Same has happened to us a few times. Usually, Collared Doves & Starlings are to blame.

The greenfinch’s & siskin’s are more frequent visitors now too

Spotted a pair of pheasants in the back garden yesterday. The cock was mooching around the back door a couple of weeks ago but this is the first time I saw the hen, hopefully a mating pair. Photos aren't great as they were heavily zoomed. Bought a trail camera to set up so hopefully they'll be back.

I fitted one of those birdfeeders in my back garden. Got loads of birds using it. Then one day I say a rat climb up the tree, then down the string that the feeder was suspended on. My Daughter saw it a freaked out. So I had to take it down on her insistence. Even if I put a disc on the line (like they do on ships docked in harbour) then I expect that there will be some debris falling down on the grass and still attracting vermin. Was wondering if anyone else had this problem, and how did they solve it?.

I think no matter what, you'll get debris which attracts rodents. A catcher tray under the feeder would help minimise this though.
One alternative to having loads of scattered seed build up under the feeder is to frequently move it around the garden

We cannot use open feeders at all as pesky rooks swoop in and scatter the little birds every chance they get. One rook found a half closed lid , tipped the feeder and poured the contents down to his pals on the ground. We are more careful with closures since then.

The blue tits were amicable enough today

The camera feeder had more activity today as we let the other feeders empty.

    Feeder cleaning day tomorrow

The female blackcap visited the garden this morning. Not the best quality photos unfortunately.

The ongoing drama in the garden.

I placed a peanut feeder a couple of years back and then Sparrows arrived. Soon the competing and squabbling began so I mounted a second feeder. This winter Starlings & two Collar Doves appeared and I scattered feed for them.. All well and then a Robin arrived followed by its mate. Robins exhibited a curiosity, ground feeders and probing the dark recesses of the garden.
However this pair started "resource guarding" and chased the sparrows from the feeders.
So I made up a third feeder and stuffed it with Potato Farls to attract the Starlings.
Any thoughts / advice about my next move ?

    Sorry about the poor images.

I just discovered something fairly recently. We have a couple of bird feeders hung up in the back yard and we get lots of the usual birds such as sparrows, goldfinches, greenfinches, tits, etc etc. But a couple of months ago this magpie (we're not sure if theres more than one) would swoop down at speed and scatter the little birds. We thought it was sort of funny until we seen him kill a few of them. We seen at least 4 being killed over the last 2 weeks and have found clumps of feathers further out at the back and around the side of the house so it has killed more than 4.

I did read that magpies can take eggs and young chicks from other birds nests especially during the nesting season but is this normal behaviour for them at this time of year?

What type of birds are you trying to attract? Peanuts are not great, if you get sunflower hearts you will attract goldfinches, blue tits, great tits, coal tits etc.

lots of activity in the garden this morning. 2 male black caps at the feeder together, they usually chase each other off.
The female has been in the garden more often also. Time of year for it I suppose. 🤣

The redpolls have a taste for the nyger seed. Won’t by bullied off the feeder too easily either.

not a bad haul out there at the moment - at least three goldfinches, one chaffinch, lots of sparrows, a couple of blackbirds, two robins, pigeons, and blue tits, all at the same time.

sunflower hearts in the bird feeder.

We put some cotton wool into a suet ball feeder to see if the blue tits would use it for nesting material. Looks like it has been approved.

A couple of Green Finches have started to use the feeder with the camera.

The action around the nest box has quietened over the last week. Hopefully we have eggs being incubated, but we don’t know for certain and don’t want to disturb the nest box. It’s a waiting game for now.
