What to replace wood pellet boiler with?

    Hi all,

After 19 years of mostly reliable service I am going to replace my wood pellet boiler as is becoming more unreliable. I have been doing servicing and replaced parts such as sensors and elements to keep it going but at this stage it is time to switch. I even saw the same boiler online and bought it as my model is very rare and have scavenged parts over the years from this too 😁 .

The question is what to change too?

I was thinking the easiest way to replace it with would be oil as the boiler is in an outside garage though to future proof it a heat pump might be better. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I too practically became a wood pellet boiler technician (gerkros) due to difficulties getting properly qualified lads to maintain/service the WP boiler I installed back in 2007.

But it was eventually replaced after around 13/14 years with a condensing oil boiler. Probably the cheapest option, and works very well, is dependable & relatively economical. But no grant support, and still fossil fuel, if you happen to care about that sort of thing.

If your gaff has the required BER (B2?), and is well insulated, then a heat pump may be a good option, just has to be run properly, and there's SEAI grants available afaik once you meet their criteria. Do you have rads or UFH?

Look up heat geeks for a ton of info about how to properly install & run them.

    Thanks Pete,

My house is a high B rating ok so going to look at this route. I just spent another hour cleaning it out and replacing the heating element and Photo sensor so am hoping for something a bit easier. At this stage I am getting a bit old for it and shoveling up pellets to the auger when they get low :).

    Thanks,
