Ireland is well off because we are in the eu and we have managed to attract American corporations to set up here read any article about UK labour policy's they are simply raising tax's in order to pay for public services and hoping that ai or some other industry can revive the UK economy. Meanwhile company's are moving to eu countries to access the eu marketplace Brexit has been an economic disaster and they are still trying to get control of immigrants arriving in boats from france

Its not a racket American company's choose the setup here based on tax rates it's also good we speak English and had a large well educated work force and a stable economy Ireland has a good image in America we have ties there in terms of Irish emigrants and a similar culture

it’s the tax loopholes they are here for, not the actual tax rate. The same goes for Luxembourg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,434 ✭✭✭thereiver

They also need to be here to gain access to the eu market place and have a large educated workforce i.m not saying tax loopholes are not important by the way Tesla pays off only 1.5 tax rate in America .anyway the Irish economy is booming versus UK economy in an mediocre situation. UK councils have to reduce services

no they don’t. Google already employ 2000 people in Budapest and Dell employ 3000 in Bratislava. Both companies conduct job interviews in English to ensure the candidate can speak the language well. Luxembourg is home to Amazons European head office.

I helped set up a shared services centre for a global company in Budapest and the number of highly educated English speaking graduates coming out of universities there is enormous. What they don’t have is a convenient tax environment and compliant government that allows them to wash their profits before sending them off to the Caymen islands.

The major economies in Europe are struggling at the moment and Ireland is very much bucking the trend.

That depends what you class as richer?.

Possibly we feel richer here when looking at the salaries and take home pay but on the other side of the argument is infrastructure and cost of living.

If you take infrastructure for an example, we are definitely not richer.

If people pay 350k for an ordinary house that's a sign of a booming economy .yes I know there's various tax shelters that can attract companies it's not exactly a secret .the UK is not in the eu why don't they attract more American company's . I remember the Celtic tiger if you look at traffic the housing market it feels we are richer than the Celtic tiger years difference is there's not enough houses being built to keep up with demand

And the Celtic tiger came to a halt very quickly when the banks needed a bailout from the government .

Gen z had grown up with smartphones. Apps 24 .,7 internet they probably don't remember the Celtic tiger .

Getting mortgage approval does not help when there's only a tiny no of houses for sale at. Least in urban areas

If you read the UK papers about labour the economy it's not a positive situation with vague talk about growth or some bs obout being an Ai

    Superpower .

Actually in q4 2024 UK growth was slightly ahead of Eurozone growth, which did not grow at all ( 0.1% versus 0 % ).

The same UK papers which pushed Brexit? Why would any sane person trust those papers?

Some data here noting that the UK has not grown since 2008 and the poorest people are poorer than in many European countries.

However, this is data from 2021 a Covid year, and it implies that Lithuania has higher living standards (PPP adjusted) than UK, Ireland, Italy or Spain, and comparable to Denmark! This seems improbable to me, more recent EU data suggests that Lithuania has a similar standard of living to Romania, which seems more plausible.

Ireland is the fourth richest country in the world.

Our rich aren't as rich as those in the UK but our poor are doing better than their counterparts in the UK. When you see coupons in UK newspapers to save 2p on a product, you know they are in trouble.

And as you know right well, GDP isn't indicative of really anything in Ireland due to American multis domiciliing their intellectual property here.

Therefore that stat is just that - a statistic, - worse than damned lies.

This is the real story of how far that country has fallen:

Every country has an angle on something. Everyone finds a niche, it's how they survive. Do the Swiss have a racket with the banking, or the Spanish with their tourism or the Brits with their financial hub. Take away any niche from any country and it's in bother.

Sure we shouldn't rely on FDI as much as we do, but the self loathing that goes on is just nauseating.

The cost of living is far cheaper in the UK than it is in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,074 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

    Nothing to do with self-loathing.

The problem with our economy is that we are more dependent to American multinational firms than the British are to the city of London.

For McWilliams to start having a pop at the UK when we are even more exposed to external factors smacks of "green jersey" economics. Something that's ironic, considering he invented the term.

The levels of taxation here are far more punitive as well. Once you earn over €44k, the marginal rate is 48.5%. I suppose it's a great state of affairs for the Socialists in Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.

if you go by the news the UK government is just raising tax's on everything it can to balance the books or hoping a new airport can improve the economy .it turns out Brexit is a bad idea as it makes trading with the eu more expensive and they are still dealing with 1000s of immigrants arriving in boats .

Yes you can live cheaper in the UK if you live outside citys and you can buy a house cheap .

The problem we have now is we have 1000s of migrants arriving old buildings are being turned into hostels . Most of our tax revenue comes from 5 American corporations trump is taking about tariffs on European imports including Ireland .

The American economy is heading for a recession due to the tariff war and doges chaotic attack on the federal government which

has a trillion dollar budget and pays all pensions and the bill for medicare for old and retired people .The stock market has lost billions .Warren Buffet is selling most of his America shares and real estate investments as he does not trust trump or musk to act in an rational manner in regards to the economy .

Look on drudge.com lots of headlines about trump wreaking the economy falling stock market the price of gold is going up .

Every month there seems to be news of retail company's like wh smith closing shops in the UK

The UK is entirely based around the financial sector now so they're equally exposed as we are.

McWilliams criticises our economy and the way we do things nearly every podcast he does. If it was all he did, it'd get a bit tedious. He's allowed point out the flaws in the US, UK and elsewhere.

We have alot of issues, but even the most powerful economies on earth have as many issues or worse.

It is really is a waste of time posting these GDP figures. They represent production, not income and certainly not wealth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 884 ✭✭✭Big Gerry

It's daylight robbery yet we keep being told that Ireland is a "rich country".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Mr. teddywinkles

Always said people do better during a recession if they can keep their jobs and no wage drop. More buying power.

During a boom business's just increase prices constantly because they think people have loads of disposable income. Make hay while the sun shines. And it seems to be very predominant in this little Isle

UK has National Insurance that's higher than PRSI, council tax on every adult, and water charges. Total tax/cost burden is similar or higher for most

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,074 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

This is not the case. Our tax rate is higher and kicks in at far lower thresholds than the UK. At least the British gets something for their money (free healthcare). If you're a working person in this country paying taxes, you get nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,823 ✭✭✭✭L1011

You are ignoring the actual content of my post to repeat your statement. The UK total tax/cost load is similar to here as council tax applies to every household and is many times higher than LPT, and water charges alone are often two to three times LPT.

Headline tax rates do not reflect total tax burden, and it is deliberately deceitful to pretend they do.

The NHS is in ribbons and is near impossible to access, so that is not a benefit. GP appointments take days of calling at 8am to schedule, dentistry services don't exist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,419 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

Other than paying for GPs, healthcare is free also and better funded than in the UK. There is a reason that people live 2 years longer in Monaghan than Tyrone.

    dentistry services don't exist

There's no point in even debating with someone who can pull an outrageous lie like this out of their ass.
