why would France, Germany or the UK start a war with Russia on our behalf, when we wouldn’t even dream of doing the same thing for them?

Use it as a naval base? Cut the undersea cables and connections, whatever suits them and it wouldn't be to run the country better - for us at least. It wouldn't be that hard to do as things are now. I could substitute UK or some more local interest sponsored from abroad equally too.

Because we're an eu member, and repurcussions of some kind of invasion would ripple through the eu economy at huge expense.

And because we're protected by art 42, common defence. And because there are other nations citizens here. And because letting one state get bumped off threatens solidarity of the whole block. And invites attempts elsewhere.

We dont dream of saving Germany because of obvious reasons, we're hilariously small in comparison.

Im sure we'd be willing to help however in any way we could, as per article 42. We've proven this with Ukraine, by taking in so many fleeing Russias war. And they're not even members.

If France or Germany, or Croatia or any other member ever do have reason for their citizens to flee we'll 100% have refuge for them too. And any other aid we can provide.

As for UK. N.Ireland is theirs (apparently) so they will defend it. If they see an approaching danger they'll counter it. I hear they're pretty good. Would you risk triggering them as a captain?

And do you think a British admiral will believe them if they say 'please to not fighting we are make only war on the ireland'.

apparently the ruskies are going to secure us as a naval base, for reasons.

theyre going to run a logistics line down from murmansk and itll totally work.

Because the island of Ireland under Russian military control is a serious threat as a staging point for an attack on France, Germany etc..

..never mind the fact that the UK is still in control of somewhere close to a quarter of the landmass!

This whole thread is an insane argument. Ignoring politics, Ireland (as an island) is too small, too open, too close to Europe geographically & too indefensible BY ANYONE to control militarily, and even if you do manage to take the place over nothing changes! It’d still be militarily impossible to control it & keep it under your control! The only valid threat is the UK because of their proximity but the bit they took with them last time they’ll gladly hand back soon enough to get it off their hands. Ireland in the world today means more politically & internationally than it did when the UK were causing problems here years ago.

Having some military manpower is handy outside a conflict too, for example when a storm knocks out the electricity from half of the country. Sure, the defense forces had a helicopter and did some delivery work, but a proper force could achieve a lot more

WE should as least have an armed Ship and at least 3 jets , probably tornadoes for ease of training and weapons . At least we can say we're trying

trump is looking for 50% of ukraine's rare minerals to defend them what would the Uk/Us demand from us if they ever truly had to bail us out militarily

Indeed they did! Finland has and had a proper defence force. We should have too.

I find this attitude embarrassing as an Irish person. It’s basiacally just expecting to leach off of other EU taxpayers. Let them do the work for us. My partner is Polish, much lower GDP/PPP per capita than us but they are investing and taking the new world order seriously

it was articulated excellently in another thread that the world order has changed now and we (the EU) have been seriously caught napping and need to make up the ground ASAP.

Since 1945 we have lived in the era of ‘Pax Americana’ (whether JFK wanted or not), whereby for the first time in history the foremost world power exercised its might with restraint and even benevolence which resulted in that power, the USA, accumulating more and more allies and ‘friends’ rather than triggering the formation of alliances and coalitions to try to balance its power (ie. The formation of the Triple Entente and Triple Alliance prior to WW1, or Pax Romana {117ad to 350ad} or Pax Britannia {1815 to 1910} being the ‘world police’ but having a nice conquered empire of subjugated peoples to enrich themselves on the backs of). That Pax Americana has ended in 2025. A vacuum will now emerge like in 1912

we need to invest and be prepared for ourselves in our own country and as members of the EU, which needs to further integrate and unify.

Tornados? By the time we get aer corp trained up they'd probably be retired from service :) Did you mean Typhoons?

I dunno, probably the Chinese use Ireland as a training ground for an invasion of Taiwan. They need some real life training! Like the unsullied, gotta blood them early on and on an easy target.

i dont know why you would come to the weird conclusion that we're leeching, but fair enough.

the end of pax americana is largely unimportant to me. and to the better part of europe, if you can escape the hype.

brussels will pour resources east, again in the case of poland. i never considered poland to be mooching when all that structural funding was boosting their country. and i dont see what we're supposed to be guilty of, especially as net contributors. sorry for being too far west.

I hope you are looking at Trumps actions and statements recently. Not a hope that US would come to our aid if Russia took over. His statement about willingness to remove US troops from frontline NATO states means he would hardly see it as important. Probably same for the EU they would issue a strongly worded statement no doubt.
