Are you saying that Niall Scannell is a better 10 than BB?

    THat could be red

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭letowski

Thankfully that’s a yellow for Daly, as if got a red and suspension, we’d have very few options on the wing.

Serious 80 minutes from Gavin "Not Dynamic Enough" Coombes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,378 ✭✭✭budhabob

Coombes handling today has been immense, offloads and long wide passes. I still don't see what he's lacking to deserve his lack of Ireland opportunities

He has been in squads and hasnt done enough clearly and there is currently two players who can play 8 who are way ahead of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 855 ✭✭✭bingobango12

Is he a better player than Doris or Conan though? Ireland management not going to pick three 8s in a squad.
He’s a good player alright, just not as good as the other 2.

He's just not as good as the lads ahead of him. It's not a conspiracy. Elite sport is fine margins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,430 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

I don't you'll find many saying that Coombes lacks the dynamism to be extremely effective in home games against the Scarlets.

Lack of a blue jersey not an issue for Prendergast, Izuchukwu, Ahern and Timoney, aka the guys ahead of him for Ireland.

Doris - no, Conan - yes. Conan is a class player no doubt, but there has to be some reflection of consistent high performance minutes as a first team player, otherwise what's the point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

Bonus point win which is what was needed. First half was sloppy, second half much better. I'd have Butler ahead of Burns all day and whilst I understand that Hodnett gives us some impact from the bench he's too good not to be on the pitch from the first minute. O'Donoghue shouldn't be starting. Jaeger and Wycherley went well up front and Coombes was immense. Munster are blessed to have him. As for the usual suspects rushing in to comment on our performance or tell us why Coombes isn't getting selected for Ireland, do us all a favour and shag off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭niallm77

Conan is a far better player then Coombes. Have you not seen his performances for Ireland in the last 2 weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭niallm77

Well then people should stop complaining about him not being picked ahead of the previous Lions test #8 and the soon to be Lions test #8 and potentially captain.

He has been in ireland camp and hasn't made an impact.

I think the management need to keep 2 out of Coombes / Hodnett / Gleeson on the field together. Probably don’t have the balance with all 3, but when they were all out the in the second half Munster we’re getting over the gainline at will. Even if it means Gleeson at 6, or Coombes in the row to finish the game, need to keep power on the field.

Munster fans in a Munster thread wondering why one of their best players and one of the most consistent in the entire country over the past few years isn't getting called up to national squads and you're getting your knickers in a twist. All you've done tonight is come into this thread and highlight poor play and moan. You do the same on Munsterfans. I don't know whether to laugh at you or light a few candles for you. It's pitiful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭niallm77

Coombes has been in national squads in the past. Hasn't done enough to get ahead of Doris (and Conan amongst others) to get picked for Ireland simply because he isn't good enough compared to those picked ahead of him at #8 in particular.

It's the same on munsterfans. It's all a conspiracy isn't it, it's all the IRFUs fault (or the D4 media) that Munster, for a long time, weren't producing players and are now crying over the current make up of the national team because another province got their **** together way back when and are producing players.

If Coombes was better then Doris/Conan he would be getting picked. He isn't, so he isn't.

As for the poor play, according to you, and many other Munster fans these players should be getting national selection yet one of your former players on national TV called the first half the worst he has ever seen. But yeah some random lad sayong the same thing on boards is the problem.

5 tries. bonus point. Resilience in the light of a poor first half. Not perfect but we must be happy overall with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

I'd agree with that. I'd have Coombes starting at 8 with Hodnett beside him and Gleeson on the bench. When Gleeson is brought on Coombes could switch to lock as he's just as effective there.

Until Nankivell is back and carrying well it’s worrying that the coaching team went with AK and Rory Scannell, neither player is giving us enough go forward in the carry, decent players I know, but that’s not their main attribute. Leaving Gleeson and especially Hodnett out of the starting lineup was a mistake I think, luckily Coombes carried more than his fair share especially in the first half or we might have been in even worse shape at halftime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

I think Kendellen starts because he's a spoiler. He turns every opposition breakdown into a mess and tackles all day. However, he's not the most explosive carrier. In that sense he's probably better as a starter than coming off the bench although I'd still have Hodnett as our best 7 and on from the first minute if it were my choice.

Rory Scannell is there out of necessity and wouldn't be starting but for injuries. A midfield of him and Burns is never going to do too much damage. He's quite good defensively but he's getting on now. Thankfully we've done some decent recruiting in that department and we have a few academy lads coming along at centre as well.

Agreed on Coombes. His carrying tonight was excellent. So too were his hands. He had a couple of lovely out the back passes after tying up two or three defenders. We'd not have had the bonus point without him this evening. We might not even have gotten the win.

League table looking a bit better

We have POM Beirne Casey Murray Nash Crowley Nanks Kleyn Loughman to come back in the side.

Josh is looking bigger and better and Evan and Gleeson don't look out of place. We are in a good place for post 6 nations.

Need to get to top 4 though.

Connacht doing us a good favour tonight. Will need a good run of form to crack the top 4. Think Bulls have a tougher schedule than Sharks, and we play them later this season at home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,595 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

with all injured players coming back after the 6 nations, no reason to think we can't win all our league games except for Glasgow away. I would be predicting a top 4 finish.

Great to get the 5 points, even better to hold them to nothing and improve our PD

Connacht beating Cardiff worked out good for us, shame Bulls didn't beat Sharks.

I thought Josh put in a great shift after such a long layoff. Coombes was Coombes. Biggest concern from tonight is another injury for Kilgallen and a HIA for Ahern

The ref was out of his depth at times.

    That's a hell of a tight table. Zebre 5 points off 9th.
