serious.

It looks like history is starting up again.

Just saw on another thread that the meeting of the EU is proposing a 700Bn miliary aid package for Ukraine. Hopefully it's true. In your eye Putin (and Trump).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,136 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

Would be great but 700 billion!??

Can’t see where that money comes from.

The US's proposed economic 'compensation' deal with Ukraine is 'worse than the reparations imposed on Germany' - The Telegraph

It includes more than just control of the country's critical minerals - it covers everything from ports and infrastructure to oil and gas, as well as the country's larger resource base. It says:

    ▪️The US and Ukraine should form a joint investment fund to ensure that "hostile parties to the conflict do not benefit from Ukraine's reconstruction";

    ▪️The US would take 50% of Ukraine's current revenues from resource extraction, and 50% of the financial value of "all new licences issued to third parties" for future resource monetisation. There would be a "collateral charge on such revenues" in favour of the US;

▪️Zelensky "did not expect to face conditions usually imposed on aggressor states defeated in war".

“If the bill had been adopted, Trump’s demands would have amounted to a larger share of Ukraine’s GDP than the reparations imposed on Germany under the Treaty of Versailles,” the article says.

If they signed this Russia would be keeping conquered territories and the US would effectively be taking the spoils in free Ukraine. Obviously a classic Trump tactic where he starts with a crazy proposal and ends somewhere in the middle.

Would this be for prosecuting the war or part of the peacekeeping force? Guess it'll be needed either way…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭saabsaab

Where did the 160Bn already given come from? i guess the EU is ready for war now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,337 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

The US vulture has definitely landed on Ukraine/Europe with this Trump admin. Absolute scums.

It's funny though, I remember the anger on this thread about the Germans not aiding Ukraine enough early in invasion, Macron speaking to Putin etc.…it's all kind of quiet around here from those posters about all this awful snakey treacherous stuff the US is doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭saabsaab

No idea. Just a rumour no details.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭saabsaab

Early on maybe they thought they could talk Putin around. A mistake as it turned out as he can't be trusted or talked to.
